My mom heard this on the car radio as we were driving home. First response was, "What?!?!". Second response was, "Oh, this is great!", with a big smile on her face. The Kinks and Mom were both ahead of their time. I should add that I'll turn 75 y/o in a couple weeks.
The audience always went crazy as soon as they heard the guitar opening. Anyway, the band was in a bar somewhere in Europe and their manager was so drunk he didn't realize he was dancing with a transvestite, while the band was falling on the floor laughing. So that's the origin of the song. Also a Top Ten hit all over the world. Check out Apeman by The Kinks.
Come Dancing is such a nostalgic song that reminds me of my sister. An 80s hit! The Kinks were amazing and very underrated. Thank you for your reacts L33! ❤😊
All Day and All of the Night is a terrific early song by the Kinks. Along with 'You Really Got Me', they develop a sound that would have generations of guitarists turning up that gain knob.
I grew up in South London and played drums and sang in a couple of local bands in the 1960s (I am 82 now) and Live in Australia. The Kinks were my favourite band in the 1960s love all of their songs, back then all bands had to be able to play good live and even recording studios were not anywhere near as good as today, autotune was non existant...I was around when Rock n Roll began they said it wouldn't last but here we are in 2024 and it's really great to know that young people like yourself are still experiencing the pure and talented bands that we grew up with.
Kinks are one of the greatest British groups. Up there with Stones, Beatles, The Who, and others. Ray Davies is one of the best songwriters of the 20th century.
I like how you're Old School when it comes to the sound quality Lee, The Kinks had a song "Tired of Waiting for You." Released when I was a kid and is one of my favs.
I'll add it to the list! And thank you bro I appreciate that. Something timeless about this sound. Nowadays sound goes out of style within a month... crazy
I LOVE how you are becoming so familiar and appreciating music from the 60’s and 70’s. I know everyone probably think their music is the best but this really was. Keep up your trip of discovery.
In concert Ray would play the opening chords and the crowd would react. He'd say, nah, you're not ready yet. A few songs later he would do the same, and then again. By time they broke it out the audience was MORE than ready for it. I hope you give a listen to Apeman and Ducks On The Wall.
Great react. It’s cool to really listen to the song itself, already knowing what it’s about. This came out when I was 10. But I was the oldest child and wouldn’t hear/appreciate it it and so much more for several years later.
They played this in 82 in Detroit. Great song from a fun and sophisticated songwriter (Ray). You should checkout 'Celluloid Heroes', 'Sleepwalker', 'Life on the Road', 'The Hard Way', 'Shangri La', '20th Century Man', 'A Well-Respected Man', 'I'm in Disgrace', 'Attitude', and 'Give the People What They Want'.
Great reaction. The Kinks were masters of British social commentary. Some other great ones in that vain are Well Respected Man, Dead End Street and the phenomenal Shangri-la!
You actually nailed it. The kinks were always considered "working class" so middle class is observant. Many of their songs are about the upper class taking advantage of the lessor classes.
Sounds of the seventies! Greatest and uplifting music ever, without any props. For some reason, this song and "Yellow River" by Jeff Christie defined one great summer in my teens. Love it.
Fun song. Big hit. Many people shocked by the lyrics/subject in 1970. Very controversial. Coca-cola sued them for mentioning the product in the first verse, so they had to change it for radio to “cherry cola.” Love playing this out a gig. It’s fun to play too…..
Not quite -- It was the BBC that refused to play the song as the reference to "Coca-Cola" was considered product placement, so "cherry cola" was substituted for radio play.
The Kinks were a genre unto themselves. Van Halen covered their ‘Where have all the good times gone’ check out their 1965 version, or even their 1979 live version. They never disappoint. So much great music.
I'm glad you are mentioning the great harmonies. The Kinks were especially good at that and yes, a top notch band like them all had great singers. Not the yelling that too often is passed off as "singing" today. Still fresh, alive and FUN 53 years later.
You should check out “30 Days in the Hole” by Humble Pie. There’s a bit at the beginning where the guys are tuning up the vocals. And then it starts banging ✌🏻🤟🏻🤘🏻
The Kinks are a great backing vocals band. The reason that is so is 1) genetics. Ray is the lead singer and Dave , his brother is the lead guitarist and backing vocalist, It also just happens their voices are exactly an octave apart. That tends to lead to great sounding harmonies. Btw the reason it sounds like a happy song is it is a happy song. Guy meets Girl/guy? guy falls for girl/guy? guy settles down with girl/guy
Did you notice during the outro on every 2nd beat someone would hit a reverb unit and cause it to crash at same time as the crash cymbal. Combined, it creates an incredible explosive sound.
7:20 Love your comments about the sound engineering from back then. I swear, we bought our first vinyl records by the Beatles in “HiFi Monoaural”. Mono. And played them on our Dad’s cabinet record player. Again, I swear they never sounded better! Big, full sound. Voices and instruments all up front. For me the stereo separation that came later was always disappointing.
@L33Reacts right after I watched this my sister sent me a video of Joni at the Grammys last night. The 80 year old sang Both Side's Now, it was beautiful and sad. It's on RUclips, check it out.
It was banned by the BBC, not because of the story line, but because it was advertising Coca Cola. I think they made a special version for broadcasting and used "cherry cola" instead.
Thanks, L33 - Kinks were an amazing band.. so many different styles of songs.. this was a "hit" despite the fact that not many understood the meaning.. lol....hope you react to more of their work!
Another great video mate! And i agree as well, i love the rawness of these recordings. I saw Ray Davies perform a little night time acoustic set in the woods at Glastonbury. It was magical man. Love your videos🙏💚
That's when the recording production was real. Analog. And they really knew what they were doing back then too. Further back to the source is always the best audio experience. Today you can do anything, so with an ear to the old school, and maybe recording on old school equipment too, will bring a richer sound.
The Kinks were the greatest! They even knocked The Beatles off of the #1 hit list with You Really Got Me. They were garage punk before anyone knew what that was!
Great reaction and great comments on sound production then vs now. Lots of commenters here have mentioned just a small portion of the Kinks’ incredible catalogue, but if you’d like to react to a deep cut with incredible harmonies and fantastic drumming, I strongly recommend This Is Where I Belong.
Thank you, L33. You have a real gift in front of the camera and a good voice. Your authenticity really shines through. Bang up job, man. "Walter" and "All the Day and All the Night" are two real percussion rave ups. "Dead End Street" is proto-punk in terms of singing. Loving your work.
Hey, thanks, bro I really appreciate that. I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. I have a blast making them and I'm getting cultured as I go. So it's perfect haha. I've been digging the kinks too so I'll add those to the list. Thank you for watching 😁
Honestly in terms of song writing The Kinks are up there with Ths Beatles with songs like Shangri-La, Days, Autumn Almanac, Come Dancing, All Day and All of the Night, Waterloo Sunset, Apeman, Dedicated Follower of Fashion, Sunny Afternoon and You Really Got Me.
This entire album is incredible. The Kinks had a lot of concept albums, and this album takes on the recording industry. Lots of really incredible songs here. Definitely do 20th Century Man next, and then Victoria and Australia!
Two things: I am with the many commenters who want Celluloid Heroes next. And I want to thank the commenter who finally explained how the song came to be. Their intoxicated manager getting dragged onto a club dance floor by a transvestite. So they wrote the song! All these years I was kind of not wanting to know.😅
You are such an inspiration in the ways that would never ever chose to be. As to Rick, he had the balls to admit when he was confronted with a set of balls hanging from a person that he thought was a woman. As he says...Girls will be boys and boys will be girls It's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world Except for Lola
The Kinks are definitely my favorite band. I've seen them live over 30 times (all on the east coast). Their influence is all over punk, hard rock and metal. Ray is the poet laureate. Pete Townshend says there is not one Kinks song he doesn't like. Try Black Messiah from the Misfits album. Dave is a great guitar player but, he is the most creative rhythm guitar player in all off rock and roll. In Black Messiah, her really gets to prove his chops. It is a reggae song that Ray somehow is able to incorporate a Dixie Land Jazz brass section in for the bridge and it actually fits. Who does that? Check it out. Thanks for all of your reaction videos.
I just got a new puppy & named her Lola. I went out & made a cool playlist of Lola songs. Of course this classic was included. I remember this playing on AM rock radio when I was a teenager. Can’t imagine that being the case today. 🙁
Kinks were greatest band and first concert I ever saw in concert A few suggestions : Village Green Preservation Society Picture Book Dedicated Follower of Fashion Another great band is Small Faces Itchykoo Park Whatcha Gonna Do About It You Need Lovin ( Every Led Zep fan need to hear this track )
A great Kinks song to hear would be A Rock And Roll Fantasy. Another one is Around The Dial. It's Kick-Ass good. It's about a radio DJ that goes missing from the airwaves. Ray sings about the DJ's good qualities and he ponders some reasons why he can't find him on his radio waves anymore. We used to have significantly friendly relationships with our radio DJs. Keep up the good work.
What you said about the sound - also a great reason to prize the vinyl! BTW, you will be blown away if you can find the documentary movie on Tom Dowd. Legendary engineer who was also a producer and musician.
My preferred Coca Cola version - this song was banned for a while in Australia, but the Cherry Cola version was allowed later. But the reason was the innuendo, not the commercial branding as in the UK. Banning helped it become a hit here!
The beauty of this song is its ambiguity. I mean sure, but nothing's for sure. And the genius of the last verse: Well I'm not the world's most masculine man But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man And so is Lola
The Davies brothers were definitely from a working class background, not sure about the other two. From Muswell Hill in North London. I believe Ray lives in the same area to this day.
It’s true. When you don’t put in the work you don’t get the mastery. If you learn guitar, you have to learn acoustic, not just electric. Your technique has to be good for the acoustic to sound well. It improves your overall playing, acoustic and electric. Don’t forget “All Day And All Of The Night”, and I love “She’s Got Everything”. Thanks!
The swagger is very Stones-esque, at a time when the Stones were ascendent following the Beatles' breakup. But it's still uniquely a Kinks song because of Ray's unique lyrical genius. And we all agree -- everything back then sounded better. 😎
The Kinks are a great band. You really Got Me is a great song by them.Just a suggestion. You may want to react to the Band Deep Purple. Very talented band. Child in Time or Highway Star.
Also, try APEMAN by The Kinks from about this same time. Be the first to react to Ray Davies' (pronounced Davis) solo THE TOURIST from his 2006 solo album 'Other Peoples' Lives'. I first caught it in the erstwhile film WAR, INC.(2008).
Those wonderful harmonies are mostly guitarist Dave Davies, who has to be one of the best male to male backing vocalists of an time. His voice is perfectly suited to it. And despite brother Ray getting most of the attention and credit as the principal songwriter and lead vocalist, Dave is an excellent and very influential guitarist. He pretty much laid down the blueprint for hard rock through their earlier singles. The music sounds infinitely better back then. Analogue beats digital every day of the week. No contest really. The sound and quality of rock music has been gradually dumbed down since at least the mid '70's. The Kinks were anything but middle class. From a working class area of North London. Sorry man, your definition of middle class is different to mine. More Kinks? "Shangri-La", "Picture Book", "See My Friends", "Days", "This Time Tomorrow", "Sitting In My Hotel Room", "Tired Of Waiting For You", "Well Respected Man", "Dead End Street", "David Watts"... there's far too many to list.
@L33Reacts It's just a different meaning of middle class in the U.S and the UK and Australia (where I'm from). Over here and in the UK middle class means reasonably well off. You and I (and The Kinks) would come under working class. Easy misunderstanding to make. Sorry about that. The Kinks are a literal treasure trove of underappreciated gems. Particularly from their inception (1963) through to the early '70's. In that period, their recorded output is every bit as good as their more famous contemporaries, The Beatles, Stones, and Who. When you go through all that material of theirs, you could even argue that their catalogue is even stronger than that of their contemporaries. They were often ahead of the curve too. Often pioneering a style that would get incorrectly credited to others.
That's the first time that I've heard the original version of "Lola". In the re-make the reference to "Coca Cola" had to be changed to "Cherry Cola" to avoid a law suit.
My mom heard this on the car radio as we were driving home. First response was, "What?!?!". Second response was, "Oh, this is great!", with a big smile on her face. The Kinks and Mom were both ahead of their time. I should add that I'll turn 75 y/o in a couple weeks.

Celluloid Heroes, Victoria, You Really Got Me and/or All Day and All of the Night, Sunny Afternoon, David Watts … Long list
Great catalogue... They deserve more exposure and credit.
Great react. It’s cool to really listen to the song itself, already knowing what it’s about. This came out when I was 10. But I was the oldest child and wouldn’t hear/appreciate it it and so much more for several years later.
I’m 74 and when this song came out, no one really cared. It was a great song. Apparently, we haven’t evolved since 1970.
Much love for The Kinks! ♥️
You are so right about the sound quality and production during the ‘60’s and ‘70’s!
I honestly prefer it... everything Is so clean nowadays. Which isn't bad at all but personally I like this sound more.
React to You Really Got Me one of their first hits back in the early mid-60s

I'm poor, so middle class is the working class to me 🤷 thank you for the suggestions I'll definitely add them to the list. I really enjoy these guys 🙏
Hehe. Young man yells at cloud! 😁 But I agree about autotuned vocals. It takes the humanity and the soul out of the performance.
The Davies Brothers....sibling hatred long before Oasis. But, they also made great music. Check out Apeman sometime...great fun.
I'll definitely be checking out Apeman! Thank you. A lot of folks have been suggesting that one so it must be good :)
And black crowes Brothers feud ranks up there even shocked Oasis brother
Apeman and 20th Century Man 👍
That's the first time that I've heard the original version of "Lola". In the re-make the reference to "Coca Cola" had to be changed to "Cherry Cola" to avoid a law suit.
-to avoid a law suit.- The BBC's no advertising policy.
@@650Max Yeah - that was it. Thanks for the memory refresh.
Hi my friend if your not already a stones fan try some of their stunning songs
I'm still amazed this song got past the censors in 1970, both Gov't and society.
Censer is certainly a word but it's one of those things for spreading incense around. You mean censors.
