- A massive fire engulfed a two-story apartment building in the Koreatown neighborhood of Los Angeles on Friday night. Firefighters responded to the building located on the 115 block of South Catalina Street at around 4:50 p.m.
Arriving crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the upper-story windows. At least one person was seen running from the building with their belongings while neighbors exited nearby homes for safety.

This is one of my fears, losing everything because someone else started a fire in their apartment.
retner's insurance

The second floor windows were boarded up.
It's 2024 buddy, "everything should be in the cloud"
@@The_Quaalude lol
This is why security bars over windows scare me. If this fire was on the first floor, no one would be able to escape through any of the windows. Hope all are ok.
Mine are locked up on the 1st floor and I'm terrified this happening to us. We have 2 quick release windows for 2 windows but still worrying if you're caught off guard or are trapped in the wrong room
Just so you know...
California Code of Regulations, Title 24
Chapter 12-3 Releasing Systems for Security Bars in Dwellings:
12-3-1.1
"These requirements cover releasing systems for bars, grilles, mesh, glazing or other items intended to provide security at doors and windows required for emergency escape from dwelling units. When actuated by the occupant, the system allows the obstructions over the door or window to be moved so occupants can escape in the event of an emergency."
If you are considering moving into an apartment, and the windows have bars, make sure they can be released in an emergency. If they can't then the building might not meet code (and it's possible that might not be the only code violation).
It could be a bad part of town. I remember living in a house where we had security windows like those and metal gates in the front and back door in Southern California when I was a kid and down the street was a drug den. This could be the bad side of Korean town?
@BiAxialSphere00 Everywhere is the bad side of LA lately lmao. This city quickly going to hell
@@TWAAAAACKS yeah that's sad but true 🥺
I hate to see that poor people.
Clearly the attic space has no firewalls. That’s why the smoke goes all the way to the other side of the structure.
Dude its arson. Otherwise only 1 would be engulfed early in the fire.
Or an apartment door is open on the right side of the building and on the left side. The smoke spread through the hallway. This is a far more likely scenario.
Also, that building has no attic.
It looked like there was an attic space because smoke was coming from some kind of vents. But, you could br right. Arson.
@@fakenews3792
You are making yourself look foolish
@@fakenews3792 Only one top floor unit was on fire, the rest of the smoke was venting out of the attic only.
This is my neighbors. I posted it on tiktok too... Absolutely nuts... Thankfully everyone is ok... Hopefully they find their cat 😨😱😫
When I got home from work, I didn't see any sign of a fire. One minute in the house and I hear the fire trucks! They were on it fast!! Thank you to our fire department!!
Hope the cat 🐈⬛ is safe
@@SirenASMR_ the first thing I panicked about was the thought of them having pets... Hopefully Lolita is found! 🐈⬛ She is a ashy gray cat with yellow eyes.
Sad...what a way to start the New Year..
Thank You to LA FD!! Brave folks.. hope all are safe❤❤❤❤❤
Great job - kudos to the eagle eye of your pilot. Hope all are safe. Thanks for the amazing footage.
Every comment section on RUclips, is a reminder of how much people suck.
You're not wrong.
According to radio traffic they had the fire under control ~10 min after 1st units arrival and stop loss declared ~15 min after arrival
Fire damage was contained to one unit and smoke damage contained to the three adjacent units
You acting like u know when ur name says Virgil! Shut up
According to my eyes!! I saw everything. It's my neighbor. Even the fire department said the attic is vacant. They had the windows boarded up.. they had to smash them out

The firefighters know because they were there, all the radio comms are archived and can be looked up by anyone who wants to listen to them.

@@Samantha_637 what attic windows? from this video there are only first and second story windows and none look boarded up

😢😢😢 be safe all!!
Definitely suspicious since building is a "U" shape and fire on both sides
Except there wasnt fire on both sides...
The fire was contained to one unit
China town 🇨🇳 and Korea town always has fire 🔥

Lose prongs on an electrical cord can spark when plugged into a wall socket thus starting a fire. Check all your powered kitchen items make sure they are good.😊
Someone said it was a electrical short in a rice cooker in the kitchen 😢😢
That's messed up. There's already a housing shortage in Southern California.

Damnn. That’s messed up
more smoke than flames

Sadly when the one person fled he pushed the door open. That feeds oxygen to the fire
Actually, if you look closely, I closed the door behind me.

What are you babbling about?
They had the fire under control ~10 min after 1st units arrival and stop loss declared ~15 min after arrival
Obviously an arson. Both units are engulfed
It was the middle of the day and only one side was on fire.. I think it was electrical but I think they said gas
The second building caught fire too soon@@Samantha_637

There is a connection between both units like thew capital H! The smoke traveled from one side to the other because there were no fire breaks between the units in the attic.

How does a fire like this become so big. You smell smoke, you call 911. Called 911 when my father died. I could hear the truck and engine company coming while I was still on the phone. I guess fire takes a backseat in our US.
It can smell like wood smoke from a fireplace at first, or wood stove, so if the neighborhood has houses with them and it's cold out, it can be confusing at first. Today I saw darkish smoke while out walking the dog. I watched it best I could, but minutes went by and no siren for the VFD, which was almost next to me. Then when I got to the next block, I wasn't seeing it anymore. And never heard a siren for some time. Like an hour later, so likley something else. But seeing dark smoke it got my attention. Maybe someone burning some trash in their fireplace, or something with the factory. I also heard a smoke alarm going off one night at like 1am while walking the dog. I walked over and found the house and saw no smoke period, nothing from the window close to the alarm. I waited a bit just in case, nothing. A total of at least 20 mins watching. If there was a fire, I'd have known in 5 minutes. The unit was vacant obviously, and sometimes the alarms go off for no reason. Had it happen in my house a few times. Have to push the button to stop it.
The smoke will kill you before the fire does. Thank God you won't feel the heat
Amen Amen 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻😥😥

Cool
2:10 This photo shows the ignorance and incompetence of the USA firefighting service.
1. You can see the main fire is in the apartment where the flames are exiting the structure. That is an access point to burning material. Throughout the attic area, they have no access at all.
2. In the time they have taken to set up ladder to the roof as well as the ladder truck to perform the incredibly ridiculous tactic of Vertical Venting, that apartment fire should have already been extinguished from an exterior application of water through those windows.
3. Notice to the far left, gasses are VENTING out of attic VENTS already. The ONLY thing Vertical Venting will accomplish is, waste time and manpower, put the firefighters at an unnecessary risk and allow the attic gasses to move and mix with fresh air and ignite which instantly changes this from a contents fire into a structural fire.
4. Firefighters on that flat roof would be standing above an attic that is fully involved with flame. That really isn't very smart and should be easily recognized as an unnecessary threat.
5. The very first thing they should have done is pull a 2-1/2" line down the alley to those windows and pump tank water into one of the windows. The other window would continue to act as the Pressure Release Location where all the gasses including water vapor would escape directly out of the structure instead of being drawn further into the structure with Vertical Venting.
6. Now this is very simple to understand. With the main heat producing fire knocked down in that apartment, the temperature on that top floor drops dramatically as the heat and gasses continue out of the vents and windows. The gasses in the attic also start cooling well below their Flash or Ignition Point!
While that Fire Fighting is going on, hoses are being pulled to the top floor. One goes to that apartment to Mop Up while other hoses are ready to cool the attic gasses and search for extension of combustion through the top floor. Small holes are cut in the ceiling and a fog of water is sprayed into the attic to further cool the gasses.
In this process, victims and entering firefighters are protected by the elimination of combustion. Additional windows can be opened throughout the top floor once the flames are eliminated, and the adjacent material is wet down to prevent reignition.
2:50 You can see that water is being applied to the fire from the inside. That not only took an enormous amount of time to accomplish, the firefighters did it while standing IN the fire area where they would be exposed to tremendous heat but also bathed in a cloud of very hot steam. They could have easily been surrounded by the ignition of all the gasses that have spread through the structure.
3:25 That didn't seem to accomplish anything because the firefighters would have been driven back by all that heat and steam. Fighting fires from the inside out defies logic and common sense before you even look at the facts behind it.
They FINALLY get the fire knocked down but how much damage was caused in that time and how many firefighters lives where put unnecessarily at risk? Everyone inside and everyone on the roof. That means, the entire department was exposed to a threat which would have been eliminated by an exterior attack and horizontal venting.
I can't wait to see the childish and useless comment from Virgil.
Nope! Looks like another ignorant child has taken his place. Joe Donovan has joined the long list of fire players to show their inability to spell out step by step how fires should be addressed. The cockloft has numerous vent locations and he thinks the rediculous tactic of Vertcal Venting is the way to go. He also never mentioned putting water through those windows to knock down the main fire location before unnecessarily risking their lives by going inside.
I agree... be it a brush fire or structure fire seems like they grab a chainsaw or a shovel before water... and spraying water over the top of the fire instead of the base of the fire... I've seen comments from firefighters from other countries say the same thing... its like they allow the fire to spread and slow to fight it with water lines.
A volley for sure this guy Is a guy who has never been inside a bldg fire. Don’t believe any of his jibbish he has ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA ON FIRE TATICS.
@joedonovan8470 If only you could have told me where and how I was wrong. Then, you wouldn't sound like this. "You're wrong! You stop it, or I'll tell my Mommy!"
@@JB91710 I always try to help a volley it was not an attic fire it was a top floor fire. A interior attack was certainly justified it only appeared to be two rooms. Also vertical roof ventilation is a must n used by every FD I know, except the volleys. They had water on that fire before they got to the center of the roof no danger at all of any collapse. Every done was done by the book. Radio contact with all involved. Go back to volley school.
I suggest you read my comment again and THINK this time, instead of just reacting.
