The series came way before Ubi made trash. Honestly in that era they were one of the greatest devs. AC 1-4, Far Cry, Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, etc. Ubi in its current form would never go anywhere near submarine simulators.

Unmodded and on release day UBOAT looks like it may be one of the best WW2 sub sims we have seen yet (compared to other unmodded sub sims). The beta branch keeps adding new and interesting features, and major bug fixes. They are adding more and more manual features to the game that should help satisfy the more hardcore sub simmers, or ones who want to focus on that aspect. Myself I'm pretty casual and I am still OK playing the game as a managment game as much as anything and letting my crew help me setup solutions/tracking, and the game does a great job with that. Throw in the missions that give some real life to the game when on patrol as well. On top of that it seems like the devs themselves are very active with the community and in the discussion forums, so I could see strong support after launch and maybe even DLC/Expansions (more subs?). They actually seem like fans of sub sims and WW2 Uboats. Even if they don't for whatever reason, probably financial since this is a niche genre and very small dev, mods are fully supported even in early access. If people have fixed the Silent Hunter series with no real mod support (officially) UBOAT could be a crazy game in a few years after launch matching a lot of different wants from a sub sim. I wouldn't mind seeing this comparison again after launch of the UBOAT, but right now it doesn't seem fair to compare even unmodded SH5 (or 3) to UBOAT when things are changing so quickly with it.
The ai in sh3 is imo better than in sh5. the onealex mod is fabulous for sh3. wolves of steel for sh5. uboot is more akin to sh3 in that it focusses on crew mgmt. but both are more like uboot ww2 military sims. Update: After viewing some of the updates in the unstable beta, I want to tentatively recant my statement about Uboot not being a mil sim. They seem to have added quite a bit of detail (torpedo heating times etc) that definitely push this in the direction of mil sim. So, I guess we need to see where the game actually lands in the 1.0 to really compare them.
While i can understand wanting to compare release-only games to each other, but 2010 was 14 years ago. I think you should have then done a section comparing modded SH5 to Uboat. Not trying to downplay Uboat at all, but modded SH is a totally different beast. You can upgrade your boat in SH, add different deck-guns etc.
imagine comparing unmodded silent hunter 5 to prepatch uboat.... silent hunter (most would probably compare modded sh3 rather than sh5) has better manual torpedo targeting (not much better any more after the patch that released probably minutes after you postet this) and has realistic(ish) water physics, while in uboat ships can stop and turn as if they were on solid ground. The true difference between the two in my opinion is: Uboat is a ship management sim (damege control/crew micromanagement), while silent hunter is a shooting and evading sim (torpedo solutions, proper planning, evading killer/hunter groups) Silent hunter (5 especially) was an unfinished mess at realease and still is without mods. Uboat is an unfinished mess, but the developers don't lie about it, since they have the beta tag on it. Uboat has potential to be a great sim (although it still is quite arcady) while silent hunter can only be salvaged by modders and is very old tech by now. So probably uboat will be better eventually. But most importantly: nobody in their right mind would ever, ever, ever play silent hunter 5 unmodded.
Everything I read about mods for SH5 (Steam Version) said I would break the game if I tried to install them. I will see if that is true. I just installed SH3. What mods would you recommend?
@warmaster.gaming I use GWX OneAlex mod for SH3. Don't remember the link, but their discord has the full game modded FOR FREE. Highly recommended, as it is a nearly 20 year old game, with this version, you don't need to fiddle with many of your pc settings to get it running on modern hardware. They have graphics and rendering mods built into it to rectify that very issue for easy "plug-and-play" right from install. Very clear instructions on how to download and install in the discord. I had SH3 up and running in about 30mins with this version. Go get it and have some fun. OP is correct though, SH3 is the "King of Subsim" games. Give it a shot, then make a fair comparison of itself and Uboat.
Can you do a tutorial on how to get SH5 to work in 2024?? I used to play a few years back and I loved it, but when I built my new system which is 10x more powerful than my last one, I cant get the game to work. I can navigate the main menu and I can start a new campaign, etc.. but I cant get it to actually load in. HOW DID YOU GET IT TO WORK??😭😭
I love them both for different reasons, mostly because of the theatres involved but each has different quality of life additions that make each feel different enough. Uboat wins overall for me though because of the seemless cut from exterior to full interior.
To be fair Silent Hunter 3 grey wolves mod is still the favorite of everyone and I think the one to beat, I love it personally, will try uboat though. Never tried 5 or 4, heard 4 was a disaster
4 was amazing. Not perfect and like all silent hunters, it requires some mods due to its age. But that game was the game that got me into subsims and the silent service.
With the Wolves of steel you can actually do celestial navigation, where you wont even know where you are without knowing the navigational stars, or doing dead reckoning in every hour. The only subsim which can beat Silent hunter 5 is Wolfpack, nothing comes close to it, including uboat.
"You shouldn't have to register an online account for an offline game!" Man, if only you knew. Upon release, Silent Hunter 5 was one of the first games (together with Assassin's Creed II) that used Ubisoft's then-new "always online" DRM. Meaning you could only play the game while you were connected to the internet. The game would boot you out if you lost your internet connection. The Uplay services were actually DDOS-ed not long after launch, and you couldn't play both games for several days. Dark times.
It's so much better with the Wolves of Steel megamod, that mod pretty much changes/fixes every single thing in the game. It's as if someone built a new submarine game and just took the audio, graphics and UI from SH5.

The tutorial on UBOAT has been a complete mess for me. Things just keep breaking on every play session. At one point i was stuck in slow-mo because the stupid bilge pump refused to turn on. Managed to get past this reloading the game, but now i'm stuck at the port because clicking on the recruit officer doesn't do shit.
I’d play SH 5 again if I could get the mods for the game to install and work. But I can never figure out how to install mods to sh3,4 or 5. Wish they would make an easy way to update them like on a console game. But as of now Uboat is best sub sim ever that I’ve played. I’ve yet to play Wolfpack though.
I really like Dangerous Waters game. Any games like this? I still play it today: It is awailable on Steam but you need to cheak Steam discusion to make in work on Windows 10.
Sea Power : Naval Combat in the Missile Age should be coming out soon which looks very similar. There is also Cold Waters that out of the box allows you to control a nuclear sub in the cold war era. There are mods for it that you play other subs and ships.
@warmaster.gaming silent hunter 5- garbage, terrible, not worth your time. Silent hunter 5+wolves of steel- great, amazing, the most authentic ship simulator on the market 😆
uboat needs to take some inspiration from the immersive elements of SH3. Especially around the ports and with GWX mod, SH3 just feels so much better when observing the scenery. Ports feel alive, despite not having the npc interaction that uboat does. There's dock workers and soldiers everywhere, a brass band playing while nurses shower your departing boat in flowers, a mess of port traffic to steer clear of, aircraft guarding the port and even enemy air raids, lighthouses and navigation buoys, flocks of seabirds guiding you to shore. It also feels less censored, which on one hand draws a bunch of wehraboo weirdos to the community, but also adds a thematic element of contrasting idealist promises vs horrors of reality, like Das Boot also emphasizes. It's not a perfect game and it's a shame it crashes so much on modern hardware, but I hope the best parts get integrated into its spiritual successor.
Not played SH5 for years but didn’t it have options to make it so you have to plot the torpedos your self instead of the instant plotting that’s shown in this video?
I´ve played both games a lot and this is what they offered for me. Uboat: delicious graphics, historically acurate in terms of how your sub worked, missions are more diverse, sound design is great and adds a lot of immersion. The controls are not that intuitive sometimes and I don´t like the crew management a lot tbh, cause even in full release state there are still bugs regarding crew management. Overall the controls are very complicated and sluggish sometimes which is especially annoying while running attacks. SH5: only enjoyable with TWoS mod. Graphics for a 2010 game is amazing. First person view adds a lot of immersion even though the sounds are not that great. You can move forward in time quite fast cause there is no crew management to be done. Steering the sub in critical situations is easier than in Uboat. Also is attacking. TWoS mod offers a lot of helping tools and therefore an easy entry for casual players. The AI is quite cheesy. Destroyers often have super human hydrophones and hear your sub while silent running at periscope depth. However getting away from them wihle being submerged is very easy. So there are never real "hunter and hunted" sitations. Just go deep and silent and thats it. Same goes for airplanes. They are no real threat. Your watch crew spots them so early every time that you never engage with planes if you not want to. This gets more annoying the longer your campaign lasts. SH5 has a special place in my heart cause it was the only modern subsim available for a long time. But there is a reason why even then a lot of subsimmers stayed with SH3 with mods. SH5 had a looot of flaws from the get go and even the TWoS mod never got all of them fixed. So now, with having a modern a relatively flawless subsim in Uboat makes it quite hard to return to SH5. I still do now and then but only if i am fed up with the crew management stuff. Overall Uboat is the better simulation but still needs some work.
uboat at 100% realism + mods has the same hardcore realism feeling as SH 5 fully modded, plus it has A LOT more things (missions, crew management, events ...) than sh5 just doesnt have.
Great comparison, played both, loved both, but enjoy uboat more, mainly for the Atlantic side rather than pacific. How about a uboat vs sh3, since everyone seems to rave about SH3?
Uboat could easily be a better game down the line, but for now SH5 is just a far more complete game when modded with Wolves of Steel. If SH3 had a decent graphics mod then i would still be playing that, it's looking a bit too dated for me to immerse myself into.
What's keeping me away from UBOAT is how easy is to get free kills in enemy port. You can swim submerged (to avoid costal guns) to enemy port, surface the boat and wreck havoc without enemy opossition. Talking about broken immersion. Didn't play stock SH5 (only with wolf of steel mod) but you can't do same thing there without like 90% chance of not coming back alive
I appreciate the video but can’t help thinking there are indeed some glaring things missing in your comparison. Every fan of the genre would tell you that Silent Hunter 5 is indeed only good due to the mods. Personally I like both Uboat and the Silent Hunter Series. But it’s really the latter that is the true sim.
nobody plays vanilla silent hunter. not the best comparison... since most of us are hardcore players and would play them modded. would like another video for sh3 and 5 modded
Uboat is such dog water and I've invested over 70+ hours only to see crew members not doing what I ordered them to do, along with the stupid Uboat beaching while accelerating time on the map just to get to the target area which takes decades to do! Uboat is trash in comparison to Silent Hunter 4 or 5 which I own both they're awesome games that too many people put down only because most of what Steam offers is either broken or no longer supported! Let's not forget about how Steam lost that big lawsuit recently in court when lots of Steam users couldn't obtain refunds due to Steam's refund/scam system (if you play 2hrs or more you're stuck with the game) which is just wrong to do to anyone I mean how can a person know just from 2 hrs if a game is going to good??? Funny thing is I got my SH4 and SH5 games through Epic and guess what? They ran with no issues or any patches needed because unlike Steam, Epic only has titles that WORK and because Epic would love to steer Steam loyalists away from Socialists like Valve who suppress many American gamers for speaking freely I mean God forbid you get frustrated with the devs of any game on Steam and post it in the discussion section just to vent because it won't be long until you receive a "community message" from Steam saying your post was deleted or that you've been banned from posting to said game's community discussion section now if that's not a violation of your Constitutional rights then I don't know what is and the worst part is that Steam is located in the state of Washington!!! Last I checked that was a state within the USA yet they restrict your FREE SPEECH! Avoid Steam, look into their competition like GOG or Epic you'll save money and a headache and your rights won't be VIOLATED.
Both games are crap, buggy like hell. Don't believe me? Read the negative reviews about Uboat... reviewers all complain about how buggy and unfinished the game is.
The problem is every time I buy a game from a small studio they sell out to Ubisoft, Microsoft, or Sony. Within a month or two I have to create an account on their network to play my single player game. I bought SH5 when it came out. The first week or so I couldn't even play the game because the Uplay servers were down. Then when they got the servers up I realized it was unplayable anyway. It took years for the modders to fix it.

I'm going to try the Wolves of Steel mod and see how it goes.
This should be a given. Uboat is way better. Sorry silent hunter 5.
nobody plays vanilla silent hunter. not the best comparison... since most of us are hardcore players and would play them modded. would like another video for sh3 and 5 modded
It's in the works!
The game is fully released now. I have yet to encounter a single bug in the game now that its released.
Please delete this video and recreate it with you saying boat instead of ship.
Ubisoft? Nope.
@@RobertLutece909 Years back Ubisoft was OK, it was worth putting up with some issues because some games were great. Now? Apart from the fact that you don't own your games, they have gone terribly woke. Too bad.
