    This is beautiful. Back in the day, it was Bob Ross & Bill Alexander that got me into painting. I learned early ( age 12 or so) They both taught me not to be intimidated, and have fun with it. This lesson reminds me of those days. It also makes me want to get back to oils. currently paint watercolors and acrylics now. That liquid clear has some nice effects. I've not worked with that before. interesting.

    Ello Paul! SO gorgeous that I finally had to attempt 2 firsts for me...auroras and a cabin. The auroras came out beautifully and, after 2 scrape-offs that cabin came out pretty good as well so thanks for this video too Paul! I almost didn't attempt the cabin (my true bravery test after all before it) and then I remembered your comment about NO cabin? Then I HAD to! That was a bigger bravery test for me than any last minute big ole tree! 😆
    Question: I've done the still bodies of water, the streams, the ocean "crasher waves" and the water behind it and your instruction on all of that was superb! Have you done the "little waves" that you would see if you were in a boat on a lake during a small breeze? Don''t know what you would call it exactly...the kind of tiny 4-5" waves that would be all around you? I would love to see you do a video on that if that' a possibility. 😃
    Thanks again Paul, not only with the wonderful practical tutorial but the nudging you put in there as well! Sounds like you've navigated that issue before! LOL
    Be blessed my friend!

It also teached you to trust your own skills and judgement. Keep up the good work 😍

    What kind of brushes do you use, what are the bristles made of to be exact?? It's one thing I never heard Bob Ross talk about.

    • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt  Год назад

      Hi Dale - I use Bob Ross 1" landscape brushes. And, for the most part his fans filberts liners and of course a Bob Ross palette knife. When I started ass an instructor 20 + years ago they were all hog bristle. But over time things have changed and the new brushes feel a little different. I think there may be a synthetic bristle in the mix. But thats just a guess. Over the past few years I've seen manufacturers switching to synthetic to get a more reliable result when painting. Some of them are really good. Hope this answers your question 😃

    • @dalebabcock722
      @dalebabcock722 Год назад

      @PaulRansonArt thank you for the response. I bought some synthetic fan brushes, but they collapsed as soon as I put paint on them, I'm pretty sure they're for only watercolors, but they claim to be for oil paints as well. . I just received my order of hog bristle fan brushes, and they are a lot more durable. The next best thing I got was what they call White China bristle for my 2 inch and 1.5 inch brushes. I am still waiting on my order from Amazon of hog bristle 2" and 1.5" brushes. They are on a two-week backorder.
      I'm going to attempt to paint exactly what you painted. Wish me luck.!! .

    • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt  Год назад

      I've tried a couple as well and yes they're too soft for oils. I've also tried the synthetic white brushes which work quite well. I think I still prefer the original hog brushes. But, I'm sure it won't be long before the synthetic ones are just as good😃

    • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt  Год назад +1

      Hi Trish - the effects are no so easliy achieved in acrylics because they dry so quickly. Oils stay wet long enough to blend and brush out the aurora. However, if you have acrylucs try using a retarder to slow the drying times. You'll still have to work quickly but you stand a better chance. Once you start using oils on a painting you cant switch back into acrylics. So its acrylics first 😍😎

      Hi - the black canvas is painted black with a fast drying water soluable paint like gesso or black acrylic. These are alway left to dry before using oil paint. hi! i am looking forward to trying this painting out soon, it’ll be a first for me so I am a little nervous! • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt  2 месяца назад +1

      I put colour all over the canvas and make sure there's a good colour when you check it. If no you get grey patches where there is no colour for the white to pick up - Maybe if you have a small test canvas try a little experiment first - help calm those nerves eh? You'll do great I'm sure - Paul 😃😃😍😍

  • @jenau2603
    @jenau2603 Год назад

    Hey, it's me again. I already did the Northern Lights, but I have failed at the mountain a couple of times now. I just wanted to ask how I can improve on this one. Is there a certain technique? I always struggled with taking the black paint underneath into the highlighted and shadow colors. Do I need a pattern knife like you, or is my common scraper alright? I got one bigger and one smaller one. Should the cavern be wet or dry? I always waited for it to be dry before I tried to paint the mountains. If you have any ideas on how I could improve, I would love to know. Have a Great Day !

    • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt  Год назад +1

      Hi Jenau - not sure I get the whole question so I'll make a stab at it 😃If you find mountains difficult with a palette knife, did you see my last video - No Fear Mountains. I did the whole mountain with brushes! Now, you might find a proper artist palette knife makes all the difference. Its more flexable and lighter than a paint scraper. You need a delicate touch so try and get one like mine with an angled edge not a flat one! " Should the cavern be wet or dry? " The mountains are painted wet on wet no dry canvas. This helps the colours bond and makes a much nicer painting. - There's no secret to improvement, just practice. 😃😎

    Good afternoon! I really like your picture with the northern lights, I want to try to draw, but I don't understand about the liquid transparent one that you do at the beginning, is it just a pity to dilute the paints? I am grateful in advance🙏Sincerely, Larisa

    • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt  11 месяцев назад

      Hello Larisa - I'm using oil paints for this and the liquid transparent is a slow drying clear liquid. It helps to thin the paint a little and to make it easier to blend on the canvas. Oil paint is often very dry and difficult to spread. If you don't have this product you can thin your oil paints with a tiny drop of linseed oil. Its important that the painting stays wet to make the Northern Lights effect. Acrylic paints dry very quickly so this may be more difficult. - Hope this helps 😃😃😍😍😎😎

    Instead of using the liquid clear, can you use liquid white?

    • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hello and thank you for your question. This painting uses transparent colours like Phthalos Green or Blue or Alizarin Crimson. They need a clear base oil like liquid clear to remain transparent. Only when the titanium white is used do the colousr pop out from the canvas. If you start with liquid white it will look like a green or blue foggy day and the nightime effect will be lost. If you don't have liquid clear try using the smallest amount of linseed oil then colour. Don't let this dry before painting the aurora. This is a wet oil painting technique. At a pinch Bob used the colours straight to the canvas as well. The paint will be super dry and tough to blend but if thats the only option try that too. Hope this helps - Paul 😃😎

      Hello - selling products that contain carcinogenic materials has been banned for decades. All products should have been tested before sale. If you check the packaging you should find an approved rating for your country. But if in doubt check with the manufacturer. 😃😎

      @@PaulRansonArt Thank you very much for your message. Sorry I am asking a lot of questions but do you maybe know if the black gesso and liquid clear will work on a canvas made of fabric? (because I saw that the liquid clear you use will only work on paper - I may be wrong though)

    • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt  5 месяцев назад +1

      @@goldninja9374 great question! Actually the gesso and liquid clear are designed to be used on a canvas. It's me thats pushes the boundary of what can be done. I regularly use paper as a DIY practice surface. I use a heavy weight decorators lining paper and give it two good coats of gesso ( or acrylic ) to seal the surface. It's important to make the suface non-absorbant so the oil stays wet for blending.

    would this work with acryllic paint?

    • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt  Год назад +1

      Hello - thansk for stopping by and leaving a question. I have seen Northern Lights painted with acrylic so it is possible. But I think you'll need to use a retarder to slow the drying time of the paint and then work quickly before it dries. I don't think you'll be able to copy my exact process because oils dry over many hours which gives you lots of blending time. You might have to experiment a bit. Best wishes - Paul 😄😄😎😎

      Hmmm... I've never tried. I think a few experimnets using fabric dyes is the way to go. Other than that maybe printing on fabric is a possibility.😃
