The best period of the LAPO was under Mehta and Giulini. With Mehta, they made some terrific recordings for Decca , which are even today unsurpassed. He turned the LAPO in a very fresh sounding virtuosic orchestra and Giulini gave the orchestra some ' old world' deepness and tradition back....
At his peak he was conductor with the most flamboyant style I have ever seen. It was a delight to watch him.
