I had several friends from Berklee in this iteration of the BRB. It's great to see them here, looking a little lo-res, but pretty much as I remember them from 35 years ago, and sounding like it was yesterday.
Buddy's last band was absolutely one of his best. Great chops and big hearted swing all around! Eric Miyashiro and Greg Gisbert on 1st and 2nd trumpet really giving it up. What an amazing ( and brutal) book Buddy had.
great chart of milestones! i was elated when he brought this chart out of the mothballs..this became my solo theme song in a band i had formed using a couple of ex buddy sidemen dave dana 1969 git john burr (bass) br 1976 (aka the killer force) but yeah buddy was playing great all the way thru the end..truly a "drum wonder" i know i loved his vibe his playing his charts what else is there? i can say this as much as i truly miss the man and his drums i equally mis hearing these charts bc none will ever sound quite this way ever again at least in my lifetime..it truly quite a grievous loss for me dare i say as well as the rest of us who loved this music..
Thank you VERY much for posting this. I really appreciate it. I've found myself missing B very much of late. So for that reason - i.e,, for sentimental reasons - I wanted to watch the very last full filmed concert we have of The Drum Wonder. And this is it. I hadn't watched this in a long time. I was completely blown away. Because the drums weren't captured too crisply on the audio track, I focused my hearing attention on Buddy in a big way while watching. There are so many fabulous nuances of musical brilliance. And of course there's plenty of not so subtle magnificence too. I dare say, it's just not possible for anyone to love this man's playing more than I do.
Thanks Cloudview787 for your comments. I've watched all of your uploads of Buddy and just wish there was more footage of this incredible drummer. I have most of his L.P.s and was fortunate to see him live 3 times in the U.K. Most memorable being a midnight show in the New Theatre, Cardiff, Wales. The place was packed, Buddy kicked off the set and when the band joined in I thought it sounded 'woolly'. Buddy was also perplexed and was looking all around and to the wings. They finished the song and Buddy asked the trumpet guy ( who was right by the P.A. mixer) to tap the mic stand....it was soon evident that he had not turned the p.a. on !..Buddy calmly said ' this audience have paid good money to see a show and we are going to give them one, turn it on !!!'. The band started all over again, it was a brilliant night but I guess there was a trumpet missing the following night.... He was a one off.... p.s you may have already seen my video ' Buddy Rich 'bits of Buddy' on my channel....if not, I extracted most of Buddy's drum solos with reasonable sound.... worth a listen, all the best artfrob
@@georgekilroy2670 correct It's possible Shawnee was influenced by Cherokee, but this is the correct title. The Tonight Show band recorded it then Buddy added it to the book

One night Buddy was standing against a wall waiting to go on and I told him thanks for coming to D-land every year, and he just smiled. He was verrrry fine and mellow-quite the opposite of his stage persona. Cathy sang a tune one of the nights and Buddy practically blew her off the stage he was so loud.
Nice post here, there will never be another era like that, and certainly never another drummer like Buddy. I keep trying though! Check out my home-made clips on here (practice time and solos). My tributes to the master drummer of all time.
wow im fairly certain hes using a brilliant ride..never thought hed ever use one..no "zing" with the back of the brush handle across a brilliant cymbal huh
I saw the concert taped at Disneyland and they had to delete a part of it because Buddy was yelling out to turn a fan off or he was gonna walk off the stage. A park employee quickly unplugged the fan and Buddy continued to play-a very demanding man but he always got what he wanted! He usually made fun of Disney between sets by calling the Electric Light Parade, "that cock-a-mamie parade".
Right before "Big Swing Face" at 42:08, the entire band is scrambling to find the chart in their books - except for Steve Marcus. He's got it memorized.
All was right in the world when Steve Marcus was sitting in that chair and Buddy was showing the world that big bands were not dead. I remember buying my copy of Big Swing Face and having the opportunity to see the band live at Massey Hall in Toronto. Buddy was 40 minutes late for the concert and explained when he arrived that he got stuck in traffic after being a guest along with Gene Krupa on a tv show shoot. He said he asked Krupa to stop by and sit in at this concert but unfortunately he never showed up. That would have been momentus. It was a sad day when I heard Buddy was gone but his legend lives on.
Miyashiro was replaced during the latter part of the concert, i wonder if he was leaving the band and he was kind of training the new guy. Buddy got alot of his new players through the recommendation of his departing musicians, he rarely had to audition anyone. I was in military basic training in 1967 with a guy who played trombone with the newly formed big band in '66.
Bad recording. All I hear is bass and a few horns. I saw this incarnation at Disneyland Anaheim summer of '86... Beautiful drum set and Buddy was playing a cowhide on his snare...
Yes I shared a stage occasionally with Jay back in the ‘80s in Scotland. and I was blown away by his scholarship to Berkelee and his place in BR’ s band and still a great player today.
"Muthafuckers! I'm not miked- I ain't even lit- I'm the greatest drummer in the fuckin world, and all they miked is you- clammin' all over the joint! I'm gonna kill that sound guy, he couldn't mix shit! Muthafuckers! Get off my band!"
+erzug I spent an hour trying to e.q this. The original vhs sounded like Buddy was playing bongos in a wardrobe. Although there's a mike above the kit I'm not sure it was on...
+artfrob Thanks. This is the worst I've heard. Wasn't thrilled with his early Slingerland snare drums either. Perhaps, that is why he stuck to the Fibes snare for a while.
+erzug No!! he is playing a set of Slingerland "Radio kings" from the 1940's...They actually sound quite good!! That 26' bass drum sounds like a cannon in other videos. Check some other clips from 1984 to 86! That snare did not record well in this video! but sounds great in others too!!
Buddy’s ability to play at a high level until he died was remarkable.
This concert kicks ass geeze thanx!!!, nice hear a prominent bass sound,😊😊😊😊😊

thanks for the post....what a treat...the master.
+GREGG DELFINER Your'e welcome. I've just viewed your Copenhagen 86 upload and it is superb, audio & visually. Thanks
Nice. Thanks a lot.
You can really tell Buddy liked the first Trombone Chair player and his lead Trumpet player...smiling at them all through the concert!
+artfrob Even taking a back seat, he still kicked all drummers butts!
and always will...
nothing but the best drummer ever to walk this planet! I love and miss you Bernard! You cant touch this!
Any band is at the mercy of the venue's sound system!
Love the interaction been between the trumpet and drums
Matt Harris piano on Big Swing Face hit it out of the park!
He also arranged Just InTime
Awesome.
There are so many great drummer in the world. However, I challenge anyone to find another drummer that can swing a big band the way Buddy Rich could.
