    That diagnosing logic of "button doesn't work so it must be the button" is unfortunately a plague within the trades. I do refrigeration work and it's distressing how many people just replace parts without verifying anything.

    That unholy samsung/apple core2duo could easily still run linux and play internet radio all day long in a garage or something. Nice to see it fixed. Bench power supplies are invaluable. I bought one specifically after watching you and Sorin using them

    • @piernov
      @piernov 5 месяцев назад +2

      It doesn't have to be reduced to "internet radio". Assuming it has a decent Core 2 (if it's a Merom it should be upgradable to Penryn), this can play Full HD RUclips videos fine, a lot of people don't need much more than that. Preferable to have 4GB of RAM and an SSD of course, especially if using Windows.
      Sadly getting it fixed and upgraded at a repair shop is generally not worth it economically.

      @@piernov True. For whatever reason Andy wanted me to fix it and I did. Neither have come back so the first one must be good with another PSU. I did say the batteries are probably bad but he was OK with that.

    when the picture valve was really the tube that did not often go in them day's but that was what they thought .

    Stupid question: Instead of modding that universal charger, couldn't you just put a DMM in amp mode in series with in the output? There are even inexpensive clamp meters that can measure DC (e.g. Uni-T UT 210E). Don't know how precise they'd be but perhaps worth a test. All you'd have to do is separate the positive from the negative wire in the output. You wouldn't even have to cut wires.

    I’m going to be working with audio amps. Some rails require 100V. What power supply configuration would you suggest?

    • @anthonyshiels9273
      @anthonyshiels9273 5 месяцев назад +4

      For safety you should have:
      1. Mains isolation transformer
      2. "Dim bulb" current limiter
      3. 0 to 250 Volt autotransformer or "Variac".
      Paul Carlson from Mr. Carlson's Lab has info about this.

      @@jonathanrose456correct but it is not advisable to apply the full mains voltage to a device that MAY have shorted capacitors in it per Mr. Carlson's Lab advice.

    • @piernov

      A bad battery can definitely prevent the machine from completing POST (or from turning on at all). Seen that with low-end Toshiba like C50/C55, but I'm sure it can happen to others.

      @@piernov True - I've seen this with desktop motherboards too

    • @piernov
      @piernov 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@LearnElectronicsRepairI was thinking about the main battery pack of the laptop, but this is indeed true for the RTC coin cell battery as well.
      Good example on desktops is the garbage ECS RC410-M2 board. The RTCRST# signal is derived from the coin cell battery voltage, rather than after the dual diode (to get voltage from the 3VSB rail when available), so low or missing battery will cause erratic behaviour during POST.

      Asus desktop motherboards wont boot if the CMOS battery is depleted.
