  • Lorde's album Melodrama comes out next week, but this week we get one more single--"Sober." "Sober" sounds like it's just about not being drunk anymore, but there are actually some deep thoughts in here. She sings about a relationship she'd like to end and some deep questions she'd rather not answer. But in the end, she feels stuck partying and drinking as an escape, and Lorde doesn't deal with those thoughts and feelings.
    Let me know what you think about "Sober" by Lorde!

    also a little reference noticed -- in team she says "dancing around all the lies we tell" then in sober "its time we danced with the truth"

    I love Lorde's music so much. Maybe because we're about the same age i can relate to every single song she writes...but you can tell she's an old soul and a true artist. Can't wait for MELODRAMA :)

      I like the idea of her being an "old soul." That makes a lot of sense and describes her perfectly.

    Interesting you would compare Melodrama to The Great Gatsby, since the first song on the album is called “Green Light” which reminds me of the the green pier light, the most famous symbol in the novel.

    I think this song is about 2 people who were together but broke up because he left her for someone else, are hooking up again on the weekend, possibly b/c this new person he left her for is gone or out of time. She’s out of breathe b/c she’s terrified of getting caught, sleeping around with her ex, but it’s also exhilarating to her (revenge on the other room, feelings for him); they act nonchalant to hide what they are doing. She knows it’s just a phase, they are over, but she can’t stay away and admit the truth. She still has feelings for him...my hips have missed your hips...come and sway with me, go astray with me. She’s going to get hurt here, but in the moment, she doesn’t care. King and queen of the weekend...means while this person is away, it’s you and me together...like a back door lover...ain’t a pill that could touch our rush...this means nothing, in this moment, is going to make me feel as good as being with you...but what will we do when we sober up? Means what’s going to happen when they come to their senses, he goes back to her and she is left alone...you can interpret the whole song this way...the ruse means can we pretend we’re not doing this so no one catches us? She’s dancing on her own at one point b/c for her, this affair is brought on b/c she still feels something for him; but for him, it means nothing. He’s moved on. Hence they have to deal with the fantasy (her’s, being back with him) and the believing (that, in the moment, it might happen) vs. the realty (we know that it’s over). She even mentions something about cheating. This theme is explored in other songs on Melodrama...Greenlight, a possible Gatsby reference, she thinks you love the beach you’re such a damn liar ( you weren’t at the beach, you were kicking it with me) and I know about what you did and I want to scream the truth;

    If you're thinking of explaining Lorde songs, I think "Team", her second biggest single, is probably a good choice, because to this day I find it confusing!

    Perhaps the deepest sentence I've heard on RUclips. "The answers are out there. It's harder to accept them than it is to find them." Also I love Lorde's new album and how she relates from her personal perspective what this crazy time period of woman-child, emerging adulthood life is like. Her vocals, her lyrics, her meaning, her relatability, all of it - make her a brilliant artist that inspires me to keep writing (especially since we're about the same age :D).

    Hey Cliff! Great video as always. I was wondering if you could explain "Zealots of Stockholm" by Childish Gambino. He is a great rapper and musician as well as a talented comedian, writer, and actor. I think "Zealots of Stockholm" is a very deep song and well worth explaining. Thank you! |-/

    Hi!! Hope you are doing fine :)
    Well, I actually thought if this other person that she's in a relationship with is also another part of herself. Like, a relationship between two sides of her own self, and maybe soberity would be the knowledge of both sides?
    I also kept thinking about the other meanings of "sober", like the sober colours and the metaphors you could do to it (as Lorde also has this connections to the colours, soecially when connected to music) or sober as being serious. Almost as if she was questioning: "What will we do when we're not as colourful as the parties we're at?" The colorfullness can represent many different feelings.
    And even the beat of the song is "calmer", I mean, it is not a slow song, but it is also not a really cheerfull beat. It is exactly the middle.
    Well, maybe I am being too much abstract...

    Meanwhile, if you're still trying to find some new songs to explain, then Linkin Park would be a great pick. Their new songs like Good Goodbye or Battle Symphony, even older, like Lost In The Echo are truly great (I guess you didn't dig into their music so far, correct me if I'm wrong).
