Thank you for being there to rescue Chu Jai. I'm glad her mahout let you take her. It's very easy for us in the West to condemn the use of elephants in Asia. I totally agree that if they are used then they should be treated humanely. Sadly there are not enough controls in place to ensure that happens. Many of the mahouts are poor and have little to no education. Their animal care is what they have been taught by family and other mahouts. There are many belief systems in Thailand that affect how the 🐘🐘 are treated. For example my friend just rescued an elephant who was made deaf by her owners. They had cut her ear to release evil spirits they believed haunted their village. As a result it damaged her hearing. Only education and cooperation is going to change practices like this. Fortunately there are many mahouts who love their animals and are working in their communities to brIng about change. Covid made the situation worse. Mahouts and their elephants lost their jobs when tourism was shut down. Literally overnight they had no work or income, nor opportunity to find work elsewhere. The Thai government has not stepped up to help. People are afraid to confront the government as it is an offense to criticize the government or royal family. If we want to see 🐘🐘🐘 treated humanely, and certain practices outlawed, we have to support sanctuaries and organizations with political influence. My mahout friend is building his own small sanctuary and education center in Surin. I help support this endeavor with donations. He understands the need for change in Thailand and is doing his part to help 🐘🐘🐘 while at the same time giving future tourists an opportunity to see 🐘🐘🐘 in a natural setting and learn about them.

It always amazes me how two people can be looking at the same situation and seeing completely different things! I understand "owing" and using elephants in Asia has been going on for millennia. And it was mostly for work in forests and agriculture. The "tourist" business is quite a new thing, when you look at the span of time. There were no tourists with deep pockets flooding to Thailand 50-70 years ago. After 60 years of absolute cruelty and exploitation the eles are now on the brink of going extinct over there. Not enough habitat left for them to stay in a wild, not enough protection for them to be save there. I see dirt poor, illiterate, ignorant people "owing" and abusing highly intelligent species. And they should not have rights to them anymore, IF the government and Royals cared enough to put in place ruthless laws protecting them. Only deadly virus, Covid19 changed everything and saved so many of them from slavery! As it is, by the time they are rescued they are maimed, blind, crippled, completely broken creatures. I call them Walking Dead. And some are so so young it is absolutely heart breaking. Whenever I see and hear the "owners" I get so angry I could scream. At the government angry, at the authorities and at the other people letting it all happen. The "owners" can't help it...they do not know any better...they inherited the eles...or bred them.....India is no better...AND they are truly losing their elephants....in some provinces there are no bulls left to repopulate the herds...and if there is one or two left, the gen pool is not healthy enough to keep them healthy and reproducing....In another 50 years the only elephants in Thailand maybe in the Royal stables, in sanctuaries and in forests guarded by soldiers armed to the teeth...there won't be enough of them to be "owned" by ignorant masses who can't afford to feed themselves let alone such precious creatures..... I am looking forward to those days .....Let the mahouts now get off their bums and do some decent, real work without abusing wild, highly endangered creatures.....

Chu Jai's story is so very sad😢....it's shocking how some cruel humans can inflict so much pain and suffering on another living being😟....what possesses them to be so inhumane and who gives them the right to enslave these poor elephants? If Lek was not there to rescue these abused animals i shudder to think what would have become of them

I wish all the animals like Chu Jai must be rescue, they belong to a place that they can walk freely without the chain . Not as they use them for tourist to ride on as part of tourism, I'm not in favor of that. Seeing him walk toward his freedom is a relief. Thank you guys ❤️

To be clear, abusers have made bracelets of ele tail-hair through our life-times, using the tail *hair, not the tail itself. By only using the word "tail," readers might think they cut off the tail to use for jewelry, when it was the tail *hair that the abusers *pulled out, which is painful for the elephant. Yes, elephants truly need their tail-hair, for without it, their denuded tails hit their flesh like whips. That hair is very important for them. I just wanted to be clear for readers to understand.

Who is Dok Geaw's current herd? I have checked the websites and videos to try to learn this, but I couldn't find the answer. Could you please update us on him with a new video? and please tell us who his herd is now, or if he has a nanny, or if he has already joined the bulls. Thank you so much!
Great video! Thank you! Thank you for all you do for the elephants.

The owner/abuser just wanted to get rid of her without any expenses as she isn't profitable anymore. As log as there's no l gislation to the use of theses poor animals this will happen forever. For sure, he will get a young elephant to do exactly the same.
