- Vogue magazine is about to hit a big anniversary. A new book captures the fashion's Bible's most famous covers, and a digital archive will bring 120 years of publishing history to your computer screens. Serena Altschul gets a sneak peek.
being on the cover of vogue USED to mean something. It's time for Anna to pass the torch on to someone who is not so celebrity obsessed. Her team are too obsessed with trying to follow trends instead of making trends.
Agreed.
+BARTHOLOMEW ARMBRÜSTER BRAVO, i'm so waiting for her tenure at Vouge to be done, i used to LOVE VOGUE, i miss grace mirabella, she did gr8 things for vogue during her stay. I am pro Elle & Bazzar & anti-vogue because of this witch.
Anna Wintour was amazing for a while. Now Vogue is so overrated.
Kim kardashian in vogue ofc means something yeah(sarcasm)
Agreed!
The US Vogue needs to balance between the celebrities and high fashion models covers. One of the reasons for today's models not as influencial as they used to be
jsdreamz *influential
Yes. But that's the reason why - to never allow them so much power again.
I like the old covers more. They are more creative.
Ena Vuckovic yup the old covers looks amazing especially the white and black one
Especially in the 60s
The Art Deco ones are gorgeous.
fashion isn't just clothing; it's art, culture, and history
Exactly
I have a lot of vogue magazines in my room
It absolutely is, fashion can say so much without a single word.
not with those fonts and collages. She misinterpreted quilt with mogul runway brand.
I agree totally . Having a kardashian on the cover cheapens Vogue.
No it doesn't !!!!!!
Your comment cheapens they video
I cancelled my subscription after that issue.
Yes it does, they are trash.
+Natalya Good girl..you did the right thing, they don't deserve your money after that !
Vogue lost this prestige when they put Kim K on the cover.
Yes, because she is fat and short, not a model or a celebrity.
Well Kim is not a real celebrity, not an actress or a singer.
AthenaLolita2 Late but so True!
EXACTLY
It showed the lack of class of that woman's intentions. Sensationalism is what she goes for.
everyone hates kim kardashian yet EVERYONE is talking about her. thats exactly why she was on the cover.
Everyone is talking about global warming , ebola and obesity so what
IcedLipGloss Not hating Kim✌
i love KIM
I cancelled my subscription after that issue.
half her followers are bought… nobody talks about her.
To be in Vogue USED to mean something, dear Anna. Up until the moment when you put Kim Kardashian on the cover. That was when Vogue stopped being a Fashion Bible, a Role Model, an Inspiration and became a regular cheap publication, synonymous with no respect for real, hard-working genuine talent.
Anna should change the magazine name to Vague, as in I vaguely remember when Vogue was a fashion bible.
I actually don't like that Vogue started putting actors/singers on the cover. I believe that was when the industry started to shift again. In the 40's even through the early 60's, if you didn't have "the look" or "undeniable beauty" you were completely nexted. The late 60's and 70's brought a breakthrough. A great shift where looking relatable and being relatable was much more revered. It was an empowering time for the arts and the films and music of that time are just better in my opinion. It was about substance over superficiality. Then came 1989 and Madonna on the cover and it changed the game. We regressed back to the 50's and made artists/actors/singers have to look like models. Now with technology and photoshop aps, it's bled down to the masses and we have become a superficial society just wasting away at the idea of having another follower or getting another like. It was ground breaking, but for all the wrong reasons.
Well news flash, things change.
Yep. They do.
Emerson Wells there are a lot of beautiful women in the world who aren't famous. now that would be a great cover.
+Emerson Wells People like you should run a company !
Did she put Elon Musk's mother in her mag ? she is around 70 and used to be a runway model. A famous woman, being the mother of a famous fraud. Right up her alley !
Vogue has long lost its influence on the average woman. It's more like a parody of itself at this stage. I actually don't know any average, middle or certainly not working class woman who would buy it, it's just for the elite to circle-jerk over their amazingness, lol.
germankiwigal Average can't afford what is advertised in Vogue. Vogue is a catalog of advertised products with fashion in between to propel the pages. The purpose of the magazine is to make money for S.I. Newhouse. It is not some moral height to be achieved. The target audience can and does buy what companies pay millions to advertise to subscribers. Then there are the people who aspire to own what is shown in Vogue. They buy the magazine and that helps finance the printing. If I, a 67 year old man were found to help sell a purse or a scarf, or more profitably, a perfume, Vogue would put me on the cover. That's how it is.
Very true. I was flipping through it and yawned. Nothing in there is exciting or new or interesting. And I do enjoy runaway fashion so I don't even think the problem is that it doesn't appeal to the tastes of "regular" women, just that it's incredibly backwards and boring
That's what all magazines are
Vogue was never intended for the average audience. It is intended for the imaginative souls in the vast crowd of mediocrity who ASPIRE for the higher IDEAL of DIVINE BEAUTY that the VOGUE illusionary costume of elegance allows as an attainable END in itself.
@@ladylaurenia VOGUE is about ART. Colors and shapes and textures and the senses overwhelmed with NEWNESS and amore sensient awareness of vitality itself. VOGUE is about OPENNING the SELF to a SUPERNOVA celestial display of BRIGHT NEON STARS blinding us dreary humans to our mundane, boring ,despair known ashuman existence.
Being in Vogue meant something till Anna fucked it all up and put Kim and Kanye on the cover.
I hope she doesn't do that again...it was so not an Anna thing to do. I hope kimye doesn't make the cover again
I thought it was fantastic
I totally agree, Wintour can go back to England where she belong. Anna Wintour is not American and hopefully everyone here knows that fact.
lhost seeker And? Who cares that she's not americain? We're not racist. If an industry is tolerant, it's the fashion industry.
lhost seeker so what? does it mean we have to forget what her tremendous service for vogue in the last 27 years?
I really don't like Vogue. I subscribed to it for a year and really regretted it. You can rarely find any ready-to-wear clothes in vogue. The entire magazine is like a fashion show in a gala or something, nothing an average person can really wear in real life. I would recommend Glamour or Lucky instead, those two magazines are more practical for people who wants to wear something fashionable on a daily-basis.
Vogue or any fashion magazine is not about telling you what to wear. You can do that yourself if you are of average or even below and above average intelligence. It is about inspiration, escape, and understanding that fashion, clothing, accessories, beauty, skin care can be so much more than just a piece of product on a shelf. If you need daily inspiration, you can check out ASOS or Dailylook without paying a cent!
Christine L
EVERY fashion magazine is about "inspiration, escape and understanding that fashion, clothing, accessories, beauty, skin care can be so much more than just a piece of product on a shelf." You would be a really snobbish person if you were trying to say otherwise. Vogue's fashion is obviously more tailored to shows, not for ready-to-wear (yes, there ARE such things as ready-to-wear fashion as well in the market, or are you living under a rock?). I actually have many very high intelligent friends who have no clue how to dress fashionably, sometimes not even properly. Because fashion is not exactly in tune with most people who do high intellectual/intelligent stuff, as they spend less of their brain-cells on it (hence the stereotype of "nerds"). Other magazines, such as Glamour, are just better inspirations for me personally. I don't read a magazine to try to dress like the people in the magazines, I read magazines that I like precisely for inspiration, Vogue just gave me none. And actually I DO also JUDGE whether their fashion is good or not, and I don't always agree with what looks good, because I CAN think for myself, not just pouring my arms out to whichever magazine is the most hyped. Get over yourself.
LOL. Ridiculous. Then she goed and puts the same three Faces on Vogue on repeat meaning gigi bella and kendall. Its all about followers these days which in turn means nothing and cheapens a magazine that used to be prestigous.
And yet she lets Kim and Kanye on the cover. The fuck?
is miranda priestly in THE Devil wears Prada based on her ?
Yup.
Yes, hahaha!
🙄 duh 🙄!
Yes
vogue means something.. puts kimye on aprils vogue lmfao
APRIL FOOLS LOL
I hate to say it, but those who criticize fashion need to check themselves. When you go to a store to purchase a shirt or pants you not only look for something that fits but also something that looks nice. That is fashion. Fashion is part of our everyday life. It's art in every sence of the word. Do you know how fashion works? Big designers like Galliano or Lagerfeld have runway shows. Then smaller brands copy them, then smaller brands copy them and so on until you get what you buy at Wal-Mart. So that funky outfit you have on with your unshaven armpits and hair legs was a decendant of the outfit in Anna Wintours office.
Not always. Gap or H&M have designers too, and they don't always copy haute couture.... sometimes the couture copies THEM!
You’re glorifying something that is a lot more basic. Fashion isn’t going to revolutionize the world, it’s not going to do anything of any significant value. It’s pure aesthetic consumerism. People only care about so much because they are obsessed. It can be fun, but it’s not like it’s really doing much other than covering your back in a more stylish way.
They don't use models anymore :( it's so sad considering it is a fashion magazine
Lol who reads those magazines anymore 😆 🤣
It's funny how all of this is meaningless. It's only important because we are simply made to think it is.
Everything there ever was or will be is essentially meaningless unless meaning is given to it. Plato and Nietzche are having dinner in my head
@@roddo1955 not necessarily. Some things have intrinsic value on the basis that it is necessary to sustain life. Our basic needs are important. Everything else is simply a luxury humans have invented. For example, a doctor has more intrinsic value than Anna wintour because he saves lives. But due to the space created by vogue, many people in fashion have jobs. But when you strip away the noise, you realize that clothes are for protection. A piece of fabric remains a piece of Fabric even though humans have assigned a specific brand name or designer to it.
@@Jeremy-wp4yh To the ascetic food is not a necessity whilst sustenance is a necessity to be alive enough to ascetic. Don't get me wrong: i understand you completely. I approach it differently, less literal If you will.
What you said I get but That's like saying van Gogh has intrinsic less value than than my intake of water. False equivalency. Anyway that's what I had to say to that.
I'm tired of this fantasy that every Kardashian fan has : they all think everybody hates Kim because we're all allegedly jealous. But the fact is we simply don't care.
It was heartbreaking to see her on the cover of Vogue. Just sad.
it made the magazine look cheap ! a woman who cannot act, sing or play an instrument , made a sex tape and her mother promoted it. It's all it took. I hear, they also belong to one of the famous Hollywood satanic groups, so I expect, that is her real connection to the famous people. Most of Hollywood is decadent, deviant, hypocritical and many are actually , criminal. Adrenochrome is their new " drug " of choice. Look it up. Of course, I need to say ALLEGED ! as I did not see them do it . We still have freedom of speech and freedom of the press and we need to use it !

Vouge covers have gone down hill from the moment they started putting only celebrities
She is probably the most over rated person in Fashion. She isn't important the people IN Vogue are. The models that sell it.
Brian Glazer who picks the models? What they wear? Everything?
YOU DONT GET IT THEN.
Yes it does Vanessa. I was in the fashion industry and went to design school and modeled . Kim looks like a basic cute girl you see at the mall with hair extensions. She's no Kate moss or Linda evangelista. That is who Vogue is or should be reserved for. Leave Kim to the TMZ nonsense. She is a publicity rat.
The thing is not about beauty, but be actually relevant for fashion industry or relevant at all. I personally think Kim Kardashian hasn't the most exciting style nor any further relevance. Although Keeping Up with Kardashians may be my guilty pleasure sometimes, I recognise it's not good and remarkable.
Beauty is very subjective. Kate Moss would be considered average, even ugly in quite a few cultures and places. Beauty according to you would be based on your exposure to a certain kind of look or constant reinforcement of the idea a certain type of beauty, through mainstream media in your country or culture.

@@mariisoverit totally vapid too, with absolutely nothing to say.
@@32446 yep. I agree.
This woman is so pretentious and takes her job far too seriously.
I will buy Vogue the day they start to put engineers, doctors and not famous but successful people, short people, curvy people, real people who are really contributing but no ones know can be fashion too.
stfu
so vogue has to mean something? well it don't mean nothing when you cheapen your magazine that is supposedly known for it's high standards by putting someone on the cover who's done absolutely nothing to earn the fame she has.
I think they should've been on the cover bc they have influenced the world with their style. I agree it is in a negative way, but Vogue just made it obvious what the people want nowa days... suddenly, that is a or all the kardashians. 'We' made them famous, why complain now?
Nothing except selling her soul down the river, embarrassing herself, and losing respect for the sake of money, which I suppose is its own sacrifice. She'll never be taken seriously as a person and is famous for being a complete waste of life and a joke. She's overpaid, surely, but it doesn't sound like the greatest life to me.
I admire Anna for what she is, her way of dealing with things and showing the world fashion is not that superficial steriotype people have in mind. But I think it's time to bring a different concept to Vogue, like inclusion of not thin-to-the-bone girls on the cover. With the influence and power of that magazine, would help A LOT womens to accept their bodies. (Sorry, english is not my first language!)
I once picked up an issue and looked through it because I was shocked by how thick the magazine was. Ads, ads, ads. I sat down and didn't read anything. I counted each page that had an ad. If it was half a page, then two of them counted as a single page. End result: 75% of the magazine is advertising, 10% is columns and letters and the rest is where the actual stories are. It's trying too much to push a celebrity-based story these days and seems to have moved slightly AWAY from fashion.
+largol33t1 You said it!
Canceling my vogue subscription thanks to Kim
I'd like to see a documentary on how they chose Madonna on their first vogue celebrity cover. Cultural history!
However UNclassy Madonna may have been, she wasn't nearly as low or bad as those two, Kim and Kanye.
Simon Cooper
Please don’t compare Madonna to the Kardashians.
Anna Winter needs a total makeover! Including the sunglasses.
The woman is a caricature of herself
And then she puts Kim Kardashian in Vogue....nope, means nothing.
Kate B. She HAS to ..... she gets her orders from up above ..... they want to push a narcissist reality star mentality the most ..... that’s the most meaningful to them ..... to psychologically shape us this way
The fact that you're all speaking about the Kim k edition on all of these vogue videos I've been clicking on is the very reason she was on it. She's the talk of the time whether you love it or hate it
Katia yet people are interested in her = sales = money. Its not the worst thing a company has done for money.
so distaste is a qualifier for a vogue cover? oh puh-lease
Kim Kardashian?
Credibility was lost when Kim K was on the cover....
If someday I'm landed a US Vogue cover, I'll be world breaking news and Vogue's best selling issue ever!
The editing has such a 90s feel to it, I actually thought it was an old video at the start!
With Kardashains, Vogue lost its entire cachet.
'On connait la chanson'...
With the Kardashians & the like at the cover, 'Vogue' really means what?!...
i really want to be a graphic designer working for the magazine editorial of vogue i love beimg surrounded by fashion imfluemce and people who love to work and enjoy what they do. one can only dream.
Anyway, I'm completely obsessed with Anna Wintour lol
It used to mean something important, glamorous, unatainable, until she decided to unglamorize it to the point of becoming a joke...
These people need to get outdoors more. lol.
It means one thing: Anna Wintour: submit to me or else you fail. Btw, I'm British!!! I totally represent American sensibilities. Lololol
It used to mean something to be on the cover of Vogue. Now it means nothing since they put someone on the cover who became famous by making a sex tape.
Point: celebrities should not be on the covers. End point.
vince yeah
vince they have to sell magazines! It’s a business after all. Apparently, putting celebrities on the cover is what drives sales with the general public, in a perfect world it wouldn't happen. But hey! Go figure!
Vogue has way too much text on the covers now. Looks like garbage.
I agree. I think no celebrity ever looks quite as good on these covers as a great model would.
Never underestimate the public's fascination with celebrity trash. Unfortunately AW, KK and KW may have the last laugh.
You have a point, the difference between a great fashion editor like Diana Vreeland and Anna Wintour is Wintour has no sense of fun or humour.
Credibility lost the day Kim Kardashian got the cover.
"To be in Vogue has to mean something. . . " So what does that say to the vogue readership when sex-tape stars are placed on the cover of the mag.? Also Vogue circulation and sales have plummeted since AW went Kartrashian from 1,242,282 in 2008 to 192,152 in 2018 and conde nast has had to sell 3 major properties to fund her dalliances. Will this woman ever retire?
By putting Kimye on the cover, Anna has changed the game once more. Brilliant woman.
Lol…..The only "game change" Anna Wintour has done with this move?
Letting the "Fashion World" know that she lost it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like how the super models were on it and I think that celebrities should be on it from time to time but not every issue
When u started using insta models, models children of someone already famous and rich, kardashians etc u lost ur status and prestige. Now u rather views above worthy content.
Well being in Vogue sure doesnt mean anything anymore..however! If you want to take it in that direction, I suggest perhaps, Snooki, J WOW and Honey Booboo's mom on the cover! #nodiscrimination
Vogue is relevant because they make mistakes as well. It's what makes this magazine and the fashion world so fascinating imo. Just because Vogue is changing with the times, doesn't mean they will get it right always or impress everyone who are nostalgic for the times of the past. We're not going back to Magazine covers and sales. Forging a way forward will have challenges. Models do not have the same enigmatic appeal than what they used to have. And when there is a model on the cover - the model will be either too 'thin' or too 'fat' or too 'white' or too 'black' or too 'straight' or too 'gay' or too 'right' or too 'left'. One could hardly blame an editor to choose public recognition over uncertainty. The USA cannot even agree on a Jeopardy host. And how the heck will we agree on a Vogue cover?
In my opinion she's done a great job to keep Vogue relevant to those who actually love fashion - and the Kardashians, love or hate them, has done a lot for fashion. Let's be real here.
Hillary Clinton in Vogue has to mean n-o-t-h-i-n-g for sure!
I agree about another comment please bring back good models on the cover not celebrities they are already on other magazines
I love watching interviews of her, dislike her or not she's really a excellent role model to have, especially for women. She's definitely one of my top role models. She knows what she wants and makes no apologies for that. She's courageous enough to take risks and follow her instincts. That's the definition of strong person right there. Women take note: you're not going to get ahead by pandering to everyone's opinion and being too meek to make bold moves.
Unfortunately for Vogue, they need to compete against Instagram. Once, Vogue was the place to check out photographers, models, fashion, accessories, well, fashion overall, but now, people are doing it on their Instagrams, and it is free, which is the most appealing thing of it all. There is a vast pool of designers and photographers that do not land on Vogue, but do on your FYP in TikTok or Instagram.
I could give a rat's *ss about fashion. What I do respect are people who are passionate about something and as a result are very good at what they do. Anna Wintour is that.
What I don't respect are nitwits who have so little going on for themselves that they feel they have to dump on things about which they know little or nothing. :)
Too many celebs on the covers these days, bring back the models.
Really, to be in Vogue has to mean something! Certainly you wrong Anna Wintour!!!
Really Kim kardashing!!!!!!!!!!!!! Very disappointed :(
WOW ... That's the first time I've seen Anna laugh n smile!!!
fantastic!
I use to believe that until they posted Kim Kardashian on the cover and started recycling the same people over and over on the cover. Nothing ground breaking anymore
Really.... That's so bad.... VOGUE magazine has a history..... VOGUE cover has a history...... VOGUE articles tells abt the history..... I think VOGUE is just a VOGUE.... It doesn't have to be compared to any kind of magazines which deals with same kind of materials printed on those magazines.....
i’ve always wondered why Anna wears the sunglasses. and why has no one asked this in interviews. at least i have not seen any. also the older vogue covers are so much better.
She was was asked and she did give several reasons. One reason is that she doesn't want people to see her reaction when she goes to a fashion show. The other that she is photosensitive; on bright days, she constantly wears them because it causes pain(headaches probably) having to squint the whole time.
I understand enough in pushing to the next level in fashion but putting reality stars on the cover was absolutely horrendous. It is just my opinion.
"is that the right cover" ..she doesnt even realized the person who ask that is giving her an insult that she deserve. Am i the only one who thinks Grace Coddlington should be the editor instead of her, The vogue losses a sense of passion in its cinematic tone of noir and class, ugh when i watch the september issue I hated Anna, she doesnt even have an instict for beauty instead just an instict for whats trendy which losses in a snap of a month. but taste is iconic just like the old Vogue. In
Vogue is so superficial...
I am sorry but even if Anna put Kim K and her boyfriend on a Vogue cover, that mistake could never turn the Fashion Bible into a trash magazine. (Even if I am against using celebrities on Vogue cover, models are so much better for this.)
So then why the fuck did they put Kim Kardashian on the cover lmao
Usar anteojos de sol cuando estas puertas adentro es inadecuado y hasta de mala educación. Y esta mujer dice que debe usarse? Esta mal !
"To be in Vogue has to mean something" It means that the models are not getting paid!!!
i donnot know what do you think ? but anna is the greatest person i have ever known
I always have HATED celebrities over models on the Vogue Us covers.
but then the kardashians appeared in Vogue ...
Only money! Nothing else! Since the kardashians are on the cover you just became irrelevant!
AND THEN SHE PUT THE KARDASHIANS ON THE COVER.
The looks are worse and worse- a sign of the times
She doesn't really impress me. I don't think she dresses very well and she's not very articulate either. I don't know how people idolize her or consider her this huge icon. She's just.....meh.
🤣🤣🤣 the funny thing is that she thinks this of herself and so do the people around her. They say she has great instincts about trends and zeitgeist but she isnt very good at doing 'fashion'.. Her eye for marketing is what saved the magazine back in the 80's. Vogue truly became a 'glossy' a thin veneer without much substance but of the highest quality. I think it's the trendiness that killed it. Trends come and go but they are cyclical: after a while, you have seen it all in rotation. I say; keep it all. The day of the fashion magazine is over. It's the fashion-'blog' these days. And you can't read a bit and then pick it up again a bit, later. Because everything needs to be quick, quick and up to date. I think technology has outgrown the concept of the periodical. Under Vreeland, fashion was timeless. Just constant iterations.
Under Wintour fashion is trendy. And trends are made for the anxious. There's something frenetic about trends. Whereas timeless iconography....that to me is fashion.
to be in vogue HAD to mean something....please put it in the past tense.....sadly today it doesn't mean anything....please bring fashion back
Especially when Kim K was on it, oh well...
The beautiful Reporter should be on the cover of VOGUE.
Yes I remember her start on MTV back in the day
How can she get a real impression of the clothes being modeled when she has sunglasses on????
Anna Wintour is a joke
Don't understand why are amazed that Anna Wintour put Kim on the cover. Long ago, Vogue lost respect by putting famous narcissists without any kind of knowledge and inspiration towards fashion. It would have been a disgrace if Kim had appeared in Vogue Italia .. if it were so, would understand the reason for their disappointment and anger.
Anna Wintour is a genius. I love what she has done for the magazine over the years. I have been a subscriber for years and I have never been disappointed. Anna always knows what is going to work best for the magazine.
Vogue is all about following trends not making them now
ITS WINTOUR NOT WINTER!
KIM K :( why Anna?
Love her...
Anna Wintour: Fashion Historian
It is very sad in deed that Vogue had to source out to a British editor, being the fact that we have over 300million persons that potentially could have done this. (not taking ways the merits of Anna) just as in many other industries, we import and import.
Well we admire you, Anna!!!
It's part of our culture. What might seem like a crazy fashion trend in the magazines now could end up being "everyday plain clothes" or something that "everybody's wearing" in the future. High-waist pants and skirts used to be the norm, but now mid to low-rise ones are more popular, however, we're seeing a resurgence in high-waist outfits again in the magazines, so they may make a comeback as popular in the future.
I don't see why people have a problem with Kim Kardashian being featured on Vogue. Sure, people say she's only "famous for being famous" and how she doesn't have any talents and what not, but it's not about that! I don't know if any of you people have seen Kim on just any normal day, but I must say, she has a great sense of fashion. The whole family has a great sense of fashion. Kim K's look is actually kind of iconic this day in time. This is why they featured Kim. Chill out, people, and realize that Vogue has always been and will always be the greatest fashion magazine. Petty opinions don't phase Anna at all, and after all, it's only about fashion, not about the opinions of Vogue buyers in relation to the person on the front page.
She's a well dress women !!!! And a very sweet person
" ... it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff. "
