Bon Iver was amazing yes, but there’s something so hauntingly beautiful about Taylor’s vocals, I will always love, and this song needed that to balance off him. They both carried it equally.
They did a near perfect job collabing. As a swiftie, I can't even say that either one of them carried Exile. The song couldn't exist without them both. A true performance. Both of them made it so good.
I am watching this in August 2024. Taylor has mashed this song several times on the Eras tour. The audience does the respond to her call and it is so special.
Comparison is the thief of joy. Both Taylor and Justin sound incredible, their writing is fantastic, they really compliment each other. Neither of them carry the performance. It’s a perfect duet. Now, Taylor did sing this on piano alone at the eras tour one night and it was So so so good. There’s also a live performance of Taylor and Justin singing it together. There’s no need to diminish either of them to prop up the other. Just enjoy the song for what it is.
I completely agree! I think that neither one did better I’m just glad that we got the collab! Ahhh I wish I would’ve heard her sing this live! Thanks for watching!!:))
The long pond sessions are just one of the most unique things I've seen the whole album is amazing but it's a whole different feeling listening to this performance.
What blew my mind was finding out the meanings behind songs I wasn't really enjoying as much (specifically Mirrorball and Epiphany), because it completely utterly changed the way I felt about them, especially Epiphany. I wish she would do this for every single song, my gosh.
The combination of these two voices is so sweet and passionate makes me cry every time I hear Exile. "So I'm leaving out the side door" -- gut punch. Noticing the good lines -- you're showing great signs of becoming a Swiftie! I hope you keep going down the Long Pond sessions road. Maybe with My Tears Ricochet.
Wow such a great breakdown! I agree, all those aspects are what make this song so powerful! I’ve had a lot of requests for my tears ricochet I think I’ll have to give it a listen soon!
My Tears is almost the opposite of the grief embedded in this song. In the LPS version, Taylor puts the most restrained, delicate fury into it. And we know where fury goes ... frieg. She really is a #mastermind. Thanks for the great reaction @@kaden_dayton
I think their voices mend so well together. I love Taylor's lower register. This song always gives me chills! You should do Cornelia Street live from Paris definitely!
Justin Vernon of Bon Iver is a revelation in this song. The bass, the rich texture of his voice is magnificent. I think your assessment of how their voices compliment each other is insightful. The whole song is magnificent.
My fav song off Folklore and it introduced me to the unique voice of Justin Vernon. I’m enjoying getting to discover Bon Iver. Taylor is the gift that keeps on giving! A sonically & lyrically perfect album. Playing it on repeat helped me enormously during a very stressful time.
Bon Iver carried is such a weird and likely biased response to this. The song is beautiful only because of the contrast of their voices, along with how what they are saying contrasts each other. I’m a dedicated swiftie but this is one of those songs where the performance only works because they are complimenting each other. Take either of them away and the song is nothing. So neither of them can carry. It’s all about how they are coming together, which has a lovely irony since it’s a song about two people who came apart.
Taylor Swift's voice of course. If you had to go on a long trip, and you would only be able to take one artist's discography, who would you take? For me, Taylor Swift all day long, 10 albums of all different genres. I am a 64-year-old, who has loved her since her very first album.
Oh my goodness! I can't pick who I like more on this song. It wouldn't be as magical without both of them. I have probably listened to this hundreds of times and it still gives me chills and brings tears to my eyes.
This is a duet in the fullest meaning of this word possible - you cannot choose one or the other, they are two halves of a whole here... And I agree, Tay outdid herself with writing on this one
❤ good video, you’ll notice that Taylor tends to willingly take back stage when she collaborates with others. She collaborates with performers for a reason! She likes their voice and she doesn’t wanna overshadow it.
yesss omg this performance gives me chills everyyyy time😩🩶 edit: I love bon iver’s voice !! Esp in this song; it is sooo hard trying to sing his part 😂😂
Justin’s voice is phenomenal but I’m sticking with my girl here bc what makes this such an amazing song is both of them together. Taylor knew she wanted him on this track bc of his low voice and they just made magic together with this one!
This one is much better, IMO, than the original studio version, mostly because they seemed to have produced the previous one to have a lot of extra echoing stuff that detracts from the power of the vocals and the emotions they're conveying. I recommend any of the Long Pond, but I also think it would be interesting if you listened to the 1989 performance of Out of the Woods live, then contrasted it with the Grammy Museum version of the same song. The vibes are completely different, both live, the latter much more intimate. The EAS channel has both in high def!
His name is Justin Vernon. His band is Bon Iver. Taylor wrote the song (lyrics & music) during COVID lockdown, sent the recording to Justin & he sent it back w/his vocals added, along with the bridge, which he wrote & added. They both make it work. I don't think the song would fly as a solo.
Why do I have to like one "better"? The entire point is two voices in gorgeous counterpoint. It's not a competition and there's no prize, except for the listener.
No, neither of them carried the performance. That's part of why their vocals sound so good together; it doesn't sound like one is outdoing the other. They complement each other rather than competing.
Taylor and her then boyfriend wrote this. She sang both parts(Joe isn't a singer) then sent it to Aaron Dessner. She asked Aaron if Justin could sing the guys part. The Long Pong Sessions, Folklore and Evermore were made during Covid. Aaron, his wife, Jack Antinoff and Taylor stayed at Aarons compound in Upstate New York to record The Long Pond Sessions. Justin is in his studio. Taylor sent Aaron a text out of the blue at the start of Covid. They made the Folklore and Evermore albums not ever being together. Taylor was a fan and had met The National years before at an awards show. That was the only time they had spoke.
Perhaps the most important thing to know at this point is that her music ranges over several styles and genres. Here is another song from the Long Pond that you need to hear: ruclips.net/video/o5SQIECedTY/видео.html My Tears Ricochet (Long Pond Sessions) (BTW: be sure to listen to the very last second of the video. The sigh at the end is iconic. Lots of reactors cut too soon or don't notice it.) For something completely different, this one is essential to swiftie culture. (It is also fantastic in the Eras Tour movie, but I don't know how to give you a clip for that.) The entire "Reputation Stadium Tour" movie is fantastic. I find it amazing that they were not in the same location when they did this song. Just amazing - their voice blend so well and are in sync with each other. ❤
@ - it’s really amazing how it shows how to people can see what happens in a relationship differently - her writing is amazing-she collaborates amazingly with whomever she works with-she seems so generous with her talent and personality
Their voices are so great together! I’d love to see another colab with the two of them! I love their voices equally! They are both so different but this song is a great mesh together!❤
You should see her live performance of exile on the eras tour. The emotion she brings to her performances is truly something that sets her apart from a lot of modern artists.
Agreed lyrically a perfect song. It feels like an unspoken conversation between two former lovers passing each other in the street. By far one of my all time favorite songs! Vocally they sound like velvet and silk. So perfect, sexy and haunting. 🫶
So Justin singing more agressively and Taylor lighter on this song is on purpose, it shows the dynamic of the two people in that relationship. Taylor has said that this is two ex lovers meeting when she is out with her new lover, and her ex is angry, jelous and questioning why it is over and she is saying I gave you so many signs and chances, and as the song progresses they start to talk over eachother and almost screaming by the end.
This is actually Justin Vernon of the group Bon Iver. He usually sings in an odd sort of falsetto, and I don't know why when he can do this. I have no understanding of all the technical things you said but I know I love this song and love both their voices and how well they sound together. These two are a perfect vocal match and I hope they do more collabs together, especially emotional songs like Exile.
