  • New Haas F1 team principal Ayao Komatsu has a huge task on his hands.
Not only must he fill the shoes of larger-than-life predecessor Guenther Steiner, but he must also haul Haas off the bottom of the constructors’ championship - and fast.
Komatsu only found out he was taking over as team boss when owner Gene Haas gave him the good news at the end of last year. He says his priority is to give his team “the environment and framework so they can show their best”.
He’s revealed the first details of his masterplan for achieving that. And first on the agenda is to stress that he is absolutely not trying to be Guenther Steiner.

Properly communicating among members of large projects is a huge challenge even if they are located all in the same location/building. Having people spread out over 3 locations in vastly different time zones is insane. Going to be impossible without huge amounts of overhead in meetings, travels etc. no matter who is the boss.

He showed interest back then, when F1 was having a hard time. From F1's point of view, Haas is probably way more genuine than what Andretti has been doing rn, because one joined the band during its down time, while the other tried to get on the band wagon when everything is red hot.

Haas cannot improve if they continue to use the infrastructure they are using now. They need to address the communication issues within their workforce which is stretched across 3 worksites in different timezones.
It's hard to say if sacking Gunther in place of Komatsu would improve the situation, but there is a point to be made that under Gunther's leadership Haas hasn't made a significant improvement in the standings since it started.

I'm starting to wonder if the problem isn't at the top, Gene himself. There's been quite a few times he seems... disconnected to how F1 works. While he might be right in saying there's untapped potential with the current levels of investment, hence why he refuses to spend anymore. If he's not careful, all the OTHER teams that are doubling down with investments will make it quite difficult for Haas to keep up.

Hell 2018 and their resurgence in 2022 proves there's something there. While they will never be more than a midfield team i do agree that Haas are not operating at their ceiling and there's more potential from what they currently have, it just needs extracting. Their issues are logistics, development and communication

Honda and Yamaha have a world of trouble in MotoGP from designing and building the bikes in Japan and racing them out of a base in Spain. They don't have the ability to react quickly unlike Aprilia or Ducati who are integrated like a slick F1 team like Red Bull Racing where the race team, design and manufacturing are one and the same (anything identified by the race team gets immediately fed into the system for a fix to be designed and made). Yet HAAS expects to operate not just with two bases but with *three bases* -- one for design, one for manufacture and one for racing. You can't expect that to work well...

Nothing will change, Ayao was under Steiner the chief technical officer for the team so the car not working was down to him, looking at one episode of Drive to Survive Steiner gave Ayao a good talking to and told him to fix it (the car).
As for the factory it should all be under one roof not spread around the globe, Gene Haas needs to get his head out of the sand, am betting this is the last year for this team unless they pull a rabit from the hat.

Haas will sell at the end of next season to Andretti, Gene is a business man and knows that an F1 team who's in last sells for less than a team who finishes in 7th or 8th, simple business. Because Haas have a good car in qualy, they need not focus on outright pace all in all, rather a 70%-30% on race day to qualy, an overall decent car will sell better than a qualy or race "merchant". Haas has already given up, but Andretti have a new HQ being built, Haas might also look for a deal that will discount the overall sale price by keeping Haas as a title sponsor without having to pay title sponsor money

Why would Andretti bother buying a bad team when they've already invested in their own team? Andretti has FIA approval, which means come 2026 they can race in Formula 1 no matter what the other teams say, Andretti just won't get paid. But also, F1 broadcasts won't be allowed to show Andretti's cars, or mention them, or show their employees. You do the math, are F1 broadcasts seriously going to blur out and ignore Andretti if they show up at Bahrain in 2026? No. They're going to be forced to let Andretti join, or have the whole sport made a laughing stock.

It doesn't matter who's running the team if the car is shite, which it is and will continue to be without more investment from Gene Haas (GH) . Sadly, GH doesn't really give a toss about the development of the car, he's happy to see it trundling around at the back of the midfield for a bit of advertiser revenue and some brand recognition.

If the whole team structure is flawed and short of much needed strategic investment (as seems the case looking from the outside) then changing TP will have as much effect as a fart in a hurricane. Which begs the questions; does Gene Haas really get F1? Does he have the time and energy to commit given his other projects?

I have been to the HAAS CNC headquarters in Oxnard, California for work and have met GENE HAAS. I cannot understand why British commentators pronounce his surname HAAS as HASS. Gene pronounces his last name as HAWS ( Phonetic), focussing on the double A sound in his name, NOT HASSS (phonetic) as the announcers constantly mispronounce.

    • @BiggieTrismegistus
      @BiggieTrismegistus 2 месяца назад +1

I think it's because there was another Haas in racing for decades (Carl Haas) who pronounced his name the way The Race and most commentators do. It's not a common name so they just went with how they'd always pronounced "Haas".

Gene Haas is open about not caring if they are competitive. Haas uses his F1 team to sell CNC machines. They will never be anywhere near the top as long as Gene owns the team. Getting to the top requires investment and Gene is comitted to spending the bare minimum. If Haas wants any chance to become a top team he needs to bring in someone like Andretti who has a ton of cash, backing from an actual manufactuer and an actual desire to win. Outside of that, Haas will stay at the botttom until he gets bored and leaves.

Here is something to think about. Everything that makes Haas fast are the parts they buy. Everything that makes the car slow is what Gene does not want to invest into. There is simply no way that equipment that produced the car aero dynamics back in 2015 can perform like what is available today. And investing in infrastructure is the only way to make the current model have the best car and respect the financial ceiling imposed by F1. Buying parts at retail price and putting them into a Ford Model T chassis is simply not going to cut-it.
Gene just does not seem to understand that you cannot run an F1 team like you run a tool shop. F1 is constant investments for improve return$.
No investments no winning, no winning no money. When the money needed to run an F1 team is as high as this is a faux-pas can cost dearly.
Money Gram coming in for example was entirely Gunther's achievement.
    What can poor Ayao do?

If the history of F1 shows us anything, perhaps it is that you can change the names on the doors as much as you like, but an underfunded team will perform like an underfunded team.
