I was born in Islington in 1954, and lived in Highbury (Park/Grange) until 1966. The Beatles , Stones and other big names - like Sinatra - performed just around the corner (Finsbury Park Astoria) and Cassius Clay / Muhamad Ali fought Henry Cooper at the old Gunners (Arsenal) stadium. I still miss Covent Street Market and the Manzies pie 'n mash shop ! Real London food. Glad you're enjoying the place. BTW that fish you ate was probably cod, otherwise haddock.
Good job Rebecca, I love your video so much. I am from Singapore, but I live in Islington at my friend's every time I come visit London. You made me miss Islington so much. Barnsbury Square in your video where I walked my friend's dog, shopping/walking along Upper Street, Camden Passage, all the cool places. I definitely want to go back when we can travel again! You solve my home sick (Islington) a bit for now by watching your video! This is lovely.
Another comment from someone who grew up in these ends 👌. I grew up in Highbury during the 90s, closer to Arsenal. Me and my family always lived along the blue lines. Our old house is worth over a million now, but wasn't when we living there We're working class so the delicatessens were not for us, we used to shop at Safeway. We'd occasionally get to go McDonalds for, like, a birthday or something
I just started following u.....I really love ur channel, specially the way u explain n ur voice is so sweet. Don't stop posting u I'll go a long way. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
great video guys. It brings back fond memories of living on avenell road and going to Gillespie primary and Highbury grove school in the late 70's early 80s. greetings from Barbados
This makes me so sad, I'm born and bred in this borough and so was my father and his father before him and so on, we go way back hundred of years in the area, Gentrification has ruined my home, working class families like mine are being forced out to make way for the middle class and hipsters like the women in this video wanting to move in, this area was prodomontly working class area, our Pubs, cafes and businesses have all gone to make way for trendy cafés, restaurants and gastro pubs. Islington has lost its soul, our history and our culture being iradicted and not even our local 'LABOUR' MP's have stepped in. Holloway, Archway and Caledonian road are the last standing but it's slowly creeping there too, it's not just my borough but the whole of London, you may move here but your heart will never love this place as much as ours does for we built this place for you people to take it from us, Long Live The Working a classes of Islington
That's a sad story. My parents are Irish but we moved to the area from South London via a Council home swap. I'm glad I got to meet people like yourself growing up there in the 90s (there were still plenty cockneys about in those days). I live in Ireland now but I still have the exact same accent as Johnny Rotten, despite growing up in Highbury about 30 years later than he Had my first proper blue collar job in Holloway. By the time I graduated we had moved to Wood Green, but I actually ended up having my first white collar job on the Holloway road too. Altogether I had 3 jobs there (I'll reveal one ; working in Safeway lol. Served a couple of EastEnders actors in there). I hope Holloway road never changes!
