The customer will be happy it works, they probably will say don't bother with the new switch its fine as is :) great fix

customer might buy a solder iron and replace the switch himself if he watches this video 🤣 i would be happy with the bodge it's not a center piece fancy gaming pc it's small so it's out the way

The customer is very happy. His wife uses this for her work and she needed it running. He says if I can find the correct switch then do it but if I can't he's quite happy as it is as long as it is reliable which so far it is.

I have seen a few switches with the same issue, but have had the luxury of a replacement systemboard, or whole unit. The switches don't like hard pushes and start to fail, which results in harder pressure and breaking the switch and or case. Sorry cannot help with a part no. I would also mention that with similar plastic case fronts, is to check that the face plate button is operating the switch. A loose cover can appear to be a no-boot when in fact a broken plastic faceplate or button is the issue.
The 'Bodge' job is called a workaround when talking to the customer😜 I discus it with them first.

Richard, this is not a "bodge" repair it's a "temporary" repair to get it working quickly for the customer. There is absolutely nothing unsafe about this repair and you should definitely charge the customer. The fact that you intend to provide the customer with a quote for a permanent repair highlights to the customer that it's not your usual standard of workmanship. 👍

Nothing wrong with doing a repair like you have done. It’s only a problem if you tell the customer that you have done a proper repair. The fact that they need it to work and you have got it working means that they are happy and it gives you time to find the correct replacement part for it

I am thinking that a short stem tactile switch would have fitted where the original switch was, but yes, a good fix and probably a happy customer. Well done sir.

Maybe you could have used a magnet glued into the button and behind it a reed switch? I worked as a PC designer and system builder and we supplied PCs to UK schools. One of the tests we did was to apply excessive force to all switches and buttons to make sure the kids couldn't break them.

    I've done similar fixes.
I'm reminded of a switch I bought as a kid in the early 60's at an old hardware store.
It was my love of old scary movies that influenced my purchase of an old single blade version of a knife switch on a white ceramic base. The kind always used to send the volts to Frankenstein but on a smaller scale.
I actually still have that switch! It would have looked great mounted to the outside of your computer to go with the Frankenstein repair!

I did a similar repair in the past. It needed a button at 90 degrees so I used a replacement shoulder button for an xbox360 controller. Basically it's a common 6mm x 6mm momentary push button with a 90 degree mounting. They are through-hole so I bent the pins out and surface mounted it and it worked very well. I added some epoxy resin glue to make it rock solid.

Yeah I've done something similar i had a customer that had a laptop with a broken power button, but couldn't find any replacement was a weird slide power button on the side of it so i drilled a hole on the palmrest area, soldered a button on a small protoboard and hot glued it in and just ran the wire as you did as he just wanted to be able to use it and it was a pretty old laptop so i don't see the problem with the button if it works it works! haven't heard from him since that lol
and of course i asked the customer before if it was okay to drill a hole to fix it, seemed like he was just gonna throw it away if it wasn't fixed
Edit: that might be a "TL3340" switch looks really similar to it!

The jobs fixed, the item works and they can use it.
If I was the customer, I'd be over the moon that you came up with a temporary solution, without damaging the item, allowing the item to be used, whilst waiting for the repair.
This is the difference with your thinking. A normal repair shop would just stick in on the shelf, and then onto another job, whilst the part arrives, if it ever does!
    Great job! As usual!

I limit bodegery to equipment life or death situations or as temporary repairs (usually to find out what else is broken before putting together a parts list). You got it up and running so certainly charge the customer. But I would do a little research, price a replacement part and let the customer decide - that's their job. Thank you for another interesting video! Regards, David

That is what I would do and wouln't have any qualms in charging them for the fix. It is a safe repair that you did not circumvent anything. That repair will lprobably last for a long time if they do not decide to proceed with getting a replacement for the original switch.

Only if its a paid service. Also don’t clean the outside if it’s dirty unless this is covered in the repair quote. I’ve had a customer tell me I scratched their laptop because I cleaned it up for them. It was covered in crud and the crud / dirt was covering all the scratches up. Once cleaned you could see some of scratches all over. The customer ruined the outside and tried to convince me to buy him a new top case cover for his laptop because there “no scratches” before… 😂 He didn’t take care of his laptop clearly yet said it was like brand new when brought it in. I didn’t replace it and told him he can take any other devices to a different shop for future repairs. Time is money and I don’t have the time to be arguing with people like that.

A fix is a fix especially when the item is not of great value. Otherwise it would be cheaper to buy another one the same and put her harddrive in it. This is where people like you shine as a dealer would not touch it. Reuse, reduce and recycle.only when they can make money from it.

They will probably be happy with the fix, so charge them, they could not do it and they can now use it.
If they have money to burn and don't mind the wait they may ask for a proper switch be installed.
They will probably understand you cant get all parts off the shelf, Devices that small usually have parts designed just for that particular device.

I personally would try to hide the switch inside, but most likely, in your situation, the switch you used wouldn't fit. Maybe some smaller switch, if I had it, but overall, the final result achieved :). Regards, Jerry from Australia.
