Finishing Exotic Woods: 1 Oily Problem
Finishing exotic woods like Pau Ferro, Rosewood and cocobolo can be difficult. Applying a finish the same way you finish alder or maple creates unexpected issues with tackiness and drying.
The oils present in woods like Pau Ferro, Cocobolo, Ziricote, and East Indian Rosewood react poorly with many finishes. As a result, the finish often fails to cures, leaving the wood surface sticky and undesirable. However, tropical exotic woods can be finished well. You just need to take the wood's natural oils into consideration.
Follow these best practices when finishing oily exotic woods:
Avoid using a finish that dries via oxidation. Significantly, shellac and nitro-cellulose lacquer dry on Pau Ferro because they do not rely on oxidation to cure. The aptly name anti-oxidants in Pau Ferro prevent oxidation from occurring. Thus, the finish does not take.
Use a seal coat first. Accordingly, applying a coat of dewaxed shellac will help contain the natural Pau Ferro oils. As a result, subsequent coats of oxidation-based finishes will cure more easily.
Oil-based finishes on Bolivian Rosewood are problematic, even with a seal coat. Therefore, any finish that requires wood penetration will struggle on top of a sealer coat.

Is it bad to give props to Matt Cremona for this video that he had nothing to do with? After all, he does mill lumber, too... If so, let me know in the comments :) While I'm giving out props, big shout out to a few more of my RUclips inspirations: Steve Ramsey of Woodworking for Mere Mortals.

I’ll be honest. I’ve never thought about finishing Pau Ferro before. However, when I do, I will have this video bookmarked,

2019 Mildred Montag Well, not to be critical but maybe if you had put a little more thought into the types of finishes you’re using on your import a tropical words we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Just sayin’ 😂

Remove the natural oils using acetone immediately before applying an oil finish and it will come out gorgeous

Not having done any really exotics I agree with shellac or lacquer. I was taught one can always count on them. Any thoughts on using acetone to remove the exotics' oils before apply the finish ? -Mike

MPart thanks for watching Mike! I know that acetone is effective in removing the oily sap resin that sometimes “leaks” out of Spanish Cedar. My gut tells me acetone could only help. However, that being said, I’ve never tried it.

What is your opinion using a finish on wood like ipe, brazilian teak..The project is making box urn. IPE has an average lifespan of 75 years. Brazilian teak has average lifespan of 50 years. Would a resin coating extend the lifespan? The urn will be placed in the ground. IPE and Brazilian teak are decay and insect resistant.

Thanks for watching. I suspect that finishing a wood like Ipe or teak would do little to extend the life-span significantly. However, I've not worked on a project like that before, either!

Please refrain from attacking Mildred on her choice of wood finishes. Nine more months and her projects will be almost completely dry (probably)
