Favorite album of the year so far. I think Anthony is right that this record is full of vocal and instrumental abstractions, however, that’s why it appeals to me. Not every artist has to have an album filled brim to brim with intricate thoughts and lyrical perspective. If there is no proper way to articulate your thoughts with words - focusing into offering genuine, raw (and yes, at times abstract) emotion is plenty fine with me
I agree 100% This album gave me sounds and feelings from music that I have never heard/felt before. It’s a very liminal album, almost feels like it was made in an alternate reality, but slipped into ours.

Undertand the criticism but the production, while unconventional, just really works for me on this album. The stripped back, slightly disjointed and "messy" instrumentation just tickles my brain in the right way. Not for everyone buts it's my favorite project in a long time.
As a childhood friend of his, I can say that Mike’s been working for a very long time to get where he is and deserves more. He’s always been an incredible musician even at the beginning and also a very polite person. The abstract concepts of the album sonically are what make this record stand out, which is something most people on here are already mentioning. I agree with some of Fantano's points, a lot of the songs peak and then fall off, and definitely leave some more on the table. However, I only really found that on the first listen. All the tracks that I liked first listen and easily on my daily repeat and I can't wait to go back through the whole album and find some more, but I do wish some of their crescendo'd a little more.

This is kinda the take you had for the ooze by king krule, which has grown on me a lot since I heard your review. Love that album, so I’ll probably check this one out.
I’m surprised Fantano didn’t rate this higher-it’s one of the most novelty-driven, hipster records I’ve come across in a while. While I enjoy the abstract ideas, I have to agree with a lot of the critiques mentioned. On first listen to his catalog, my favorite tracks are Dimeback and Dream Police. They’re steeped in nostalgia and carry an infectiously moody vibe, but something feels missing, and I can’t quite put my finger on it. That said, I stumbled upon the live version of Candy (the video on the bus), and suddenly, the identity of the music resonated with me a lot more. It feels like a “style over substance” project, but when you bring in the eccentricity of a moody emo kid effortlessly channeling Prince on guitar, it’s hard not to appreciate it. Still, I feel like MK could really benefit from working with an interesting co producer-someone like Trent Reznor-to help ground the music and let it truly blossom. I’m hopeful that we’re witnessing the start of something special here and that he’ll evolve into creating something as iconic as Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill. Right now, it feels like the music needs an anchor-it can’t all just be one wash of darkness, at least not for me. I really hope his career doesn’t fade away, though, because there’s so much potential here.
Antony, you don't understand that his guitar tone is Ground Breaking... But you don't Understand Tone you're a failed bassist who clout chases real Musician's/Rappers and thinks he can speak at the table, go back to the kids table my guy. Mk. Gee and Dijon have made some of the best music out right now. Just sit down and color...
Time and time again I am amazed at how Fantano doesn’t really resonate with a lot of the more chiller more understated textures and vibes nowadays. He’s either really into “spicy” music or really well constructed pop with strong vocals. I knew listening to this album that he was going to give it something of a 5-6 when in my eyes this is a refreshing feat of music. Mk.Gee really did an amazing job of creating his own musical world with this one. I’ll be jamming to this one for years to come.

There is a difference between something that is objectively good and those that you don't like. This album is objectively good.
After what I saw on X I can say bro is really the internet busiest music nerd no cap🧢
Wow, first time Fantano really missed. This album is a strong 8 to 9!
Least fav Candy is actually wild to me
Strong 9/10 for me personally but i get it
critics are lame. this is one of the best albums of this century
Going through and liking every comment on this. Huge miss for Fantano on this one but it warms my heart to see all you repping Mk.Gee like that🥲. One of the most shockingly beautiful musical creations I’ve ever heard in my life, and I’m glad Fantano is bringing more attention to it if nothing else.
This album gets better and better with time as the melodies and textures of the songs burrow deep into your brain and soul. Slowly but surely became my AOTY, even over NxWorries and Clairo
melon i'm never forgiving you for that thumbnail
I kinda get what he’s saying… if he’s saying that every song on this album is a masterpiece but the live versions are leagues better than the album
For the people saying he’s “shifting music” or “changing music” lol in what way?
album of the year so far
The album's sparseness, randomness, rawness - that's what's makes it so refreshing IMO
huuuuuuuuge miss on this review mate
Nope.
I mean is his opinion and that's fine.
But this is actually a really good album.
It’s about time you gave Mk.gee some acknowledgement
9/10 to a light 10/10 for me

Wow. This rating has to take some credibility away from this guy. Sad he didn’t get it.
such an amazing album, mk.gee is so insane at what he does
coming back 8 months later this is definitely aoty for me, and that's saying something since the last month has had a lot of great album drops from artists I love

fantano did mike dirty, the unconventional sounds r what makes this album good. Its messy, dark, blurry but thats what makes it so good
