  • When Mum opens up about supporting food banks 🍽️
    PRE-ORDER SONG NOW: frtyfve.lnk.to...
Rox wanted to talk to you a bit about when we were in a very different position in our life and how the generosity of a stranger helped us at a time when we were really struggling. Worrying about putting food on the table is something millions of people face in the UK everyday and that is why we support Trussell Trust food banks to help build a Hunger Free Future!
The Trussell Trust support a nationwide network of food banks and together provide emergency food and support to people locked in poverty, while also campaigning for change to end the need for food banks in the UK.
100% of profits from every Pre-Order/download of this song will go towards the work of the Trussell Trust.

This one hits a hard note for me. When my husband had cancer and was just released from a 45 day stay in the hospital, we were out of money for pretty much everything. A friend at work told me about a church we could go to who had a food bank inside of it. When we got there, I handed them my drivers license for proof of residency. This lady says very loud, "She's a Denver person." Over and over she kept saying it. I got embarrassed for knowing she will calling me out, for what, I didn't know why. She told me to move over so she can help the next person. Finally someone comes over and told me that we don't live in their community and they couldn't help us. But they would allow a one time pass through and I couldn't come back. But I didn't want to take food from someone in their community. My husband came over and took my hand so we could go. I didn't want to do the "walk of shame" in front of everyone but we didn't have a choice. Mortified we walked out the door. A lady came running up with a 20 page document telling us where all the food banks were in the metro area. When we got to the car, I went over the packet. Food banks in Colorado are based on your address and who you can go to. We lived a 3 mile radius where there were NO food or clothing banks to help our our community. Not one place.
We had to get creative in meals. Having my young teenage step son didn't help with feeling worthless. I applied for food stamps and was denied as I made $18 a month more than the allotted amount and the same for free/reduced meals at school. When he heard us talking he got pissed at me for even trying to get help. I had him help with grocery shopping and the list of what to get. We used off brands, went to the discounted section first. No expensive meats or cheeses for us. Then he noticed "single" women who were not from our country using WIC "checks" to get name brand food. But we couldn't get help....he understood that we were not getting help as a US citizen. Then when we go outside, they are driving or being picked up by their boyfriends driving brand new cars. He asked me how fair that was to him. A 12/13 yrs kid understood what was happening. When his father gets Luekmia, nearly dying and we couldn't get help.
We now have a food bank a block away that I donate to all the time. During our lock down, I took food and cleaning supplies to help the less fortunate. I asked the if they needed anything.....shampoos/conditioner, soaps, deodorants. So I went to get what I could for $100. The next day, I walked down to the location to drop it off. A dad was in line, clearly distraught on being there waiting for help. I could tell he was crying. Heartbreaking to see this man break down not being able to provide for his family. NO one should feel shame getting help. We need to swallow our pride and take the hand outs and know it's okay to ask for help.

I can totally relate. When my kids were little we’d often have to choose between fuel to get to work, gas for the meter or food. One time when our youngest was a newborn and very ill, it was snowing outside, and we had to huddle in bed with no gas and electric.
It was the same when I was growing up, my mum would cover a slice of bread in gravy and pretend to us that she was eating the same dinner so we wouldn’t get upset.
The government have no idea how hard people work in this country for such little money and how much people struggle.
