  • Calf catcher keeping rancher safe, during tagging and applying dehorning paste (for horned calves). Dehorning requires the calf to be pinned to the ground to keep it's head still. Calves falling down was a result of their young age (less than a day old). They were not bumped by the unit.

Wish we had that rig 40 years ago, maybe I'd be getting around better today. Had many a mama's blow snott in my back pocket tagging and casting babies. Great rig.

That's the best way to work with baby calves.
We had Brahma cows with BIG horns. My dad would put the pickup between the
cow and the calf. I would jump out of the truck, grab the calf, put him in the truck while
he was crapping all over my arm.
I was looking back at the cow waiting for a horn to be rammed into my rear side.
I would make sounds of baby calves so the cow would follow the truck all the way to
the barn. Sometime she would stop and want to go back but I persisted in making the
    baby calf sounds.
    Oh, those were the days.

Great video. It's refreshing to see cattle being handled professionally. The explosion of farm hobbyist videos on RUclips seems more a contrivance of animal rights idiots than it does any productive trend in animal husbandry. I'm going to puke if I see one more hippy sobbing at the prospect of harvesting the very livestock he ostensibly raised for meat. The pragmatism and objectivity with which the man in the video went about his work sets a standard to which all hippy non-hackers should aspire.

    • @judydawnsmith3877

I appreciate your comments however a short video does not tell the whole story. We live in Canada and during calving season it is very possible that we can expect 1+ft of snow and temperatures down to minus 20C in a blizzard situation. This pasture is designated for the purpose of calving cows with corrals and smaller holding areas on a flat area below some hills for protection. We start with the whole herd in this pasture and as the calves reach 4-5 days age the pairs are moved to an adjacent pasture. All are fed hay as the temperatures have not climbed high enough for the grass to grow at this time of year. This particular pasture only has cattle on it 2.5 months of the year to preserve the native grass.

Bubba Young we have 500 cows we calve out in a month having sometimes upward of 25 calves in a day. It is important the cows be protective because of the presence of coyotes which will attack newborns. All these cows are handled on foot several times a year without incident. They are quiet but not pets.
