Thank you for your kind words, David. I do know that when I got back to the recorder in my 20's (I played in first grade) I was already a jazz player on trumpet. I made it an important point to study with a CLASSICAL teacher for a while to absorb some recorder specific technique.
03Venture As a kid I started with recorder til my dad got me a 'real' flute. Then I got a real recorder teacher and I'm back. Shoulda stayed put with the ''toy'' It's an awesome instrument
KimBurgieMusic Very welcome! I ended up getting a wooden recorder because of you! What a fun instrument to explore jazz with. What kind of recorder do you have?
This is Organic Real Jazz of the highest degree of excellence. I adore your improvisation. You have a lot of great ideas, and possess the dexterity of expressive execution.
This is a great piece for technical mastery using all the chromatic fingerings of such a versatile simple cheap instrument. Thank You for the inspiration.
You are the #1 Organic Real Jazz record- improvisor. Would like to hear this on any of the saxophones or flutes - the exact way it has been done, with ad lib, by this great virtuosic maestro. Even though it is relatively simple to get a sound on the recorder, the instrument is not that easy to play melodically - its not having naturally connected keys for certain sharp and/or flat notes; some of which are half-closed-made notes, so to speak. Quite a number of Carlos Antonio Jobim 's compositions are melodically built using chromaticisms; which makes each melody difficult to deliver accurately and effectively on the recorder. Excellent work, my friend.
KimBurgieMusic: I am everso grateful to you for sharing part of your musical expertise with the world. Naturally, I shall be scouting for and listening to some of your other videos - trumpet etc. I cannot get enough of your excellence on "Wave". In fact, I am taking the liberty of "stealing" fragmentary ideas of your improvisation for my personal practice and development. Thanks in advance, Kim!
This is so impressive that I do not know what to say! As a flute player who started learning music on the recorder thank you so much for sharing this !
Very nice. I do a gig with a sax player who does a couple of tunes on the recorder and I am sure he will be very impressed when I share this video with him. Thanks for posting this amazing performance.
This was totally awesome! I just started playing the recorder and after hearing you play it's really an inspiration to see what this little instrument can do. I'm putting this one down as Favorite. Thanks!
oh god, this is madness. the instrument were not meant to be played this advance. look how far you've take this instrument out of it's limit. I've seen only few person can do this level of performance. wow!! salute for you sir!
Awesome! I never played recorder as a youngster, so I had no pre-conceived ideas as to what it sounded like. Started learning from a classical teacher when in my 60s (!), playing mostly basics and then baroque-period music. Having said that, I love smooth jazz and - I never knew the recorder (aka the musician) could play jazz. Gee whiz - where have I been? Love it!
Great job on the head. Solo is full of Jazz language. I hear Bird & Stitt in there for sure. Incredibly difficult to improvise like that on recorder & make the chord changes. Major big time skills man. Amazing! I dig.
I put "jazz recorder" into Google as a joke but holy hell this is amazing.
same here lmao
"Jazz recorder" is correct!!
KimBurgieMusic Sad to say, Kim, my wife doesn't feel the same.
