    Speaking as a person who has been in the jump seat for numerous takeoffs & landings at PBH on Bhutan Air & Druk Airover the past 1.5 decades & with the greatest respect to the talented Bhutan Air Pilots, the approach from the north & then a sharp 180 to land from the south was not an approved landing pathway for many years. Safe, yes but fraught with challenges for the crew during marginal atmospheric conditions in PBH that often occur without warning.. DrukAir pilots are/were directly trained by Airbus 319 trainers typically recommend that pilots only use the straight in Southern approach or the straight in Northern approach when available.

    A nice display of true airmanship on a difficult approach. I did not see any reason why the first attempt was aborted after a perfect approach. The main landing gear was just a foot or so from the runway on what looked like a safe landing was assured. I am a retired airline pilot so I can appreciate the skills these pilots have flying this approach and landing.

      He probably saw that his airspeed was too high to enable stopping before the end of the runway. At an airport like this, it's critical to have the exact airspeed nailed down. The pilot exercised superior judgement.

    Why do you pull wheels up on a "go around"?

    • @tusharsinha94
      @tusharsinha94  3 года назад

      Landing gear increases the drag on the airframe significantly. A go around is treated similar to a takeoff, you need to contact departure frequency and have them route you back to arrivals controller. It's a fairly long process, and you don't want to be dealing with the drag during the climb and on the way back.

    I dont get why did go around the first time? Im not a Pilot, thats clear. Can anyone explain me that?

    • @tusharsinha94

      Tough to tell from here, but could be a windshear at the last moment, or maybe they had crossed the touchdown point. The runway is quite short, so one would not want to take the slightest chance. Never land if in 2 minds!

    What insane telephoto are you using there?!

    • @tusharsinha94
      @tusharsinha94  2 года назад

      It's a Sony Handycam with max optical zoom of 32X. I usually use upto 25-30X, as it's not stable after that in my hand.
      This airport is quite small, so I'll actually not much fast from the closer end of the runway here!

    I don't know what happened with the first approach, it looked beautiful and about to be a perfect landing from the perspective of this video, but who knows what was transpiring in the cockpit.

    24 pilots that means only maximum of 24 airplanes at the same times on the ground ? Not that busy airport ? Then ?? Better 24/ 2 = 12 teams 👩🏾‍✈️ pilotes 👨🏾‍✈️ so 12 airplanes ✈️ only ?? Is that makes any sense ?? Thank you

      Could have been floating too long, crossed the touch down zone, just guessing. It's quite a short strip, so best to go around while you still can!

      I'll check if I can find some info on that. There are a few other airports in Bhutan, but not sure if they can handle A319s.
      Guwahati, India might be a nearby option I guess...

    • @tusharsinha94

      Not crosswind doesn't mean no wind :)
      A sudden head or tail wind are equally problematic, let alone downdrafts. Better safe than sorry!

    The pilot should have tried anyway when they were too high. The co-pilot could have took bets from the passengers on whether they make it or not.
