I usually don't leave replies to things but I have been watching your channel for a while and Lorde's team is one of my favorite Lord songs. She is one of the few artists, in my opinion, that can rival the lyrical beauty of twenty one pilots, one of my other favorite bands. So here's my take on Team:
It's about finding a sense of belonging when you feel like an outsider. She starts the song off within her "queen bee" persona. When she repeats the line "send the call out" she is accepting the obligation that she feels toward her fans to use her songs to help and inspire. (Kind of like when Tyler screams "please just send them all my way" in A Car, A Torch, A Death)
Verse 1 is where I feel she is identifying her target audience, I think she makes this verse deliberately vauge to allow for a broad range of people to feel identified by this song, but I think she puts an emphasis on the idea of the lost and misguided youth; a generation that has not yet found it's place within society and feels disavowed.
I think the chorus is another shout out to the lost youth, who feel invisible to the rest of society: "We live in cities that you'll never see on screen" and calling on them to find a sense of belonging, not by looking to the rest of society for it, but to their friends and peers that understand them and love them for who they are "And you know were on each others team" (This line is also a nostalgic callback to the times when we were all kids and would argue over "teams" which in retrospect, we know to be us just looking for a sense of belonging)
The line "were all competing for a love we won't receive" could be about relationships but on a deeper level, it could be about finding acceptance within your community and learning how to accept others for who they are.
I could write alot more on my interpretation of this song but that's all I have time for now, I hope some of what I said resonated with you. (:

      Nice perspective.
I struggle to give a defined meaning to this song.
I feel the video is saying something true, your comment as well, but yet I feel we are lacking something. Eg, I have the impression there's also a somehow nostalgic sense toward that age (teens).

Awesome job on interpreting and deducing it ✌️ I'd like to know your thoughts on team's music video. I felt it more like a cult of a thing in the video..

love how Lorde is vividly aware and empathetic to the disparaging inequality between life as we see on screens and life as it happens for marginalized people. But I love her more for rallying us to not dream of those luxurious things rubbed on our faces. Lorde teaches us to contemplate the real purpose of life which is to find meaning on your own (not happiness as other people define it) and celebrate, not be ashamed of, one's roots.
Lorde is very reflexive; I always think of "Society of the Spectacle" by G. DeBord which she posted on Instagram. She deconstructs the pervasive idea of fame as glory and provides a voice especially for the marginalized (Pure Heroine) and the lost in adulthood (Melodrama).

P.S. Melodrama to me is also about vulnerability. And you gotta appreciate the growth in her song writing. In Pure Heroine, she critiqued society for its fakery while in Melodrama, she proceeds to critique the critiquer, showing her momentary descent and break down, which she inspiring ends with a sober (no pun intended) song about self-love and moving on, this time with tamed expectations (Liability (Reprise) and Perfect Places).

A lot of people won’t see this, but I personally have a sentimental attachment to this song, so I though I would attempt to interpret it from how I personally see it.
In the beginning, we see boys around Europe and France who sit there unhappily, feeling left out. The video shows they isolate themselves. Then we see them being abducted, like, they have been taken away, to this place, like an island, where Lorde and her crew are. When they get there, they first think it’s bad, and they are in danger, but then at the same time, it’s better than how everyone lives normally. So they compete in jousting competitions against each other to see if they can join the team. One of the boys falls, and Lorde and the rest of the group come to pick him up and help him. They all still joined, though. As Lorde said, “sometimes the person who loses is stronger.”, and he lost the joust. That is when he realised they are on each other’s team.
    Lyric interpretations-
That’s how you know we’re on each other’s teams: she shows that he is lonely no more and they are there for him no matter what.
I’m kinda over getting told to throw my hands up in the air, so there: Lorde explains that she is tired of people forcing her to be someone she isn’t- basic, normal, or happy sometimes too. It’s okay to not be okay!
We live in cities, you’ll never see on screens; not very pretty but we sure know how to run things: society would never tell other people about them, as they ran things better than the government- everyone was happy, included and had found a home with people similar to them: different to the rest.
I think this comes to show that sometimes when something happens, you may think it’s bad, or negatively impacting your life, but it’s probably very important. Moving, for example, leaving your friends, and everyone you have ever known- starting afresh. You might just be happier there than you were before. Sometimes, it takes a difference, or a change in life to realise who and what is really important.
Quarantine showed me who my real friends actually are- not the ones who want me for helping them with math- the one who know when I’m upset, or something’s wrong. I am so tired of waiting for life to pass me by! I am so tired of helping people when they can’t return the favour! Someone I helped though bullying for nearly 3-4 years told me I was exaggerating, being dramatic and it’s not her problem, when I explained how I was currently feeling.
If you are reading this, you should also stop trying impress to everyone. The only person you should impress is yourself. When I moved at the age of 2, I was bullied into being normal by people in my city and school. My ‘normal’ is bike rides, vintage clothes, aesthetic vibes, deep conversations, goofyness, and late night beach walks, walks in parks and gardens, watching the sunrise, and late night drives. I let myself be changed ENTIRELY by people who wear makeup, use their phones and scream at their parents. Don’t make the same mistake. There are always people who care for you. You are loved, and you are appreciated, so never forget that! So, be who you truly want to be! And ily sm, okay?! 💕💕✨✨💖💖 bye!

Wow, I love your interpretation of Team!!! Lorde's such a though-provoking songwriter. I never considered that moon and jewels of "Team" related to such specific qualities of adolescence. It would interesting to see your interpretation of Lorde's "A World Alone" because I haven't heard many people talk about that song. compared to her other ones.

"We're on each other's team" is such a nice line of the song she's simply telling everyone who feels like an outcast or an outsider from the typical representation of "beauty /popularity" of our society, that they're not alone in this,That they are seen and heard. Anyways this is really my favourite song of her along with royals and yellow flicker beat :)

  • @Betta66
    @Betta66 5 лет назад +15

Also worth pointing out is that Lorde sings about teeth quite frequently on the album: 400 Lux, Royals, Team. Heck, there's a song called White Teeth Teens. My thought was that obsessing over clean teeth derives from a broader, more general obsession over maintaining appearances, something that Lorde (who was 16 when she got famous) would know very well.

she revealed that she uses teeth as a symbol of aging, which is also a theme very prevalent throughout pure heroine, like in ribs, a world alone, the love club etc...
