  • Earlier this year (April 25), Netflix held a screening for the upcoming limited series All The Light We Cannot See, followed by a post screening conversation moderated by Katie Couric with Director, Shawn Levy and cast Aria Mia Loberti (Marie-Laure) & Louis Hofmann (Werner)
Directed by Shawn Levy and written by Steven Knight, the four-part limited series introduces newcomers Aria Mia Loberti and Nell Sutton as the older and younger Marie-Laure respectively, and stars Mark Ruffalo as Daniel LeBlanc, Hugh Laurie as Uncle Etienne, Louis Hofmann as Werner, Lars Eidinger as Von Rumpel, and Marion Bailey as Madame Manec.
All The Light We Cannot See premieres on Netflix November 2, 2023.
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE is a groundbreaking limited series that follows the story of Marie-Laure, a blind French girl and her father, Daniel LeBlanc, who flee German-occupied Paris with a legendary diamond to keep it from falling into the hands of the Nazis. Relentlessly pursued by a cruel Gestapo officer who seeks to possess the stone for his own selfish means, Marie-Laure and Daniel soon find refuge in St. Malo, where they take up residence with a reclusive uncle who transmits clandestine radio broadcasts as part of the Resistance. Yet here in this once-idyllic seaside city, Marie-Laure’s path also collides with the unlikeliest of kindred spirits: Werner, a brilliant teenager enlisted by Hitler’s regime to track down illegal broadcasts, who instead shares a secret connection to Marie-Laure as well as her faith in humanity and the possibility of hope.

Poor Louis I feel like in all interviews I have seen, he is often pushed to the side just because of what a breakthrough Aria is. I think he did wonderful in his role and deserves a little more attention (not at all saying Aria doesnt deserve the attention, just that I wish Louis got more)

I loved the book and worried how the series could translate the complexity of the story onto the screen. The intent of the father to give his blind daughter independence by building a model of the city she lived in, to the innocence of the radio prodigy and how these two characters moved and circled around each other as the story built. This interview shows the love and respect for the novel by the Director and actors. Thank you so much for presenting it. The series is so timely, poignant, intense and beautiful, bravo well done 😊

Just finished it. Spectacular. I loved the book, also, which was very different. But each art form stands on its own. I was very moved by the series; buckets of tears at the end.

It must have been so exciting for Anthony Doerr to see Aria cast as Marie. His second book is founded on ancient translation and the preservation of stories. To have an academic in ancient rhetoric seems fated almost. Very excited to see this series and so glad it was not turned into a movie first. 💙 ✨

Yeah, I enjoyed it too and I actually didn't mind that they deviated from the source material a bit. I guess I just like being thrown a curveball. 😅

For me "all the light we cannon see" are the radio waves. Radio waves same as light are also part of the electromagnetic spectrum. The wavelengths of Visible Light is in the range of about 400 to 700 nanometers, and Radio Waves have much longer wavelengths than visible light, ranging from about one millimeter to 100 kilometers or more. In this case 1310Khz

to me it seems that the title has lots of meaning, both the waves and also the goodness that was sown in the hearts of professor's listeners. that goodness/light was helping them to stay human as far as it was possible, though sometimes it could not be seen...

I adored the book read it twice. Eagerly awaited film. Was incredibly disappointed. #1. As soon as Mark Ruffalo, one of my favorite actors, opened his mouth I was thrown by whatever accent he attempted. Every scene was a cringe when he spoke. #2. I expect changes from book to film, but the changes were too many and too different. What a shame.
