Really nice setup and very educative. I am starting with a similar setup but with different brands and it is worth watching what you have done so I learn how to do things right, even my current equipment looks like the right setup to start with.
The Eq section of the channel strip is actually a Hi, Sweep-able mid, and low. The black knob allows you to select the frequencies you want to adjust by increasing or lowering dB by using the mid blue knob.
Good work you've done there, just something I wanna point out. By the way amazing board. We did 2 years radio with this board 2012-14. You can get your mac's output digitally into the mixing board just by using the board's usb in/out directly to your mac (From what I remember its fader [ch] 7/8). The mac will see it as an external sound card. So there you have it, one less audio connection. Plus you can use your mac existing on board soundcard for monitoring audio [PFL] (without been recorded).
Sorry mate but you got Dynamic and Condenser microphones all wrong. Dynamic and Condenser refers to how diaphragm of the mic picks up the sound. A dynamic mic doesn't need anything other than acoustical energy (the sound it picks up) to work and send signal, where a condenser needs 48V from an outside source which is called "Phantom Power" from your mixer. What you were referring to is called Pickup Pattern, or Polar Pattern of the mic, which is illustrated by the picture right next to where it says Dynamic (clear shot @2:03). The SM7B and the SM58 have a cardioid pickup pattern which means it picks up most from the front, a little from the sides and rejects everything from behind (creating a heart shaped pattern, or Cardioid). As a sound guy, I thought you did a really good job of explaining things and your thought process, and I hope that this clears it up for you and you viewers/listeners
I think he is right about what he was talking about the mics, He only omit the technical expiation. Dynamic mics are less sensitives to noise compare to condenser mics, this has nothing to do with pickup patterns, both dynamics and condensers mics are design with different pick up pattern. " Dynamics mics and Condenser mics have totally different designs internally. ......What he was saying is that you can still get away with background noise using Dynamic mic compare to using Condenser mics which are very Sensitive to pick ever little thing around....
Interesting thing is that yourZOOM H5 by itself could probably do a lot of things your mixer and the compressor does. It has in fact 4 inputs, inlcuding 2 XLR inputs. So you could record your mic to input L/R, skype to input 1 and phone to input 2. Even more so, you can split L/R input into 2 separate inputs and get your mic as input L and sound effects from mac into R. It also has a compressor functionality, it can provide phantom power or plugin-power to mics....
A block diagram will be really helpful. I'm getting lost at the compressor and the mixer hook up, also how you are breaking out you sound to separate tracks into the ZOOM
Really nice Simple & Effective method of getting quality sound at an affordable rate, and awesome walk through explaination of his setup too..[ thats why i subscribed ]..thumbs up DBT !!..]
Well done and very informative, especially the attention to the Cloudlifter microphone activator. Guessing that the Behringer Multicom Pro Audio Compressor/Limiter is connected to the A&H ZED 14 mixer as an insert. Very organized and well thought out studio layout. Thank you for your time and effort producing and sharing this video. Cheers!
This mixer doesn't have a low mid & high mid option. There is only a mid knob the other knob is for selecting the mid frequency you want. I just wanted to mention.
I have a ZED 10 and the mids are sweepable. The blue knob selects the frequency and the black knob adjusts the level of the selected frequency. I believe its the same on the ZED14. Minor detail. I enjoyed the video. Thanks.
Very helpful. What I'd also like to see is a video focused on your mixer WHILE you are doing a podcast. I'd like to see how you use the controls while you are producing/streaming.
I have RODE NT1-A with Alesis Multimix8USBFX mixer which sounds great, I do have another mixer on the way if it gets delivered. I connect the mixer to my computer via usb as it's a usb mixer I could use the RCA outputs to connect to my lil handheld voice recorder as backup audio receiver. The voice recorder I have is the Olympus LS-100 which sounds and does great as I can record in WAV or MP3 which I record in WAV for best quality audio over MP3.
The most straightforward and helpful video I've watched yet. Thanks so much. Thinking about having a podcast studio and music production studio and I'm watching videos to see how to just put everything into one mixer. Any tips?
The way you describe the EQ on your mixer (low mid, high mid) is a common misconception. Those two knobs are not two separate mid range EQ's. It is one mid-sweep EQ with one knob setting the frequency and the other knob adjusting the amount of boost or cut on the frequency. But I like your video, good job, thanks.
I used to work at a prominent sports radio station and part of my job was to program carts into the daily schedule - The old fashioned way. literal cartridges.
Hello Ben, helpful video; thanks for sharing. Question: I'm a beginner podcaster & want to use a "mixer with my digital recorder. The XLR going into your recorder is labeled "Mic". Is that the cable from the "Main Out" on your mixer since everything is running through the mixer? Thanks.
Does anyone know of any distributors who upload your podcast to all major platforms the same way onerpm and cd baby do for music. A one stop shop that shows you statistics. Second question. Do ppl make money from a certain amount of streams just like music?
Great setup. My only issue is the Cloudlifter. I'm familiar with the SM7b and with Allen & Heath mixers. Does the A&H really not have enough preamp gain for the SM7b? That surprises me.
5:27 it's not "low mid and high mid". What you have is a sweepable mid band. One knob is the boost / attenuation, the other knob changes the centre frequency of the band.
can you list all the items you use, with links? Not being lazy. I want to make sure I pick up the right items. Thanks for the info. btw, what camera are you using?
Great video. I have a question about going from a standard telephone into my zoom (directly, using a similar adapter). I get an awful buzzing sound on the recording, an electrical buzzing, fairly low (baritone maybe, not bass). Any experience with that, or ideas? It can change a bit, depending on where the Zoom is.
If you don't plan on going live and introducing guests, then all you really need is a decent microphone with a stand, an audio recorder and some basic audio editing software. It's important that your audio recorder is capable of providing phantom power for the microphone. Otherwise you will need some other form of phantom power. If you want to get really simple then just get a decent microphone that can attack to your smartphone.
Nicely done. BUT... you severely glossed over the Skype interface. We could really use a clear photo of the "interface" you mention, an explanation of how it works, and a name we can search so we can order it. That's all. Appreciate the knowledge. But you can never be too specific.
I wouldn’t really take any of this video seriously, the guy doesn’t know what a dynamic mic is and is recording a podcast with an sm7b (notorious for a high noise floor) in a room full of bare walls and glass.

That's not the only thing that he got wrong. Should we start a comprehensive list?

Nice office view and natural lighting
Thanks Chris!
DBT Podcast with Ben Fewtrell no informational links for purchases. Hmmm.
I ended up getting this entire setup.. it's studio quality..

Top man for making this video great setup
You explained this really well, thanks!

Whats the program called what you use for the sound and music on your computer?
I get you video now my bro thanks for good loyalty
I wish you did a block diagram of your components and cabling.
Following your hand around with a camera stopped me

Since you're using a Mac, why not use QLab? You can create cue carts that are much easier to program.
$600-$700 not expensive ?
Aussie Dollars
It’s really not mine cost $1500 australian

Wow. Thank you. Very Helpful.
Love this! Thank you for sharing man!
great job. but can you help me
with a name of good software for that.....
Hello and thank you is the "soundbyte" program free and where can i find it thank you again for a great video...
Thanks for the good tips!
So, you're taking everything and recording into one track on the Zoom H5? Maybe it's a stereo track?
Hey Ben, plz disregard my question regarding the mixer to recorder...I see you already answered that question detail. Thx.
What is BETTER than a 58 is a 57 with a better fitting foam. Foam doesn't fit on the 58 nicely at all.
👁👁 How do you compare A&H ZED 14 to Soundcraft Signature 12 MKT? Thank you.
What camera are you using? Great Podcast!!!
hey ben the telephone recording adaptor what kind of cords I need to hook it up using the mixer broad
Quick Question.. Do you have your microphones going straight to the compresor/limiter? and then they are routed over to the mixer?
how the output compression?
Do you have a list of all the equipment you use?
So what is the deal with the two monitors ? Are you using two different computers ?
Hey Ben, do you have any views on the new Rodecaster Pro?
How do you use the behringer ha-400?
Really helpful information. Appreciate it.
Can you use any type of recorder?
How do you get you podcast out to public.
"that cable" is a XLR cable.. 3:26...
Shit. I'm just looking for something super simple. Instead my search gets me dudes with sound-mix tables... shit.
Same here lol

That's not what dynamic means. And most broadcasters use dynamic mics.

the filming is really terrible ..
