I cannot recommend Shiga Kogen as a better alternative to Hakuba enough. It is also a Nagano ski area, but is larger, and almost entirely connected. You can spend the day skiing from one end of the valley to the other without ever having to take a shuttle. There is a beautiful onsen town in the valley below, and a wide selection of hotels at the top, bottom, and even middle of the ski runs in the mountains themselves. There is also a very famous national park between the town and the resorts, which is a hot springs for monkeys that you can visit.
