Thanks Christine . No one has ever shown me the correct way to cut with a rotary cutter. It’s good to learn the proper way. Good luck with your operation tomorrow. Hope all goes well. Chris is a sweetheart. You are so cute together x
Gold star for Chris.⭐ Lovely to meet him. Great cutting tips, thank you. I hope all goes well with your surgery tomorrow and wishing you a speedy recovery.
Christine’s tutorials are always the most professional ones can be found. Thanks for your tenacity explaining the different techniques, leaving it to personal preference. May God grant you mercy & pain free recovery,Psalms 51:53- For By his stripes we are healed.Amen
Ah, it's so lovely to meet Chris, you clearly have a lot of fun together, he's so good to help you out while recovering. These are super good practice tips and it's good to be reminded of them every now and then. Thanks Christine
This was such a good lesson and reminder even for those experienced in using a rotary cutter. Chris is a good student, he asked good questions and it was fun to see you both in the video.
Chris did very well. Thank you for teaching all of us. Doesn’t hurt to have a refresher. Always learning. 😁 All the best for your surgery and recovery. ❤🙏🏼💐
Fantastic basic 101 to the rotary cutter, some more videos with teaching Chris will be great for all newbies out there and some of us oldies who may have got into bad habits ! Note to self order a new ruler as mine has munch marks !!! 😅
Thank you Chris, you did great & you're never too old for beer!! It's a great video for learning to cut accurately & safely. I love all your videos. Praying for you that all goes well with your surgery & you have a speedy recovery. Thank you for what you do.
I knew it would be great video, but it was great. He was trying to be such a good student, I laughed a lot. I think I have seen that person who you were talking about, still makes me shiver. It felt like I was watching a horror movie. Not only is it dangerous but it makes it so much more difficult for themselves. Take care and hoping for a speedy recovery.
Thanks Chris! You make a great guest star😉. So glad Christine has you to help out while she’s recovering. I would go batshit crazy if I had to go an extended period without my creative outlets. If that ever comes up for me, hopefully I will have a great helper available as well
So many useful tips, invaluable for me as a beginner, if only I'd found something like this sooner, please do something on measuring accurately and cutting multiple pieces of fabric, many thanks for this brilliant tutorial, best wishes for your op.
Hi Christine. Just a note to say thanks about the tips on the electric cutter. Mine just arrived from Amazon 10 minutes ago. I unpacked it straight away and have been cutting up pieces to make some tote bags. For the life of me I do not know why I didn't buy one years ago. No more aching scissor hands xx
Thank you for doing this video Christine! I’ve been teaching quilting for 20 years, and I’m a fanatic about people closing their blades, I’ve heard far too many horror stories about injuries that have required fingers being stitched. I am also mortified by how some people use a rotary cutter on videos, and aren’t using safe practices. For a quilt, I will never use the lines on a mat-only the lines on the ruler as they’re more accurate. For bags or pillows or other larger cuts, that aren’t as precise, I very occasionally will use the mat lines, but they also get distorted when the same line is used a lot and aren’t good for precision quilting. Wishing you all the best with your surgery and a speedy recovery!
Thanks Crystal. I was concerned I may have been too harsh about safe practices, but these things can be so dangerous. I still can't get the image of that person sawing her fabric the way she did out of my head.😱
This is wonderful! I’ve been using rotary cutters for many years and I learned valuable things from your methods. A beginners mind can yield treasures. Thank you! ❤
Thanks for another lovely video! I wish you a speedy recovery, make the most of your downtime, take a breather and enjoy this time to just breath and relax!
Thank you for this video - cool video and with such great instructions from a patient teacher no wonder Chris got the hang of it! Interesting to see the difference between someone who has done it a million times and a beginner.
Great to see you both together, Chris did a super job for his first go, wishing you all the best for your surgery Christine, I thought is was Friday just gone. Enjoy some down time,
Thanks Christine! You taught me some new things as well. I had always used scissors and just recently started using a rotary cutter. Chris did a great!
Thanks Christine, when I did lessons the first lesson was put your blade when your not using it. One lady on a retreat didn't listen, well I don't need to tell you what the result was. Luckily we had a nurse in the class.. I'll be thinking of you tomorrow.😊
Thanks Janet. This happens all the time. Every time I'd do a new class, there would usually be at least one that would forget to close their blade. I'm just as bad with scissors. I can't walk away from a table with them left open even a little bit😁
I use an eight pound dumb-bell on the other end of the ruler away from me. If it is my big square ruler, I use two (eight pound) dumb-bells. Both of my dumb-bells have the soft non-slip coating on them (so that they don't scratch the surface they are placed on, and to keep them from slipping out of sweaty hands). The lines have faded on my mat; however, I have always used the lines on my ruler. Not all rulers are the same (some of them don't measure true). I know two women who taught their husbands how to help them with their cutting and sewing. Both husbands now love to cut, sew, quilt, and design their own crafted items. One of them, Tom, has won many blue ribbons for his quilting. Quilting wasn't considered an ART until men started doing it.
I used to have several male customers that would compete with their wives over their tapestries and embroidery items. The men did better work each time. It was quite funny 😁
Chris did a great job learning and you taught very well too. Good luck with your surgery tomorrow (or maybe that’s today now? Not sure when video was). I hope you heal well and quickly afterwards 🥰❤️🩹🥰
You and Chris had me laughing. I get those same looks from my hubby if I try and teach him anything sewing related. You'll need a chart for stars to track Chris's progress in the sewing room. 😁⭐✴️✳️⭐
Thank you so much for this lesson. I sliced my finger open the second time I used my cutter. I ended up getting one that self-retracts and found my ruler slides all the time (I’ll start practising my crab walk). Can you only cut straight lines with a rotary cutter? I love your channel, you explain things so well and that you are a local (Victorian). Good luck with the surgery tomorrow and have a speedy recovery.❤❤
Thanks Suzy. You can sew curves with your rotary cutter as well. I did a video a while back using different scissors and cutters, and showed cutting curves. You should find it in the sewing tips playlist. "Beginners guide to cutting fabric"😀
Hi Christine , it's hard giving up cutting fabric to have someone else do it for you. I've taught the grands how now , but it still makes me nervous when the blade is in someone else's hands😮. Good demonstration
Thank you so much for this! I've struggled and twisted trying to use my tools...you'd think you'd just know how to do it, some do I suppose but I am not one! I really appreciate it! I probably already missed you going for your surgery- I wish you a speedy recovery! - 🤗 Monica ❤
Great tips Christine. I haven’t used my rotary cutter yet so it was great for me. Prayers for your surgery tomorrow and for a speedy recovery. Woo hoo Chris you’re going to be a great apprentice. I’m hoping I can cut as good as you. I’ve missed quite a few videos Christine I’m now going to have to binge watch to catch up but the trouble is I’ve got to do that with everyone, it’s going to take me forever. Anyway I really hope your surgery goes very well for you tomorrow and you’re not into much pain afterwards Christine.
I am so impressed teaching us even on the eve of surgery! Best of luck and great thoughts coming your way. Plus, I learnt a lot because I’m not the best cutter.🙏🤗
When I learned the cutting, there wasn't special grip rulers and I was taught to place my pinky finger off the side to help prevent slipping. My issue with teaching that is simply not having a wide span. I'm using better rulers these day, as I am no longer a beginner, but the price of the special dotted line is prohibited to a beginner piercer. I have several older rulers with the gripping stuff bought in a roll, and I highly recommend this product to all persons who cannot afford the highest level of rulers, especially when we have just started the journey into piecing. I have 26 years behind my piecing journey, and only started changing out the most used rulers over maybe 5 years.
Hi Christine just popped on to wish you good luck for tomorrow, Please keep us up dated , even if no projects ,we would all love to know how you are doing. and how well Chris is doing with you out of action, All the best, Speedy recovery, Avril x
If Chris needs any male fabric cutter companionship, he could check out Matt Jordan from Jordan Fabrics. 😊 Their "500,00 Giveaway" video has a great crab crawl portion at about 9 minutes I believe. Their video called "Tour our Company" starts straight off I believe with Matt cutting fabric. I looked for quite sometime for another of Matt's cutting videos. It must be at the end of one of their tutorials. It was from him that I learned the trick to use a handweight on the ruler. It reduces the amount of the crab crawl, I feel. Best wishes for your surgery Christine. I look forward to your videos. I live on the northern edge of NY state.
I'm a big fan of Jordan fabrics. I started using a 5lb dumbbell on my ruler like Donna and Matt do. It makes long cuts so much easier and faster. No more slipping rulers and more accurate cuts.
Thank you for sharing, appreciate your good works. Kindly show how to cut on bias with the ruler please, thank you. Blessings for your surgery and recovery
Thanks Sajo. I did a bias cutting video about a year ago. You'll find it in the sewing tips playlist. If it doesn't suit, let me know, and I'll do another when I recover😊
So hope all goes well with your surgery, those blades even when no good for cutting, are still so so sharp. How scarey that blade sounded in that cutter a bit blunt to cut , but would definitely cut you. Well useful tips to people today. Very worth while. I am left handed so it looked odd coming from the other way when cutting. Good luck with your cutting Chris. Definite pass. Take carex
Thank you Christine, this video was great! I recently started using a rotary cutter and like Chris, my fabric kept bunching at the beginning. I also noticed my ruler tends to slip often. Could this be from my table being too tall? I'm only 4'10" and usually cut on my dinning table. Thanks Chris you're a great student!
I have a hard time cutting fabric with my rotary cutter. I have a new blade have to apply so much pressure. Makes me nervous. I don't want to get hurt. Do cutting mats go bad? Mine seems kind of hard. I always close my blade before it leaves my hand btw
Very brave of Chris. He definitely deserves a beer or a cup of tea. Sending you very best wishes for your operation.
Thanks Sarah. He's a good man. 😊
Thanks Christine . No one has ever shown me the correct way to cut with a rotary cutter. It’s good to learn the proper way. Good luck with your operation tomorrow. Hope all goes well. Chris is a sweetheart. You are so cute together x
Thanks Christine. Chris is a real gem. Life wouldn't be the same without him😁
Finally showed me how to cut strips with ruler and/or mat. Thank you!!! 😊

How do you know when to change the blade? Thanks. I’ve had a terrible time cutting fabric…this is great!
Linda, if you need to press hard, or keep cutting the same spot, it's time to change the blade 😀
When I learned the cutting, there wasn't special grip rulers and I was taught to place my pinky finger off the side to help prevent slipping. My issue with teaching that is simply not having a wide span. I remember when I first started, using a clear plastic roll that adhered to the underside of my rulers as well. It made a huge difference 😁
Thank you for this video, I never learned how to properly use a rotary cutter and mat. All the best tomorrow!

Could this be from my table being too tall? I'm only 4'10" and usually cut on my dinning table. Thanks Chris you're a great student!
A tall table could be a problem for you Lisa. You want it so you're applying a little more downward pressure🙂
Need to know how to change the blade
That's a good idea Mary😁
I have a hard time cutting fabric with my rotary cutter. I have a new blade have to apply so much pressure. Makes me nervous. I don't want to get hurt. Do cutting mats go bad? Mine seems kind of hard. I always close my blade before it leaves my hand btw
Yes, cutting mats can go bad. Try using the other side to see if that helps. It's also better to get a good quality blade for your cutter. 😊
Hello, is there any books or magazine for the bigner. If there is wher can i get it.
Good question. I've never seen a book or magazine.😁
I am thinking of buying an industrial sewing machine what do recommend good rules
