I spent a couple of hours on this today. I'd installed the WoS mod, saw the documentation for Enigma and thought "Yeah, fine I'll get round to looking at that sometime". Until...dah-dah-dit-dit-dah-dah and in comes an encrypted message. OK let's give it a go, following the instructions. There followed a humbling experience after which I was overawed with respect for the Enigma codebreakers, given that for a while it seemed that I would be unable to crack it even though I had an Enigma machine and the code books! It's very satisfying when you see an intelligible message start to emerge. Big kudos to the modders for this amazing piece of work.

Probably the most immersive sim you´ve ever played.
@taff. Just a little tip to do the enigma about 1000x faster. At the bottom of the enigma keyboard there is s grey bar above that is a copper square. Click on the middle and it should check(you can now use ur keyboard instead of broken German mouse click nightmare ) second tip you can click on the right colum on ur scratch pad where it puts the descrambled code in and use it to write out the coded message then you can send it to ur ships journal so you won't lose it. Very important if its a 30 block message... Yes they get that big. And they will give you coordinates to patrol
I know this is an old post, but when I type in the scratchpad in the rightmost column, it still activates all of the keypresses in the background, so I end up teleporting to the bridge, opening my map, pulling out my charts and submerging my sub, while trying to type in the message so I can hit 'send to log'. Is there any way to prevent this happening? It's incredibly annoying.
@@MBKill3rCat We are even older now, but: pause your game for the duration of the typing, that will prevent the hotkey actions! (for both descramble + typing the message to log)
Check that the year on the piece of paper at the bottom of the left side tab for the Enigma, where you choose codebooks etc., has 1939 on it. If not use your mouse scroll/middle button to change it - you must not have any of those other books/papers open to change it. Hopefully this helps; it's all I know to advise you!
mine was saying Triton too. But it's 1939 so it meant I did something wrong. Doublecheck your work; you are probably misinterpreting something because that should lead you to hydra. I did that and got the machine to point me to selecting Hydra in 1939. However, you could skip this process if you are in 1939 as it will always be hydra :)
without sombody stealing the codebooks it would have been impossible to crack it. so it was more luck than anything else that some british soldier found the books.
Hmm, yes, I think I'll leave that optional module turned off. Surely after the first time you do it you're like "that was neat" but then after the 50th spam message from BdU you're just wishing you could delegate?

Hi Taff, have you ever had any problems with playing games on youtube in terms of it being a copyright issue or does it not count as copyright when it is a game? Just wanted to know before I start adding gaming videos to my channel. Thanks
Yes its a constant battle with false claims etc. 99% will allow game footage under fair use as I'm using it to create the episode, they provide the tools i create the story (game play) also adding commentary also add to this. However there is a constant battle with false claims for sounds images etc etc which can be very frustrating but is part and parcel of RUclips. Then there is the adapocolypse where RUclips constantly marks videos as non ad friendly and you have to request a manual review to grant monetization but the video requires a minimum of 1000 views...its a complete mess
For the legal side of things, it depends. There hasn't really been a well determined argument either way on if games are fair use or if they come under copyright so both sides just assume they are right. However its very rare for a game dev to fight against anyone because they have seen the absolutely massive benefits of advertising through youtube to no cost. I know I've bought a number of games solely due to youtube (considering a few solely due to Taff), and indeed games are being designed around that concept. There are still a few which oppose youtubers, Nintendo being the only major company I can think of off the top of my head. However even though they have hit people with copyright they almost always strike the video and take it down, even though they currently don't have a clear legal case to do so. It is absolutely possible for someone to respond with the weight of law and take Nintendo to court for their actions but unfortunately its pretty rare to find anyone willing to put hundreds to millions of dollars into a legal battle to defend one single video from Nintendo, hence why there has still been no case to display what is and isn't allowed.
I dont know if it has been attempted nor if it's possible to brute force the complete system since it's a combination of different physical factors: the scrambler starting position, the selection and arrangement of the scramblers and the ring and plugboards settings, for a ML algorithm to sort all of that without initial training it would be quite impressive and it would be considered a proper Artificial Intelligence capable of reasoning (we would all be doomed) although in 2017, a ML algorithm using statistical probability and with a lot of training broke the encryption with 90% accuracy in less than 10 minutes. But, It didn't 100% decipher it, it just used data from the training to translate the code into something understandable and they used just one key (the Germans would switch keys each month). It is always said that Turing decipher the enigma machine (or at least he takes all the credit) but in reality it was a polish mathematician who first decipher the system with the help of documents describing the inner working of the enigma machine provided by a German whistleblower back in the 20's, but because the Brits didn't think Germany could defy the british might, they decided that it wasn't important enough to decipher.
But you really need to head over to Subsim and follow the instructions to install the Wolves of Steel Megamod. It adds so much to the game and gets rid of so many bugs that the vanilla version has.
