I think you missed it when he said 'I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man, so is Lola'. That'll be why she nearly crushed him with a hug! Apparently based on a true story of the lead singer
Great seeing you again! As one comment mentioned, Lola's a dude and if you listen to it again, it will make sense. It definitely has great storytelling and The Kinks have an amazing repertoire! Thank you for sharing young man! 😽💋🎶
Rad this song was way ahead of its time, it’s about a transgender or cross dresser and he doesn’t realise it’s a guy until later. Apparently this is based on a true story that happened to the Kinks manager when they were touring and were in Paris in a club.
"It was a real experience in a club," explained Ray. "I was asked to dance by somebody who was a fabulous looking woman. "I said, 'No thank you'. And she went in a cab with my manager straight afterwards. It's based on a personal experience. But not every word."
For our American cousins Soho was an area in London that had a Lot of " gentlemans" clubs, a hostess would sit with you and ask you to buy her a drink that was supposed to be champagne but was normally fizzy water and cost a fortune, we called the club's clip joints.
I heard that this song made quite a splash when it first came out. It definitely isn't what one expected back in the day, I suppose. I do love the song and it was a great leap for the band to come up with this song. 'I'm not the world's most passionate guy' calling out Lola is priceless! It was about a trans who made an impact! It was/is a groundbreaking song! AND, yes, he does say Lola is a man, but oh so sweet Lola!
Good Reaction. This was a story about their Manager in his first week in London. "I met her in a Club down in old SOHO which is the strip joint and slightly sleazy area of London, not Paris or New York, that has been mentioned in the earlier comments.
I won't go over the missed part. Please note that I appreciated your reaction and smile on the honesty of the story telling. I will mention that it was based on a true story associated with the bands travel. Even though the actual geographical location is known, most people like to claim it was in their city.
It's actually a true story about a friend of theirs. It was his first week in the 1970's New York City. it was his first time in a club and a trans male took him home. He left after he found her surprise!!
"I'm glad I'm a man, and so's Lola." Perfect ambiguity. A) He's glad he is a man - proud of his identity. B) Lola is glad he's a man C) Lola is, in fact, a Man. Ray Davies is a genius.
The clues were - dark brown voice, walks like a woman but talks like a man, boys will be girls etc, and finally bet I am a man and so IS Lola - very daring when it came out in 1970 - many people missed the point and still do. The Kinks were not kinky (think this is their only kinky song) but their name hindered their progress in America.
You figured out that they left the bar. I would never have known that if my wife hadn't told me that it has been established that they go all the way, yet I've been listening to the lyrics for thirty-nine years. Most people think, "I walked to the door," means that he goes to leave the bar. I got down on my knees, well...
I fell asleep in a Club near this area and got woken by a Guy @3am but my story is chirpsing this Girl in London 25 years ago and when we went back to her place a few days later, I did wonder why she had a fascination with the back part of me and not the front and then I realized and, like in all the best old Newspaper scoops,I made my excuses and left...:)
thanks, Rad! Kinks are an amazing band - "Lola" was a popular song - with many people not "getting it" lol -- C'mon Rad, really? the end of the song: I'm not the world's most passionate man.. but I know what I am.. I'm a man.. and so was Lola! (the chorus.. boys will be girls and girls will be boys.. it's a mixed-up shook up world... 'cept for Lola... ) Kinks are awesome.. so many other great songs.. I hope you would enjoy "lazing on a sunny afternoon" -- ruclips.net/video/pzSWNEBdsVg/видео.html
Memory by Barbara Streisand is probably the best sung song I've ever heard. Number two, three or four would be the live version of Monday, Monday by the Momas and the Popas (especially Mama Cass). Next to Barbara Streisand, Karen Carpenter was the second best singer, in my opinion. Paul McCartney said something about her being the best singer he has ever heard. Mavis Staples was one of the best female singers. Bob Dylan proposed to her, but she turned him own. She sings with her father and two sisters in a live version of The Weight performed by the Band for the movie The Last Waltz. The Staple Singers I'll Take You There Evergreen by Barbara Streisand is one of the best sung songs I've heard.
I think you missed some hints in the lyrics here.... unfortunately. in every stanza there is a hint about Lola. 1. she spoke with a dark low voice 2. she squeezed me thight she nearly broke my spine 3. she walked like a woman but talked like a man 4. She picked me up and sat me on her knee and at last : I´m glad I´m a man and so is Lola....well that has actually a double meaning "is she glad" or "is she a man" but "C´mon!!!" just put all the hints together.
You missed the most important line, '...Well, I'm not the world's most masculine man, but I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man, and so is Lola..." Lola was living her best life being who she was born to be!
I don't believe it's a gay anthem. It is based on true events that happened to someone close to the band. I personally think it was tastefully done! "YMCA" is definitely a gay anthem!!
@@mercuryangel9223 Not a gay anthem by the Kinks, but definitely a song that the gay community embraces, the same way they embrace and frequently use in their gatherings, Take a Walk on the Wild Side by Lou Reed.
I think you missed it when he said 'I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man, so is Lola'. That'll be why she nearly crushed him with a hug! Apparently based on a true story of the lead singer
Hi Louise.. yeah I think he went with other idea .that Lola was glad he was a man too...
Jarrett..Lola was a man, lol
The story is actually about something that happened to the band's manager that they witnessed.
I definitely missed this one 😩
Jarrett, alot miss it..its a little hard to hear, and can be taken two ways.
I'm not sure if I caught it the first time.lol
No their manager in Paris
Great seeing you again! As one comment mentioned, Lola's a dude and if you listen to it again, it will make sense. It definitely has great storytelling and The Kinks have an amazing repertoire! Thank you for sharing young man! 😽💋🎶
I laughed out loud when you showed recognition of what it was about----it was the earliest yet, so congratulations.

The Kinks are one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time. Listen to them.
Glad your back, missed not seeing you.

You're back!! Yay
❤️🤗🤗
This song was so cool when it first came out.
It was a fun song to sing to.
Everyone would sing, had a great sound
On the same album the anonymous hero wants to make out like an Apeman. Apeman is a very funny follow up single to this one
A lot of people know lola. But they have some other great songs like the death of a clown and come dancing
Lola is a guy! This takes me back and it’s great to hear it again.
Love this song
_"She's a little bigger than he is..."_
in several ways. 😂🤣
"Lola" caused parental heads to explode all over America back in the day. TOO COOL! 😎
Story telling king is Bob Seger, Roll me Away is a perfect place to start
Two other great Kink songs were You Really Got Me Now & All Day & All of the Night.

I can think of 20 , all on their Double Album of Greatest Hits including Waterloo Sunset.
Good Reaction. This was a story about their Manager in his first week in London.

I guess the Coca Cola company didn't want their product name put on the radio, so there is another version where the lyrics say, cherry cola!

Lola is a trans female. Js

Story songs by the Kinks - Waterloo Sunset; Celluloid Heroes; Come Dancing
Nice to see you back. This is a great tune, so many memories #radjarretttheintrovert
🙌🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽❤️
The song is about a young lad who hasn’t been about in the world (naive), getting accosted by a cross dresser..!!
Sailed Right over the head.
If you're a big fan of storytelling, there is no better storyteller than The Kinks' leader Ray Davies.

Or The Squeeze.
Lola got a "Lala"
jimmy page did the guitar solos on this track

One of the first 2 45's I bought when I was 12-13. Good thing my parents couldn't understand the lyrics, lol. Lola wasn't a girl.
Going to a sleazy club and hooking up with a guy by mistake has probably happened to all of us (lol)

Try Come Dancing by the Kinks a story about his sister.
The Kinks, kings if the hating Brothers. Followed by Oasis, then the Black Crowes

Did you miss the big point at the end where he said that he says he knows he is a man and so is Lola... Have the feeling you missed that 😛
Low flying pane there my friend, you missed it!
Another one that just didn't get. I think if they read the lyrics as they listened, they would really appreciate it.
Try Sympathy for the Devil by Rolling Stones
I watched you miss it, you were following quite well up until then. Well a lot of reactors missed it. Listen again.
