The Husbands of River Song
"Not one line. Don't you dare." That gets me every single time.
"You watch us run."
And it's echoed when River is forced to shoot the Doctor at Lake Silencio. When she's struggling with the suit she says "Time can be rewritten!" and the Doctor replies "Don't you dare."
I'm pretty sure a lot of this conversation between Ten and River gets echoed all throughout Ten, Eleven and Twelve's run.
"You and me, time and space"
@@IsilmeTuruphant And when 11 regenerates he says "I will not forget one line of this, not one day I swear"
Tears.
River Song was the best thing to come out of the Moffat era.
+Walrus is in the Matrix That says alot!
+Walrus is in the Matrix She started in the Davies era, but Moffat kept her going and growing.
+kbw13 Yes, she started in RTD's era but she was a creation of Moffat's as he wrote the library episodes.
+Walrus is in the Matrix Yeah and she came before he took over the show moffett wrote the episodes I think both of them. I'm glad when he took over he continued with the story
+waycomp2002 Yea but she was created by Moffat as he wrote those episodes, and I believe at the time, Moffat an RTD already knew Moffat was gonna take over.
Anyone else kinda disturbed how Alex hasn't aged a freaking inch in these videos
The only thing that has happened to her is she has Gorton more awesome
Have you seen season 1 of Arrow? she ages two-fold
Doctor Who Actors are granted eternal youth until their purpose has been fulfilled. I mean look at Paul McGann.
@@cameronjosephvideos5942 so true lmao
She has an augmented lifespan.
Great job, it's just occurred to me that River's statement that if Ten died at the Library then she would never meet him is actually much more complicated than we first realised. If the Doctor dies as Ten, then he never meets Amy. Amy never gets together with Rory since it was Mels/River that made them realise their feelings towards one another. River is never born so Ten dies at the Library. This was inevitable.
+MeBeMat And even if Amy and Rory got together and had a child, it would not have been conceived in TARDIS, so it would not have time lord powers.
River sent the Doctor a message on the psychic paper, though, telling him to meet her at the library... So really, if 10 had died there and not River, I'd assume it would result in a paradox. We know that if he had died there, that would mean River would never meet him. That would also mean that Amy and Rory would never meet him and that Amy would never have given birth to River as we know her today. If River never met the Doctor then she wouldn't send a message to him on the psychic paper telling him to meet her there, ergo, he might not go there, which could result in a paradox
+Connor Fleming with that i think its slight case of events not happening and just slint a new world, but still paradox
+MeBeMat The ultimate "fixed point"
Yes, she actually has no other choice but to sacrifice herself to save him.
For me, the saddest part isn't that she died - it was that when she did he didn't know her so he couldn't be properly upset by it... which is why Twelve cried at Darillium because by then he knew her very well. It's weird how Eleven actually didn't really have many sad encounters with her (except perhaps with her ghost) whereas Ten and Twelve's single encounter with her were really sad (Twelve a bit more bittersweet but still)
I do wish Ten and Twelve had a bit more screentime with River Song outside of their singular episodes. I guess for Ten Moffat introduced her quite late into his run and for Twelve Moffat was kind of doing his weird Clara thing with Doctor Who so Eleven got most of the River Song love.
but still, ten was ready to die in her place in this scene, only because she knew his name
12 had 24 years off screen with her tho.. So I guess that's something?
Her time with 11 was the most happy and neutral in my opinion.
@@BrickBreakerXX I'm tempted to think that Moffat tried to make it so that it would be during 11's run that it would be the last moment with River. Unless Moffat thought it would be better for River to turn up past 11 but not close the loop until much much later.
"river you know my name..."
that is so awesome. even for how old those words are it still holds up.
It took 6 years for the resolution of this story arc, but what a ride! Thank you, Mr. Moffat.
When you watch this first the first time, you feel sorta sad but since you just knew her for a moment there isn't much connection. Then you watch the rest of the seasons and you come back and watch this again, and your heart hurts so much more. Brilliant way to do it. Because the series it makes you come back and re-watch this and then this episodes holds so much more meaning.
I teared up the first time I ever saw this because I fell in love with River Song.
And after watching this wonderful edit made it even worse!! I am still choked up from watching this!!!
Just wow!!!
People think of time like a line, or a stream, but it's really more of a blob of wibbledy-wobbledy, timey-wimey...stuff.
Twin towers of Delirium, they had one night on Delirium...and one night on Delirium lasts 24 years. :) Epic Romance.
*Darillium
chocol8milk 23 years i Think
Is that like "I got drunk for a month one night?"
with two psychopaths and that much time on a honeymoon... Oh boy!
This makes the prescient dialogue from 2008 even more poignant. And it really does enforce the idea of "same software/different case" about the regenerations. (A special tip of the acting hat to Alex Kingston, who takes performances seven years apart and makes them appear as if she'd done them one right after another. And the fact that the death scene was the one she filmed FIRST makes her instinctive understanding of the character even more notable.)
Very rewarding how you can go back and watch something from a while ago and it will mean many new things now.
+Luke Foord THAT is what is totally amazing about River's story! Each time you see her - it ads yet another layer to this fantastic scene.
+Luke Foord I just wish there had been some handcuffs in the Christmas episode. "You, me, handcuffs - must it always end this way?"
the 50th anniversary episode gave me a new respect for Eccelston. He was the fresh-out-of-war Doctor, so he was a bit troubled by recent events to say the least
It's mind boggling to think that before river died she told Ten that the last time they met was at the singing towers, and he gave her his screwdriver and he cried because he knew the next time she meets him would be at the library where she would die. But the only reason that Twelve knew it was time for him to give her his screwdriver and her time to go, was because as he reached the singing towers he remembered the conversation that took place before her death at the library. So river telling the doctor that he knew she was going to die was the reason he knew at the singing towers, that she was going to die, hence he cried
Who composed Beethoven's 5th?
SILENCE in the Library
“'And silence would fall.' All those times I heard those words, I never realized it was my silence. My death."
I know you posted this 5 months ago but "Silence will fall when the question is asked" doesn't mean the question is *what* is the doctor's name but *how* does she know his name
I only just realised that and its amazing
@@pikachuisshook2795 That's a really cool way to think about it
@@pikachuisshook2795 " River you know my name... You whispered my name in my ear. There's only one reason as to why I would tell anyone my name... "
For me it really implied he realised he knew she would die permanently or at least she had to die at that moment.
In Season 06, The Doctor said to Winston Churchill what would he do if there was someone who had a secret, that was never meant to be told, how do you keep the secret from being revealed and he says " Well... if I had to... I would certainly destroy that man. "
The Doctor knew his real name is a secret that must never be told.
He knew she would die, because he would never tell his name without being careful about it.
At least that's how I see it.
@@ARMarTy_ timelords only reveal their true names on their wedding day.
@@lokishinigami " Look into my eye "
What a night that was... 24 years in fact!
I think those with regenerative abilities age slower than most humans. Amy saw the 11th Doctor when he was 300 years older and he looked the same, it was only after around 900-1000 years on Trenzalore that he looked older. It's the same reason that suggests that the War Doctor must have been in the time war for many years, as when he does his "Doctor no more" regeneration, he looks quite young, but when we see him later, he has aged considerably, and even regenerates simply due to "wearing a bit thin".
this is one of the saddest scenes in Doctor Who ever, and we didn't even know at that time
Everybody knows that everybody dies, and nobody knows it like The Doctor, but I do think that all the skys of all the worlds might just turn dark if he ever, for one moment, *_accepts it._* Everybody knows that everybody dies, but not every day. _not today!!!_
I genuinely think this could be one of the best moments from that series. It shows the power of a time travel series. It’s sadder six years later
"If you die here, it'll mean I never met you." "Time can be rewritten." "Not those times. Not one line. Don't you dare." Omg, I lose it every time. I KNEW we would see her again. I cried for her death in this episode & I barely knew her, but I KNEW she would be important. The fact that even though she was dying, she loved him so damn much that she didn't want their time spent together to be erased. Omg. "You watch us run." Dying for the man you love so damn dearly....and he has no freakin' clue who you are. I can't even imagine the heartbreak of that moment.
I love how for River, new regeneration just equals new haircut :D
+Luc Flidru
i like the idea that she can see right through him, just by the look in his eyes
the idea that to her, he's always the same man, whereas we call him Doctor 10, Doctor 11 and so on
she just knows him to be THE Doctor (only one)
just a nice thought
Buchanan Games Except in the special it took her quite a while to recognize him.
Only after, when she recounted the adventures, she made it sound so basic.
Luc Flidru i'm sorry, i wouldn't know
i sorta stopped watching once Amy and Rory left
but i was just going off what only i knew, nothing more, nothing less
anything with Peter C. is something i know nothing about
+Luc Flidru actually the reason she didnt recognize him was because they were finally on the same time line. to the point where the last face she saw was 11s. so it was a very touching moment when she finally realized what was goin on
+Buchanan Games Then you've missed some amazing stuff. It's a shame to be so stuck on a single character or characters that you walk away from the story itself, the very essence of what Doctor Who is.
In my opinion, at the end of Hell Bent, they should've done the screwdriver differently. In the midst of all the triumphant music, the TARDIS spits out a new screwdriver, and it's River's. Then the music changes and The Doctor just stares in shock, knowing what must come soon. After all, River does say "you gave me _your_ screwdriver." Not "a" screwdriver, HIS.
+DoctorWhoFanBadWolf Yes, well, he designed it to look similar to 10's- like an upgraded version.
Ahh, but that would assume they put some forethought into the story and actually planned it out. Honestly I would prefer your version, but Moffat does what Moffat wants to do and we can't help it.
+cwooddirector, if you don't realize just how much thought was required to tell a story as complex as River's, I can't help you. I think we can all forgive a small slip up like this. It's not important whose screwdriver it is, but rather who it came from.
That would of been so much better
+DoctorWhoFanBadWolf Totally agree, and I thought the same. Would have been very foreboding for us proper Who nerds! :D
I think River is one of the most genius stories ever thought up. Beginning her story with her death.
The way Moffat did her story arc in reverse is amazing! That’s Moffat for ya! Best writer ever!
The backwards story of River Song was pure genius. No matter how much people criticise Steven Moffat for some of his stories, but he was brilliant in creating these unforgettable moments.
I still love the fact that it was only because 10 saw river die, caused him to plan ahead, the point where he prepared her mind for this episode, which then lead to river finding out she would die, basicly looping in place. I love time travel.
Perfectly done. Thanks for showing how it all dovetails. (PS -- don't care what anyone says, Moffat's a genius! )
+Deathrock9 you forgot part series 5
+pleonic what anyone says? O.o who said otherwise about moffat? i;ve never heard negativity on his writing but it might be me, i tend to disregard any negativity anyway xD
I agree about the season 7 and series 6 part, actually. Clara's whole "born to save the doctor" thing was ridiculous
+Claire Dé Lune Yeah, there are a significant number that feel like Deathrock. Personally, I like most episodes he's written and have enjoyed his whole term as showrunner (which is where you get a lot more criticism of Moffat).
+pleonic great completing the ciricle between the Library and the 2015 Christmas episode, so great to check back now on the lines "arguing like an old married couple", she knew his name, talking about the singing towers, the screwdriver, yes the Doctor knows how she is to die the entire timeline
a few minutes later: "Stay with me! You can do this, stay with me! You and me, one last run!"
*One Melody "River Song" Pond, "saved"*
"that man... that impossible man... he just can't give in!"
I love River so much. And Kingston is so good hear. So much emotion. Her first time playing a character who has already had all these great adventures that we have yet to see. So good.
for some reason the screen has gone blurry 😢 there must be something in my eye. ..
brilliant video xx

River & the Doctor
*Never Forget*
“Not those times. Not one line, don’t you dare.” The moments with him were so perfect, so incredible that nothing can be close to the memories she had. Not a single moment should be replaced. The story of River Song is a beautiful one.
Thanks, I didn't know I could still cry 70% of my body mass.
And the timeline is complete...
+Spud620 Jim the Fish
+Jeff Power it's so tragic but so beautiful. I'll miss her
THE HEART CANNOT MAINTAIN
IM GOING
+Spud620 She can still be returned, The Doctor will bring her back, he can't live his life feeling in debt to someone. All he needs to do is find a way to get some regeneration back into her.
+Spud620 Easter Island
Wow. You took a sad moment and made it even more heartbreaking. Satan would be proud.
I asume we won't see much of these 24 years the doctor and river will spent together on darilium but i hope they'll talk or mention it at the start of series 10.I mean, spending 24 whole years with his wife in peace might have a very positive and possibly curing influence on him, considering what he's recently been through.
+Kyubi095 And for her as well! She deserves a bit of happiness with her man. I hope we do get to see a bit of it.
+Cryer24597 When he has reason to, I think he finds a way to manage :) aka a town called Christmas!
+Cryer24597 Makes sense, that was my first thought to that episode as well. He did make an awful lot of upgrades and toys for the town though :) My question is, where did River and the Doctor sleep?
+Cryer24597 Ohhh. Of course!
"Spent our last night together" - that's what RIver says the stories say. Which means yes, a SINGLE NIGHT is 24 Earth years. The same way a full day cycle on Venus is 8 months, or a full day cycle on Jupiter is just under 10 hours. Night simply indicates that the star which the planet orbits does not show up above the horizon during that period of time - meaning, of course, that as it is rotating, more or less the same portion of the planet is facing the star during that time as well. It also means the sunrises and sunsets would be EXTREMELY long - possibly longer than an Earth year. I'm just gonna stop here because I could get into the astrophysics of it all and that would be very tedious.
TL;DR Years are subjective. RIver and the Doctor spent their last 24 Earth years together. That's why she was so happy.
IT'S OKAY I DIDN'T NEED MY HEART IN ONE PIECE THAT'S FINE I'LL BE FINE.
As someone who's never seen an episode since Tennant left, this "enhanced" version is really really cool.
A brilliant video (as always!) I love this more than I can say (even if does break both my hearts...)
And congratulations on being mentioned in radiotimes! You definitely deserve it! :D
Thank you! Still can't believe it! 😂
When David Tennant,Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi are in one episode or clip it makes me want to watch every episode of those three doctors
Absolutely love this! I was thinking of something like this, my dream has now become reality! They should release a version of this episode with this added in, Great Work! :D
God Dammit!!
This is one of the only times I have EVER cried during a Doctor Who episode
And then you have to make this fantastic edit and made me tear up again -- even worse than before.
"there is nothing you can do" thats the hardest thing for the doctor to ever accept.
This is why I love the show. This has been 6 years in the making :(
"There is only one reason I would ever tell someone my name. There is only one time I could" - 10th Doctor. Not that he knew she was his wife, but he understood that there was something unique between then that she has known and he is about to, but it kills him that this is it for him and her and it barely even started.
"I've had a new haircut; this is my best suit!"
"That's not even a suit."
A Few moments later...
"Now that, my dear, IS a suit!"
I met her at comic con yesterday. She is such an amazing woman.
I got into the show through 11's era, randomly channel flipped to the eleventh hour as a kid and fell in love. Well after his first 2 seasons had finished I went back and watched the rest having set my dvr to always record doctor who checking the episode numbers to see what order to watch. I bawled when I reached this scene having already fallen in love with river. I still cry when I think about her and the doctors story.
Man, I will never forget the Christmas Eve show where the Doctor mentioned they were going to the planet of the singing towers. I burst into tears. My poor friend hadn't seen the Library show so she had no clue. I couldn't stop crying. As usual.
That episode is so much more heart breaking once you've seen their entire story.
Was just watching the original Silence in the library clip when I saw this, amazing job!!
Awesome!
Only gripe is that for River, `The Name of the Doctor` occurs AFTER this episode but other than that fantastic!
love this! perfect! can i hate u too.. i thought i wouldn't cry no more.. turns im still am even after watching it on Christmas day. but keep the awesome job
when I watched this for the first time without knowing what to come and what was going on and what she meant, I couldn't help but felt so sad yet I didn't even know why I felt that way
are you trying to kill me of feels?????????
Really well done. Thanks for putting it all together. It makes the scene in the library even more heartbreaking. Congrats on the mention in Radio Times.
0:47 "Not one line." Eeeeeey.
Thank you for this vid
Oh sure, just make me cry. You gotta love how much more tragic and perfect this scene gets as you watch them run. Best companion.
She is supposed to be 24 years older than the last time we see her with 13. She can't regenerate anymore be she sure does age well!
No, Capaldi dumped her at one in the morning and ran off in his TARDIS. So, technically she only aged a year.
Peter D not true they spent 24 years together 😂
Yeah pretty sure she’s suppose to age unless it’s different with time lords, even half time lords, because I’m pretty sure they have different or unusual genes. Meaning youth lasts longer
@@lucybeswick7219 i just meant in terms of story this is her at her oldest and in real life its her at her youngest on the show but when we see her with 13 she looks much older because she is in real life much older. Not to say she doesn't look great!
Velldog I get you 😁
Wonderful!!And for those who wonder when he gave her his name- there is such a thing as pillow talk. Does anyone actually think River would love and marry a man without consummating the marraige and knowing his name?? Not our River!!
I think the Doctor told River his name after she poisoned him in "Lets Kill Hitler". He whispers to her to tell River something and then she says "I'm sure she (River) knows".
When the Doctor says "There's only one reason I would tell anyone my name-there's only one time I could" he's referring to a situation where he's dying. Just my theory!
+DarkPriestess1 Absolutely agree. He couldn't tell anyone unless he was dying with no chance of regeneration.
Yeah but why the heck would he? It just makes no sense when you think about it
@@TheMagicDragonHD because that doctor knew this would happen in the library, so he knew in some moment in time he would have to tell River his name, and in kill hitler he saw mels regenerate into the river he met in the library, so for all he knew he was dying and she needed to know his name to avoid a paradox
thanks for making me cry... perfect video 😭 ....river and the doctor ... time and space...thank you for this amazing video
Was this video make just to make me cry?
Because mission accomplished, bruv
Great Video !! Awesome.
However at 1:04. That bit shouldn't be there. It is from "The Name of the Doctor" whose events occur after this in both River and the Doctor's timelines.
Otherwise, perfect video.
+Thomas McDonald Nops. We are not looking at this video from 12's perspective.
That bit is in the future for 10 and "this" River.
LiveYourLife technically it counts. The Doctor and River keeps bumping into each other in their timeline. But in the wrong order
Siddharth Bhansali Actually it's Rivers past and the Tenth Doctor's future.
numpteez because that clip happens after her death in the library. How could she remember something that hasn't happened yet?
I really don't care if that scene from "Name of the Doctor" is in the video; but everyone needs to know that the scene from "Name of the Doctor" takes place after the library.
But I haven't even had my permission slip for this feels trips signed yet...
How?! How?! How have you so cleanly done those flashbacks?! That was effortless, truly effortless!
I stopped watching after matt regenerated and I'm only catching back up on this now.
I can't believe they continued this story what great writing.
Alex Kingston sold the heck out of this "knowing it all, knowing how it ends and how much pain there will be, I wouldn't change ONE day"
That was definitely a better version especially with the flashbacks.
After the Christmas special I had pictured this mashup… You brought it to life! Thank you.
WHY DOES IT HURT EVEN MORE WITHOUT THOSE EXTRA LITTLE CLIPS?!???! ARGH, MOFFAT!!!!!!!!!!
I wondered if they would ever show that and when the 12th doctor came along I figured that was it for River, you know? Glad they finally showed it.
Ohhhhh hey.... Look there... My heart is on the floor after being ripped out!
The “you and me… time and space… you WATCH us run” absolutely breaks me every time I hear it UUUUGGH
I wasn't sure what to make of River at the start, but all said and done, this might be the best, most original and brilliant thing the show has done
I honestly cried abit at this years christmas special
Moffat has been planning this for a long time...
Beautiful and well-done. Thank you!
It's been 5 years and this video STILL gets me.
It is very intriguing, introducing the audience to the character at (or near) the end of her storyline, with all intentions of seeing her again at different parts of her life.
Absolutely fabulous... And you made me cry... It was perfect in every way. Thank you! 😭❤️
The regeneration of 10 to 11 I think was heavily influenced by this event. 10 would've been unable to handle the guilt of what he knew was going to happen with River. Between that and what he had to do with Donna, 10 couldn't take it and snapped and became the Time Lord victorious. 11 was the one who runs....The one who forgets. He couldn't stay still not because he was bored, but because he carried around so much guilt....The little boy thing was just an act. 11 was far darker than most realize.
OH BRILLIANT!!! This should be the new SPOILERS Edition of "Forest of the Dead", while the original be the SPOILER FREE version for anyone new to Doctor Who.
why is this is my recommended it’s the second time I’ve seen this scene today I’m gonna go cry bye
awsome! i cried! and i was amazed with the end of the christmas special, and cried when i realized how river's story had come full circle. i've always loved alex kingston, from back in the ER days. I loved her as river!
Great work. Very interesting watching all these clips alongside each other.
Thank you for putting in the future clips. It added another layer to the scene.
It was devo watching this scene at the time but now .... when everything else has happened ..... Its too much. I'm not crying .... you are!!!!
thank you for making this. seeing what she saw, makes it sadder, but it also tells us, she was happy, and soon, the doctor will be too. if for a little while
I have probably seen this scene 20 times and I cry every freaking time.
I'M NOT CRYING YOU'RE CRYING. Damnit.
Does anyone find it more sad that 10 save her but only to plug her into the library and for her to stay there for thousands of years waiting for 11 to say goodbye to her.
Given the fact that David Tennant had no idea what giving someone his name meant, he turns in a fantastic performance and really sells it to you that something big is happening.
still crying every time when I see this after all these years....
Literally gut me with a spork this breaks me every time
Sadness abound... I cried with the 10th, 11th and now the 12th..
The flashbacks makes this scene more "epic"
Watching this was beautiful, sweet agony! I'm crying and I can't stop! Well done!
After Seeing the Christmas Episode I had hubby watch that episode and feels hit him. After that I told him "Welcome to the fandom".
No one cared when she died the first time...and now we bawl!
Very good! This really makes things SUPER touching.
Although technically, the Name of the Doctor scene is a flash forward for River, so...
;)
Beautifully done. Thank you.
*cries again*
