Just a quick note. A lot of connection corrosion problems are easily fixed with a Deoxit spray. Spray into connector. then brush away corrosion with soft non metallic brush and blow out
with canned air. Works really well and saves time replacing parts. Hope this helps. really like your videos.
not that simple on a usb-c port. there are 22 tiny pins inside. if two pins touch several months in the future it can blow up the usb controller. It's not worth the risk. just replace the port and next time take better care of your expensive laptop instead of treating it like a piece of trash. apple users are especially guilty of that lol
The sheer number of random usb-c ports available that perform the exact same function just shows the manufacturers have learned nothing over the last 50 years. Instead of streamlining production, minimizing and standardizing their parts inventory they are still trying to screw over the consumer by making parts that are a new design but have exactly the same function as the previous design for no other reason than to screw over the consumer. This is exactly the same thing that happened with CRT TV's.... every one has a different flyback transformer and all are incompatible with each other but all TV's do exactly the same thing in the end so there's no reason to make a different flyback except to screw over the consumer. It's a pity the EU didn't tell manufacturers they must use the same usb port design and stop trying to re-invent the wheel. All pretty typical really. If someone was born in 1900 and lived 100 years they would have seen many great inventions and been amazed by technology. Now the amazement is technology going backwards and manufacturers going out of their way to screw the consumer. I wonder how bad it's going to be in another 50-100 years LOL
My guess would be a fried PD chip. There's great channel that might be helpful: Electronics Repair School.
PD controller IC is probably fried as well. I’ve changed plenty of them and some cost 20-40$ USD which is ridiculous. I have to charge a lot more for such a basic repair. Everyone wants USB C but don’t realize USB C uses a chip to negotiate the voltages. Some of those IC’s you can’t get unless you have a donor or get really lucky finding a different brand chip that has the same layout and does the same thing. We really need to keep the barrel jacks or even Lenovo’s rectangle power jack. Super easy to fix compared to all these USB C charge ports now. If this is going to be a standard they need to use a standard PD Charing IC that’s available to us who do these repairs.
best charging for laptops is with a standard DC jack round connector.... People should stay away from usb-c charging on laptops.
@@orange11squares This will be impossible in the EU by the end of this year as all chargeable electronic devices have to be fitted with only a USB-C charging port if they are sold in the EU
@@LearnElectronicsRepair i know, but adding a DC jack barrel is not forbidden, as long as there is a usb-c charging port, i think, i hope.
Full standard USB-C connectors must have 24 pins, and in particular PD-enabled ones have at least a dozen pins used. A very beautiful video about was made by Andreas Spiess, if you want to go deep in the subject.
Nice job. You should try to get some juice into the battery carefully, if it isn't knackered already, it won't do any good leaving it dead flat while you wait for the connectors to turn up - the laptop is not going to try and charge a dead flat battery anyway.
Thanks for the hint 🙂
The other port should also work, but I spotted some corrosion on there as well.
If it never negotiates 20v, we have a dead pd controller.
most laptops only have one power-delivery port specifically for that purpose. the other ports don't deliver power so they can't be used for power/charging.
@@g4z-kb7ct I don't remembered a laptop with such configuration.
The 2 ports are always interchangeable.
@@BkR090 Not on this laptop
Thanks for sharing Richard. Always learn something from the videos. 👍. Artie
G,day Richard from Sydney Australia. Thank you for the demonstration to:
* Use USB-c volt meter
* Inspect USB-c connections and presence of corrosion
* Remove the back of the laptop and check the lithium battery for stored energy
* Remove PCB and detect power supply using needle probes.
* Remove USB-c input connector from soldering.

To use USB Analyzer in series like that you have to make sure you have PD USB-C cable connected from anaalyzer to laptop itself. Also there is a switch (at least on my AVHzY CT-3 is) which turns on/off PD of analyzer itself. Ideally you would like to turn it off so only negotiation between power supply and receiver and connecting cable (PD cables have negotiation chip on them) happens, not interrupted by analyzer.
Just ordered the usb tester. Thank you
when you need to mount the connector prime pads with leaded solder 180 degrees
and apply hot air from the back of the pcb .
the lenovo psu i have does not show anything on my power meter until they have contact with the PD chip.
and maybe the battery is so flat that it is locked try to see if it can take power from your power supply set a few volts above what it says on it possibly 2 to 3 amps
Heya, nice 1st part of this repair can't wait to see you get the data of the ssd
Eh? Getting data off a ssd is as simple as copying the files from My Documents or the Desktop or other random places where random unorganized people put random files. Anyway the ssd isn't faulty and the data is just fine. Just install the m.2 in an external m.2 case and keep it as a backup. That's what I do, I have about 10 external m.2 cases with all my previous ssd's. Think smarter not harder.
@Learn Electronics Repair, hello, please can you tell me the model of the motherboard of this lenovo equipment, thank you.
Well Rick you can try to powerup the laptop using the other USB C port. Usually they both can be used for charging.
I wonder if an ultrasonic cleaner would of worked holding the board and lead connector upright? Might be worth a test.
I would apply a charge to the battery long enough to get it to power up the laptop if indeed the laptop powers up off the battery. I wonder if the SI chip got hit and is unable to negotitate the charging voltage to the battery.
Due to ,liquid the warranty is void however they could of given her a price to get it repaired. The lenovo agent is not that good in my opinion.
I would try droping that old type c in ultrasonic bath. Replacement is always replacement quality...
There's Detlef's next project, a fully connected USB-C breakout board/analyzer like the HDMI one. Having removed the socket it would enable you to check if it really is the corrosion that's causing the problem.
The EC chip needs to communicate with both pd controller chips if even one is faulty the laptop will not negotiate the power. So I would say either one or both pd chips are fried. Both pd chips need to give the OK to the EC chip before it will negotiate the 19 volts required.
We were both of the same thoughts but turned out the lack of negotiation was something more obvious I should have spotted in the fist place 😉
@@LearnElectronicsRepairtry charging the battery first from the power supply directly on the battery connector, see if you get a different reaction or if it starts negotiating after it sees some voltage on the battery (some of these new laptops do strange things when there’s no battery) or see if the laptop powers on after some juice
I think I saw you desoldar an other component at the end of the video
PD can take a few seconds to communicate/negotiate and switch to higher voltage.
I’m curious to know if you put a power supply directly onto the battery terminals and give it some charge how it would react, or if it even powers on from battery. Might be worth trying until the connector shows up, as someone else here said I’d also try charging using the other usb C , in a lot of these new laptops they both charge , I’d also try charging after I give the battery some juice to see if it suddenly starts charging once it detects a battery with some voltage
This is something I'm interested to try on video 😉
@@LearnElectronicsRepair Nice, let’s see what happens
Since removing the corroded port I’m curious. Did you try the other port to see if the laptop would negotiate the 19 volts?
Most of those laptops only have one charging port, regardless of the shape they come in. Can't hurt to try though.
Yes. It does not power up from the other USB-C and only the corroded one is marked as power input on the casing
You shot be able to use both usb-c connector or is only one connector usable for charging?
Only one is marked as the power USB-C on the laptop - for whatever reason
@@LearnElectronicsRepair would be very interesting to be able to "debug" understand the usb-c protocol on a very basic level just to determine the state or health of a usb-c port.
May be using a break out board on which you can connect ie a nowerdays cheap 8 channel logic analyser
@@therealspixycat I'll chat with Detlef about this, it sounds interesting
Are there a lot of Canaries on 'The Canary Islands' and do you have a one ? if so is it a boy or a girl and what's its name please ? cheers.
I’d imagine so, I’m guessing they go cheap there 😊
The name Islas Canarias is likely derived from the Latin name Canariae Insulae, meaning "Islands of the Dogs"
Lots of canaries, many singing, probably.
@@ralphj4012 just for the trill of it 🤣
As @shaunmorrissey pointed out, the Canary Islands are named after the dogs that lived here, the word Canary is from the same latin root that English gets the word Canine, meaning dog. We do have Canaries (the birds) here though they are not yellow, they are a kinda greenish brown colour and we see (and hear) them often in our garden. The cage birds called Canaries are yellow due to some thing in their diet and/or selective breeding.
www.barcelo.com Are there Canaries on the Canary Islands?
Canary | Songbird, Colorful Plumage, Pet | Britannica | The canary is native to the Canary, Azores, and Madeira islands. The wild form is streak-backed and mostly greenish brown.
LOL a manufacturers warranty is for manufacturing defaults etc. spilling liquid on your laptop is the users fault not the manufacturers so not a surprise they refused to repair it under warranty!
the laptop wouldn't power on if there was only just over 5 volts going into it
Hi mr. richard my name is ricardo is it ok if i can email you thank you 🙏🏽
Sure
if they wont fix it then really it dosent have a warranty
Wrong! A warranty could be for anything. In this case, it's probably warranted against defects in manufacturing and workmanship. It's not warrented against misuse or abuse. Liquid damage would indicate either misuse (you used it to paddle your canoe) or abuse (you washed in the dishwasher or spilled a drink on it).
Used to work at AKAI importer which was still big at the time. This sorta stuff shown here was repaired under warranty. If it was a quick and easy fix. Doing a estimate and getting an answer back was more of a hassle.
@@markanderson2904 Agreed
yep, my bad i wrote it before i watched the whole video
In my opinion, the usb C connector isn't suitable enough to deliver so many power or withstand mechanical stresses over time.
Question about ruclips.net/video/JLDIMLTbsa8/видео.htmlsi=8UqG441h7hL8JXZH.
Whats about the power amp ?? Did you find the reason about the aktiv fault protection ???
