I discovered BiSH when I went to Japan for the Babymetal Tokyo Dome concert in 2016. I was invited to go to a alt-idol festival where a bunch of upcoming idol's would perform. Most were run off the mill cutesy idol music, but then BiSH came on and I was blown away. And their fans are just as intense as Babymetal fans, if not more. I was hooked.
They do play with a live band occasionally, usually their final tour show or arena shows. Their music is punk but they have their tender moments too. They've even played live with an orchestra. Check out the songs Orchestra and My Landscape. 2 beautiful orchestra driven songs. The difference between this idol group and others like You'll Melt More and others, is that they have 3/4 amazing singers. Aina the End's husky voice is the best of them all.
    Other alt-idol recommendations:
    Necronomidol,
Guso Drop (dissolved and reunited into a new group),
Burst Girl (... the new group name),
    Broken by the Scream,
    Passcode,
    Yanakoto Sotto Mute,
    There There There's,
    Melon Batakke a GoGo,
just to name a few. Great reaction.

I started watching your channel for the Band-Maid reactions but it's been great watching you slowly slide down the alternative and underground idol rabbit hole. I grew up on punk, metal and industrial bands and never in a million years thought I would love any group without a musician in the lineup, but now I fly to Japan once a year to see dozens of hardcore idol units. Some of the most exciting music in the world right now is coming out of Japan's alternative rock and idol scenes. Here's a few more to check out:
NECRONOMIDOL (Darkwave & Black Metal): “TUPILAQ” or “ITHAQUA” or “STRANGE AEONS”
Minna no Kodomochan (Digital Hardcore + Doom Metal): “I Wish I'd Be Dead When I Wake Up” or “The Walls”
NECROMA and Kodomochan also subtitle their MVs in English which is nice.
Yukueshirezutsurezure aka Not Secured, Loose Ends (Postpunk, digital hardcore & Metal Core): “Wish/” or "Paradise Lost"
BURST GIRL (straight-up punk): “GREAT FXXKING MY WORLD”
    KAQRIYOTERROR (EDM and Metalcore): “lilithpride”
Yankoto Sotto Mute (Postpunk & Grunge): “Stain” or “レイライン” (Layline)
14th Generation Toilet Hanako-San (Grindcore): “akatsuki”
(I think my original comment may have been blocked because I included links so I redid it. Anyway, enjoy!)

Solid recommendations there. I second the suggestions of BURST GIRL, NECRONOMIDOL, and Minna no Kodomo-chan. The latter's debut was my personal favourite album of 2018, beating Band-Maid's excellent World Domination into second place. Japan's music scene is indeed bursting with creativity, talent, excitement and fun.

Hands down my absolute favourite band/group/musicians in the entire world. Somewhat obsessive over BiSH. They're part of the Japanese Alt-Idol scene, they were a successor somewhat of a band called BiS, with both bands being from the label WACK, who have, I think, a total of 5 bands signed atm. You should've done the music video for this as its amazing, all of their videos are.
I can listen to them for heavy, punky, pop, Jpop, emotion, the works. Their catalogue covers almost every type of music I can imagine, and you should definitely check out more.
    Giant Killers
    Stereo Future
    Smack Baby Smack
    Non Tie Up
    Distance
    Hontou Honki
    遂に死
All great songs/great videos, without getting into the more pop music/emotional songs.
I love you guys for reaction to the more niche/unknown world of alt-idol bands, nowhere else online is offering me this sort of content, thanks!

WACK currently have: BiS (or at least a training unit), BiSH, EMPiRE, GANG PARADE (currently split into PARADiSES and GO TO THE BEDS), CARRY LOOSE, MAMESHiBA NO TAiGUN and WAgg. There have been a few collaborations with other artists and solo releases, notably AYUNi D's band PEDRO. Add in two shuffle units SAiNT SEX and HOLY SHiTS, plus BEAT MINTS BOYS. I'm assuming BULLY IDOL are finished as BILLY IDLE, the group they parody, seems to have ended. I count that as eight currently active but its really hard to keep up.

    • @omegashinra7672
      @omegashinra7672 4 года назад

@@FourBleats Oh yeah I actually forgot about Carry Loose, which I'm surprised by because Pan Luna is one of my favourite WACK Idols. I wouldn't really count Saint Sex or Holy Shits as they're just supergroups almost, made from already signed members, though I didn't realise it was quite so many groups at this point haha. I wouldn't count Chitiii or Aina's solo tracks as they're just members of BiSH, but Pedro definitely counts to me as it's Ayuni plus new talent in the band with her.
Great label, as much as Watanabe annoys me sometimes, and some really great talent too.

  • @ClawCarver
    @ClawCarver 4 года назад +1

Idol groups doing music that you wouldn't expect from idol groups (and acting in ways you wouldn't expect idols to act) is the essence of the alternative idol scene. BiSH is the biggest group in that scene. Their latest mini-album LETTERS is Number 1 in the Japanese (Oricon) album chart right now. They can sell out arena-sized venues. They're also rarely off Japanese TV: adverts, chat shows, music programmes, documentaries where they sail aboard fishing trawlers, etc. Their success is due to many factors, but what made them stand out when I first heard them was their badass, take-no-prisoners attitude and the fact that the members have distinctive personalities and voices (Aina sounds husky, Chittiii sweet, Ayuni has a nasal John Lydon-esque sneer, Momoko is low, Atsuko sounds like woodwind, LingLing is high and head-voice-y and can scream like a banshee) so you always know who's singing even if you can't see them.
They have more interesting songs than this one, in my view, so I'll throw some recommendations in your general direction:
SMACK baby SMACK (official video) - the best introduction to BiSH in my opinion.
GiANT KiLLERS (live, BRiNG iCiNG SHiT HORSE, etc.) - arena show with pyrotechnics and circle pits.
Am I FRENZY?? (live, NEVERMiND tour final) - in which LingLing, on her birthday, hits notes previously unknown to music theory.
NON TIE-UP (official video) - a cinematic science fiction prog-pop spectacle.

OK, not much for a musician to dissect in MONSTERS - it's a simple high-octane punk track. I think you got the take away though - melody, energy, catchy, odd that they do this kind of performance with a rock backing but without a band. I assume the lack of a live band is a cost thing but like BABYMETAL they are moving towards shows with a live backing band. If you do more live stuff, try versions from the BRiNG iCiNG SHiT HORSE TOUR FiNAL "THE NUDE" (yes, really) which was in a large hall with a backing band, string section, pyro, light show, etc.
The video for MONSTERS is pretty good, assuming you like fireballs, smoke grenades, fake blood and faux violence, all with a comedy twist at the end. As others have noted, they tend to make very good videos that actually enhance the music. If you're up for a double header, I'd recommend the MV for GiANT KiLLERS (it has dialogue that can get in the way of the music) followed by the live version of the same track from "THE NUDE".
Musically they tend to be a little more pop oriented but do have several tracks similar to MONSTERS plus a few that head off into the realm of noise. The live versions of FREEZE DRY THE PASTS (And yet BiSH moves tour) and AM I FRENZY?? (NEVERMiND TOUR FiNAL) are both pretty intense and also have live backing.
Don't be fooled by the cutesy singing an dancing - the lyrics can get quite dark and they can even be rude/crude from time to time - this is another part of the alt/anti idol thing. The crowd aren't really singing along as such, more like chanting in a similar way to a sports crowd.

The management or message of BiS/BiSH has not changed. Here the imperfect and flawed is celebrated even as far as the vocals. They could sing better but they don't on purpose. This idea which is a stable of Japanese culture is dismissed by westerners as being less than perfect whereas the very idea of BiSH is that what is not perfect is something that should be celebrated. I'm kinda deaf, so maybe that explains why I can't hear much of the backing track. Not terribly impressed with the quality of the vocals either, but I'm kinda spoiled by bands that sound just as good live as they do in studio. Blame Sabaton and Band Maid.

Yeah the backing tracks were alittle low on this one.
