- US (2019) REACTION VIDEO! FIRST TIME WATCHING!
Polls, early access and full reactions on Patreon / reelreviewswithjen Watch me watch this classic 2019 horror movie, Us, in this first time watching reaction video! Us tells the story of a family's enjoying their beach vacation turns to chaos when their doppelgängers appear and begin to terrorize them.
The film was written and directed by Jordan Peele. Us stars Lupita Nyong'o as Adelaide Wilson / Red, Winston Duke as Gabe Wilson / Abraham, Elisabeth Moss as Kitty Tyler / Dahlia, Tim Heidecker as Josh Tyler / Tex, Shahadi Wright Joseph as Zora Wilson / Umbrae, Evan Alex as Jason Wilson / Pluto, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Russel Thomas / Weyland, Anna Diop as Rayne Thomas / Eartha, Madison Curry as Young Adelaide Wilson / Young Red, Noelle Sheldon as Lindsey Tyler / Nix, Cali Sheldon as Becca Tyler / Io.
Check out this first time watching horror reaction video for Us, and see if I can make it as a horror movie rookie. Horror is a genre I've barely explored, mostly because I'm a huge wuss. Typically my Halloween movie viewings consist of Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown. This year I decided to expand my horror movie knowledge and try and watch these horror movie fan favourites.

😬😬😬😬 Terrifying reality
One of the messages here is Privilege vs the underprivileged. Shadow Adelaide proved the only real difference was circumstance. Shadow Adelaide grew up being able to speak and communicate like an average person, become educated and have a family because she placed herself in a home with a prosperous family. The real Adelaide's voice was taken away because her throat was damaged, and she grew up under the horrible environment of the shadows. Role's reversed, but given her knowledge and upbringing to that point, was able to rise to a position of leadership. Thus the one glove and plan to hold hands in unison because "Hands across America" and Michael Jackson were influential.
This is even set up early in the film, as Gabe is obsessed with living up to what the Tyler's have.
I saw this by myself in a large, empty theater (one of the last weeks it was in theaters at an off time weekday showing). I have never been so frightened in and leaving a theater in my life (being alone made it substantially creepier).😱😱
Peele based this movie on Mirror Image, a fantastic but still underseen Twilight Zone episode. Starring Vera Miles aka Lila Crane no less. I wish for the reboot they’d modeled the episodes more around Us than anything else, would’ve made for a better show.
Ohh interesting! I haven't watched The Twilight Zone 😬
Heroine I haven't seen the reboot of the twilight zone and not going to loved the original twilight zone from 1959 to 1964 saw it on tv land in 1995 when I was 11 until I was 13 in 1997🙃
@@mikesilva3868 Best show there is. : )
Hey Jen! LOVE this movie to death. Cant wait to watch your reaction
I love the Shinning and I have a reaction video for The Fly on my channel! Great suggestions and glad you like the videos!
@@ReelReviewsWithJen shinning is a classic 😊
That was a pretty cool film Jen. There's a bit of a "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers" vibe going on here with the doppelgangers. (Aliens replacing humans in Invasion.) The old T.V. series "Lost In Space" did a similar idea with the children being replaced by evil twins.
I have Invasion Of The Body Snatchers on the watchlist! I haven’t seen Lost In Space 😬 thanks for watching!
@@ReelReviewsWithJen You're not missing much. I remember it as a kid. Bit on the silly side, but fun I guess. I read that the scissors were a reference to a South Korean classic horror film called "A Tale Of Two Sisters" from 2003 where, if memory serves me right, one of the sisters is a ghost? I think.
@@ReelReviewsWithJen please react to Possessor (2020) & Color Out Of Space(2020). Both are absolutely crazy. Color Out Of Space is based on a HP Lovecraft story. If you don't know who HP Lovecraft is then here's a little bit of information on him. HP Lovecraft is a horror writer who specialized in cosmic horror. Color Out Of Space is one of his most famous short stories. He a lot short horror stories in the 1920s & 1930s. His most famous horror story was The Call Of Cthulhu. He died penniless before a lot of his Bevan famous. He was friends with the grandfather of the modern fantasy genre Robert E. Howard who most famously created one of oldest characters popular culture Conan The Barbarian. The character is enjoying a renewed popularity with the current ongoing comic book series being put out by Marvel Comics. Please also react to Conan The Barbarian (1982) starring Arnold Schwarzenegger & James Earl Jones.
@@brucster99b2 I have that on my foreign horror movie list, I haven't seen it yet!
@@jesselester9722 They are on the list and I've heard they are pretty crazy! I'm looking forward to watching them, thanks for the suggestions and thanks for watching!
I love horror movies. One of my favorites is Cabin In The Woods which is a love letter to horror movies. So if somebody suggests it, wait until you've watched a good amount of horror movies so that you appreciate it more.
I have watched it and it was way too early for me to fully appreciate it 😬
11:38, yes exactly, they want to be just like their human counterparts.
"I can't eye rolll big enough for that movie he just pulled" lol good stuff
Haha why thank you!
I mean, the real shadow, the character we follow is still Jason's mom, because Adelaide wouldn't have gone the same path if they hadn't switched
Oh that’s very true indeed, such a cool movie. Thanks for watching!
15:47* always have a dark sense bid humor in these movies.
One thing I noticed, I don´t know if anyone has commented on it: among the videotapes at the beginning is one titled "Thursday Primetime". I looked up the shows on that slot at that time, and the most prominent, the most prominent sitcom full stop at that time, was "The Cosby Show", which was obviously huge, and, if I recall, the first time a middle-class black family was the centre of a sitcom. I wonder if this relates in any way to the dark alternate side we now know. And, as far as sequels go, there is a TV show that came out 6 weeks ago called "Them". The poster font is almost identical to that of us, but Jordan Peele is not involved. However, when I first heard of it, I harboured a small desire that they might be linked. I haven´t seen it to find this out, but I doubt it.
I went to university with a girl who thought owls were mythical creatures.
😬😬😬
The fact that the first physical attack is a kneecapping also reminded me of Funny Games, of which I´ve only seen the Austrian original. I saw it at a time when I decided to see every single film theatrically released. I went in knowing nothing. I ended up fainting, and an usher revived me!
The shadow people see where their counterparts live...
“It’s free real estate.”
This is a terrifying Psychological Horror Thriller!
I really enjoyed it! Lots to think about
14:25, oh no!!!😱😱😱
The Staircase, soon to be a limited drama series..
13:45, always have your keys on you.
ALWAYS! Get an extra set if you need!
15:10, lol!! That was dark, but funny.
Being the film nerd I am I'm compelled to say the technique when they have 2 actors one of whom is right in front of the camera and the other is some distance away they use a split diopter to allow them to be both in focus.
12:10, yes I did watch the Original Version to Funny Games.
9:30, that's right: those are their shadows.
😌haven't seen this movie yet
6:41😂
haven't seen this movie yet, so I'm just gonna give this a like and comment for now, and come back later 👍
Thank you! Much appreciated!
10:00, thats exactly show it was done.
12:48, killing your shadow would probably traumatize you for life.
There’s not enough therapy in the world lol
Horror got interesting again in the last few years and I hope that was not a blip.
I'd recommend Hereditary and Midsommar or if you are looking for something as disturbing but not as well known Possesor and The Empty Man.
I've seen Hereditary and Midsommar and I wish I would have watched them as reactions but it probably just would have been 😬 that face for 90 minutes lol I have Possessor on the list and I'll add The Empty Man, thanks for the suggestions!
Ok, so you watched "Us" now you should check out "Them".
I'll add it to the list! Thanks for the suggestion!
Ron you mean the 1954 film them about the giant ants that attack Los Angeles 🤗
@@mikesilva3868 Of course. It's a classic. And goes with the "pronoun" theme.
@@ronjeffrey8641 agreed 😊
Recommend a song to you...which was inspired by US😂 if you are interested pls listen to
Dreamcatcher: Title track BEcause
Enjoy the songs.. 😉
Lets see will you guys like it or not....check out the detail even the choreography 😁
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😉
Thank you for watching! You too!
Hey, have you seen "Let Me In"?
I have not, I’ll add it to the list!
Since you like cheesey 80's horror & sci-fi/adventure so much, you think you can do reactions to:
- The Return of the Living Dead
- Near Dark
- Night of the Demons (1988)
- The Beastmaster
- The Hidden (1987)
- The Wraith
- Legend (1985....Tangerine Dream score)
From the 90s, can you do:
- Dead Alive (Peter Jackson director)
- Biozombie (funny Chinese horror/comedy film....the dubbed version is better.)
- Uzumaki (Japanese 2000...subtitled is better).
Oooh something fairly recent. Sadly this is still on my must watch list so I can’t watch your react. I liked Get Out so hopefully this one is good too.
It was just added to Netflix! Yeah I'm really enjoying Jordan Peele's films so far, thanks for watching!
Could you react to "Manos: The Hands of Fate" it was The Room of it's time.
I'll add it to the list, thanks for the suggestion!
I'm going to be honest. I didn't really like this movie. It was good right up until The Tethered got an origin story. It would have been better if there was no explanation.
There is no explanation. The origin story for the Tethered was all made up by Red - how would she know anything about government experiments? It’s just what she believes, trying to make sense of the world she was thrown into.
Whatever works for you and helps you sleep at night.
@@BigGator5 That's been pretty much confirmed by Jordan Peele 🤷♂️
Fabian Hebestreit ..."Word Of God" retconning after the backlash, does not impress me. The work has to stand on its own. An unreliable narrator has to have some basis in the narrative.
Take "The Joker" for example. We are clued in the fact that he is a unreliable narrator early and it is reinforced toward the end. So that when we finish the movie, people can legitimately question everything about the movie.
There's nothing in the narrative to suggest or support the idea that Red is an unreliable narrator. Without using Peele, why would Red specifically speculate about The Tethered being experiments based on everything in the movie?
@@BigGator5 Because she watched C.H.U.D. as a kid which is about government experiments living underground. You can see the VHS box of that film in the very first scene of the movie.
Why would you think she's a reliable narrator in that scene? There was no way for her to ever learn who the Thethered really are.
The first actually bad movie you've reacted to 😋
You want bad watch the underwater movie my family member rented it and hated they said it was a ripoff of the 1979 film alien😊
@@mikesilva3868 Underwater has nothing even remotely similar in it to Alien. Kind of a weird comparison.
US is far from bad
