Terrific! Only been in a ‘proper’ lorry once when I hitch-hiked a ride as a student. Love seeing these older trucks it reminds me of being a kid (sat with my mates on a wall) watching them leaving a local stone quarry and getting the drivers to sound their air horns. Simple times.
That smell of unburnt fuel is choking,I used to work on a fleet ERFs fitted with Gardner engine’s,one Christmas we decided to garage them in the warehouse to protect them from freezing conditions. When we returned to work of course all the air tanks had drained locking the brakes on,starting 20 Gardner tractor units all at once with drained air tanks was a Nightmare, the fumes were choking us it was like the November fogs we used to get in those days,we had to go outside and wait for the unloader valves to blow off and then dash in and drive them out ASAP. That warehouse wreaked for weeks of the fumes from those engines,we Never made that mistake again no matter how bad the weather was.
When a Gardner got tired at around 1/2 a million miles they would drip neat diesel out of the exhaust on a frosty morning , took them a few minutes to start firing on all cylinders .
No. The silencer was full of old oil etc after being sat around for 20 years. It completed the best part of 200 miles on Sunday on the Cheshire Run with no visible smoke. As the title says, this was the first run on the road in 20 years.
@@cabacs8062 Ta for prompt reply. I guess that the oil and soot goes in the silencer when the engine is cold, then burns off in normal use? . Either way, Gardners are better for the environment than the present-day rubbish- more fuel efficient, and don't need to be thrown away when the computer/EGR valve/ADblue carburettor/whatever wears out. Good work on the restoration/preservation of the vehicle
@@charliecroker7005 Quite so! Engines like the Gardners are not helping to rip off people like modern engines, lorries, cars and... do. Therefore all those are banned.
I agree. I am hoping to do a drive a long video. Just need someone to help, drive or do the camera. We shifted a low loader trailer with her the other week and she sounded brilliant pulling up the A623 out of Peak Forest onto Tideswell Moor., 2nd direct all the way. Unfortunately only two of us and he was following in a van, so we didn't capture it.
@@cabacs8062 I'd be delighted to be of assistance, I have got two classic lorries with unsynchronized 12 speed ZF-boxes. But since I'm living in Germany it could be a wee bit complicated. I know the Gardner engines from the French lorry brands Bernard, Latil and Panhard. For the next year I'm planning to go to the UK by lorry to join the Trans Pennine Run, if that blasted Covid will be gone. At 5:24 it's my ÖAF tipper, a mate of mine and I'm behind the wheel. ruclips.net/video/a0sKBIP45RY/видео.html Cheers!
Poor greta will be crying in her humus, more of these please.
My ERF C series B reg Gardner 230 covered Weldrake in smoke on its first run in 12 years on its trip to Leeds on trade plates.

Would love to see a cab ride video in that unit. It sounds awesome
Plan to do an in cab video when we get out on one of this years runs, so hopefully will be on the channel in the not too distant future.
I just love the Gardner mist.👍

Gardner will smoke until it gets up to temperature and it takes a while running light . Also it will smoke a bit after it has been on overrun .
Great old truck 👍
Drove one in the seventies it smoked that all the time, great memories though.
Fantastic
Still chucking out clouds of white clag after 6 minutes of driving. Surely the pump and/or engine needs reconditioning?

Where is this drive?
Its heading South out of Buxton to Hillhead,
I've had land rovers stood 20 mins smoke more than that 😆 🤣
I can believe that mate. I just think you did well to get the Land Rover to start in the first place.🚙😁
I'd like to hear the Gardner's lovely voice, rather than this rattle!
