    Beast was definitely an overlooked show. People remember it for the trombone section only, yet it has so many good parts to it and was probably one of crowns best percussion years (Also those repeated sections just go to show how good their brass is)

    • @AdamTanPercussion
      @AdamTanPercussion  3 года назад +2

      The percussion is sooo good

    • @michaellinnehan9589

      The problem is its odd pacing and lack of focus. It never really comes together as something that screams “BEAST!” The opener is amazing and triumphant and loud and totally beastly, but then the second movement is some kind of pseudo percussion feature that doesn’t go anywhere (even Adam was taken aback when it just kind of ends abruptly). It’s just...flat.
      Then the ballad comes to shift the show energy down even more. But, bizarrely, it’s a Beatles tune that would work great with a story (think “Beauty and the Beast”), but there’s no beast character to focus on.
      The percussion feature after is a little confusing, as there was already a percussion feature, but they’re so good (and you get a lot more front ensemble) that it works to rev up the energy again. But...where’s the beast? The drumline has been that aggressive all show, but the rest of corps isn’t doing much.
      The trombones come in to finally give us some loud brass and a rock-out. The platform is rocking and they’re acting like monkeys, so it’s getting back to being beastly. But then it’s over and they rush through an ending and throw up some tarps.
      The biggest brass hits come during the opener, then wayyyyy later at the end of the ballad, end of the second percussion feature and at the end of the show. That makes the show seem flat with a few spikes of excitement thrown in to keep the audience interested. The “beast” ended up being some people crawling on the ground at the beginning and then some jumping off a rocking platform...and that’s it. This show could have been about vampires (or anything else kind of dark with a soft spot for love) with different props, which means it wasn’t really fully fleshed out. It’s not terrible, it just didn’t deliver on what the fans were expecting.

      @@michaellinnehan9589 So well performed, but so weird. I never felt like this show had a chance to win and the design was severely lacking focus. I remember them trying to explain what Beast meant even up to the end of the season. I never got it either.

    • @markalusss
      @markalusss 3 года назад +1

      I honestly only just started loving this show. I remember when they announced it I was like “Hard pass”. Everyone is right about the lack of focus and flow with the show. I think the exceptional performance by the members made up for the confusion in its design.

    1) It’s been 10 years since that Cavaliers show, yet I never knew they played those splits, mainly because the camera is focused on the tenors playing while upside down. That’s also a sentence I never expected to write.
    2) Seeing my drum corps’ equipment truck (Glassmen) in the background is a little sad.

    2018 was the year Crown Drums turned the corner. the balls of the entire book were out and swinging, really a big improvement from their other books, in terms of heavy hiting, and how they scored.

    Fun fact: Crown is known for reusing previous shows musical elements, at 14:27 the xylophone run is a blend of the part at 18:00 and the end of their 2016 show. They also had a show call A Sec2nd Chance that reused their closer from a previous show.
