  • Indian Ringneck Parakeets are incredibly popular pet birds because of their fun and cute personality and all the color mutations they come in. Throughout time they were even regarded as sacred animals due to their ability to talk, but the question is, is this the right pet parrot for you?

      I had bought one from a previous owner. The bird was a nightmare, unfortunately. After 8 months of training/ taming my ringneck we only got to the point where she would step up and then immediately step off (I am not a beginner and have 4 parrots). I highly recommend getting this bird as a baby and like mentioned in the video, work through the bluffing stage on your own. Although the bird was extremely difficult to tame, she wasn't aggressive. She was quite the opposite; extremely skiddish. HATED little kids and would start yelling and screeching any time a child entered the same room as it. Please do not buy a ringneck off of somebody if your not an expert. You will not enjoy the experience, and the bird will also likely not be in the best care it deserves. I know it can be very tempting, especially when they drop the prices really low for them (You could probably guess why they would do that) but please know what you are getting into.

      Mine knows that my laptop, phone, tablet, etc.. are off limits to him, but since he watches me use these things, he wants his turn too. So he waits until I'm not in the room or somewhere else in the house and then he sneaks into my room and chews up the tablet or phone case especially the soft rubber parts, removes keyboard keys on my laptop, etc.. When I discover him on the device and confront him, he'll either run away or when he's feeling courageous he'll square up with both his feet on the device in question and then lunge at me when I get closer.

    Ringnecks compete with licensed opium farmers for 'harvest', as they seem to know the perfect time to chomp the pods off of the plant, and to make their get-away with an extra length of the straw (as the straw contains opium, too). They then fly off to their respective trees, get "bombed", pass out, and fall to the ground...

But then I found one close by and it was only 4 weeks old when I got him. We are in the bluffing stage right now. It's truly rough. I get bit constantly but it's worth it in the long run. 🖤

    • @moontoonex3984

      How has the progress been?
      I'm interested in hearing more first-hand accounts about this breed. I SEE so many lovely and sweet and cuddly IRNs in vids and read so many stories that match that, yet every "bird reviewer" I've seen says those are the exceptions and that they're not cuddly/ wont let you even touch their heads.
      One woman in a vid where she get's bitten by an Amazon Parrot made a good point in saying that the more birds you have, the less tamed they will be/ less bonded they will be to you and the more they will just focus on the other birds in their flock.
      Makes sense that someone with 5+ birds won't have the time to bond closely to each one, and if this one needs a lot of attention they simply will bond with the other birds over the human.

    Absolutely love your informative videos! Look forward to more! I own IRNs and I belive they can be really affectionate and cheeky pets, if they have been properly handfed and socialised. So a lot depends on the breeder. Also, we need to interact with them on a regular basis to sustain the attachment. My IRNs do not scream; they are closely bonded with other medium sized parrots and lead quite interesting fun-filled lives.

    • @stockvettes5112
      @stockvettes5112 7 месяцев назад

      Is the “screaming” bad? Or a sign of unhappiness?

    • @gandhariroy1743
      @gandhariroy1743 4 месяца назад

      The screaming can be quite bad, harsh and piercing. However, not as bad as Aratinga conures. One of my ring necks is a great talker. In my experience, ringnecks that talk generally do not scream to vent their annoyance or grab your attention. They prefer to “talk”. So a talking ring neck is definitely not a screamer. A happy and contented ringneck living with other parakeets or parrots in your home is also not a screamer. Hope this helps!

    Highly recommend Omar's, I had a Caique for several years, loved the bird, her name was Fruitloop! She was crazy funny! Unfortunately because of work requirements I could not keep her, after 6 years of ownership Omar's bought her back, obviously for a reduced price but that was ok because I know she would be treated very well. I am now retired and looking for a bird. Considering a Ringneck. Thanks for the informative video. Another reason I would recommend Omar's is the high quality of their birds and they boarder birds if you go on vacation or any other reason, great shop.

Already gives kisses and im training him to talk. This bird is very misunderstood especially when it comes to the bluffing stage. Another good thing to train your IRN is taking a bath, this will cut down on the dust they give off. If you want an IRN, do your research first, get a handfed baby. They are easier to deal with and train. Thank you for all your information!

    This is REALLY helpful! I really want a Pionus… I’ve had Budgies and a Cockatiel in the past so I’m not 💯 new but I had them when I was younger so it’s still going to be a relatively new experience getting a new bird as an adult. I’m wanting a Pionus because I think the size is about perfect and all my research (including your videos) has said they’re relatively laid back and quiet for a parrot. I went into an exotic bird shop and they tried selling me on a Ring Neck instead saying they were comparable in temperament… Don’t get me wrong, I’m not gonna hate on Ring Necks based on this video or anything else but I know what I’m looking for in a parrot for my life style and this doesn’t sound like it.

    I have an IRN who is 16 and I got her when she was a baby. So glad you emphasised the bluffing stage. It is really a highly testing time but once you are through the other end, it is so rewarding. I have the sweetest, funniest, cuddly girl. Apparently even the avian vet says they have not met an IRN Like mine being super sweet, super chill and cuddly. Cuddles is all she wants, they want to be with you allllll the time doing what you do, I can do anything with her, lie on her back for tummy scratches but apparently it’s not normal for this breed. Loves to play games, fetch, hide and seek, just being curious and exploring.
    One thing to point out is how strongly they imprint on you. It’s important to keep them well socialised for their mental health. It’s something I actively do as my worry is how she will do if something happens to me, I want her to be ok since she sees me as her life partner.

    Yes, yes, yes! Finally!
    We live in an apartment with an Indian Ringneck but our apartment is made of brick. Our neighbors didn't even know we had a parrot.
    I wanna add... Most Indian Ringnecks don't even like petting. I've met very few. I wish they did, but they're very hands off. I can get mine to accept petting but he doesn't enjoy it.
    Also, I haven't noticed the dust at all. Do they not have a preening gland?
    Edit: My Indian Ringneck asked me to pet him for the first time! I've had him for 8 months and he's always been against it so this is a huge milestone.

    I consider myself skilled with birds and damn, the bluffing phase was hecking difficult even with all preparations. The birb turns into complete spawn of Satan suddenly, biting, screaming, destroying stuff, all that jazz. I've used trick which could be called "no fear" - not even flinching when Sammy bit me, sometimes even offering my hand to get bitten more, showing her I'm not gonna get bullied easily. She always lost interest after few bites, but my hands looked like I was dealing with eagle and not a parakeet :D took few months of heavenly patience with her, but now she's happy and calm birb

    What do you do with a ringneck male who isn’t tame? My father supposedly obtained a female ringneck from a friend sometime before 2015 which I named SweetPea. Several months later, she developed a black ring around her neck and bow tie. Suddenly, my dad’s feathered girl was a male! Regardless, he was supposed to be his pet but my mother & I spent time singing & teaching him to speak. The problem was, my father and I were unable to handle him though he was allegedly hand reared. He would chew my dad’s fingers but could not be caught. SweetPea seemed to bond with my dad but would only communicate with my mom. He learned a variety of phrases, mimicking my voice, and screeched at earshattering decibels if not given attention. I had several cats at the time and all of them were terrified and left him alone. In 2015, my mom passed of lung cancer and the morning she died, Pea stopped talking and hasn’t uttered a word since. 😢 My dad mostly ignored Pea following that time and I now care for him. I feed, water, provide toys, change his paper, sing, & talk to him but he any time I get close to the bars of his birdhouse he bites the hellations out of my fingers drawing blood. For several years now he’s been “dancing” at me for which I initially didn’t realize the meaning. He’s at least 7 years old and still bluffing! I’ve tried earning his trust by feeding him his pellets through the cage bars or sharing my food with him-to no avail. I can’t stick my hand in the birdhouse to pet or clean or repair his toys without losing a pint of blood. Idk what to do. I have a dog, 2 cats, & a turtle besides. I give him as much attention as I’m able though it never seems enough. How do I establish a relationship with him? He’s the most cantankerous creature I’ve ever known yet I love him and want him to be happy. Any advice?

    It's tough to work on him but I notice every day or week he seems to be a bit more relaxed.
    Today he was singing for about 10 min. Also I think he's getting the hint that thee perch stick I use to train is not going to harm him.
    I have faith that in a month or so. He might get used to me and allow me to get clos. Using the stick. I have gotten him to stand on my shoulders. But he's really scared it doesn't really move.
