The idea of watching a heartfelt television drama about war, when almost everything we’re seeing in media today is coverage of ongoing war may not sound too appealing, but that’s exactly why the release of "All The Light We Cannot See" matters now more than ever.
As fans of the 2012 book of the same name by Anthony Doerr already know, "All The Light We Cannot See" expertly shows how sometimes the things that divide us most are just barriers keeping us from our own humanity and the empathy we should have for others.
The four-hour miniseries, which is out now on Netflix, stars newcomer Aria Mia Loberti in an outstanding debut performance flanked by Mark Ruffalo, Louis Hoffman, Hugh Laurie and more.
Set in multiple time periods around World War II, the series tells the story of Marie-Laure (Loberti), a blind French girl who flees Paris with her father (Ruffalo). Seeking refuge with her uncle (Laurie), Marie-Laure participates in his resistance by transmitting forbidden radio broadcasts.
This leads her to cross paths with a German teenager named Werner (Hofmann), who has been forcefully enlisted by Hitler’s troops to shut down the broadcasts. Unexpectedly, the two learn that they are more bonded that either of them would have expected.
When SheKnows’ Reshma Gopaldas sat down with director Shawn Levy for an exclusive conversation, he discussed exactly why the show’s storyline matters now more than ever. “I make stories in the hope they will reach and connect with a broad audience and this story felt so compelling and, frankly, felt important to me,” Levy began.
Levy is keenly aware of the landscape on which he is releasing his show. “I’m Jewish, I’m Canadian, I never expected to make a show where the Nazi soldier is as human, sympathetic and dimensional as the French heroine who works for the resistance.” Continued at sheknows.com.
