      @@thorgrimb2416 Yes I agree totally, I work in mountain bike racing at national and international level as a race director ( I never work at road races) . At national level it has been common for the officials to not wear any marking other than their uniform but at World cup level all the officials wear bibs which clearly mark who people are. It is very strange indeed that this commissaire is out in the course but then compared to mountain biking road racing is just strange altogether.

    Having officiated races myself, I would have seen this as a learning moment for the commissar. First lesson is obviously that it should be 100% clear that he is a race official. Second is that instead of making the race safer stepping out like that made the race less safe. As for the swearing, that's a bit difficult to judge, I have zero problems with the swearing in and by itself, and I always keep in mind that an athlete pumped up on adrenaline is a different beast than their regular being. My considerations would be if they were undermining the respect for the race rules and/or officials. Keeping in mind that in a situation with 2 people involved, there is usually 3 truths to it. Two subjective and one objective. The commissar may have seen things very differently. This may have been a case where he didn't realize he was causing the problem, and it seems reasonable for this to go away.

      People will swear in life-threaning situations, which is what this idiot official created. He could easily have caused a collision with his behaviour. When you have 1-2 seconds to instruct someone to get out of the way, aggressive tones and profanity can help accelerate that.

    • @tomfredrikblenning9054

      @@LeafBurrower I wouldn't nitpick that word. Think of it as the idealized situation description, two people have their own experiences, trying to tell what actually happened. "The objective truth" is what actually happened from a completely neutral vantage point. A camera could potentially be such a neutral vantage point, but that only picks up parts of the situation, so it's not necessarily the whole truth.

    • @LeafBurrower
      @LeafBurrower 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@tomfredrikblenning9054 It's a classical philosophical question whether there is such a thing as objective truth, is it not? Per Aristotle it boils down to being all about context, and in this case all we can judge it on is the camera evidence and empirical knowledge of how races are organised plus received cycle race etiquette. Add to that a touch of what we know about bureacratic and class indignance and you have a pretty good sense of what is being brought to our attention here. Of course, we haven't heard from the 'other side', but simply based on what we can see in this video the man was standing in the middle of the road while cyclists, clearly the priority road users in this instance, were barrelling towards him at a velocity that could injure him, and probably many of them, too. The commissaire had indeed behaved like a prink, and he should have got out of the fcuking road promptly, no? So the shout, however ill-tempered, was a pointed fair warning for him to move _sharpish_ , and not to alarm the cyclists again. The commissaire should apologise.

    I know wearing a high-viz tabard would have spoilt his 'gentleman at Henley Regatta' vibes, but he was clearly in the wrong. Also, considering the mental and physical stress you were under, it's absolutely no wonder you swore (I've heard much worse coming out the mouths of children on public transport too).
    Aside from the drama, it's a fantastic video and really captures the chaos of a race!

      Commissaires are issued with a standard (not hivis, all mine were grey) uniform shirt, fleece and raincoat, which riders should be able to recognise. In a few years on the job only once was it replaced by kit provided by an event sponsor (the Lincoln GP one year). I don't recognise what this bloke is wearing at all, although I resigned my commission a couple of years ago so they might have changed the design I guess.

    The swearing is the only thing the race official had to work with (and very weak at that) so he used it to shine the light away from his own misdoing. It's the ole "best defense is a good offense". Clearly he should be reprimanded for such dangerous actions and poor judgement to have the federation call you out. It's good to hear the "Authorities" softened their position after seeing the video. Does anyone know if this race official received consequences? The video, and all supporting comments in this post, should be used in the training of officials. Johnny K., Thanks for having the guts to post this.

    What's a few choice words in the heat of the moment when facing danger? You could have broke bones there in a fall or swerved into the crowd. He put you in a dangerous position through his own actions. That he is an official is crazy. That he is high up an abused his power to discipline you is nuts. It is him who clearly needs to be disciplined. Thanks for shaming them with this video. Will they take action - as a result of the publicity - or are they banding round his guy bc is high up and they are his friends?

    Having just 'recovered" from a low speed but very painful off, (mountain bike) I'm with the racer on this one. The bloke had no business being in the road like that, risking a major incident and possible severe injury to the riders. Given they were under the advice of 'pull out when lapped' the 'official' should not be trying to change the rules mid race if indeed he was telling them to move over. Whilst no-one likes being sworn at, he should not have been surprised given the circumstances. The rider should in no way be penalised for this, especially given he apologised for his language. The official should also apologise for unnecessarily causing the incident in the first place. For transparency, I race motorcycles not bicycles but if anyone stood on our tracks mid race outside of emergency action, they would be looking at criminal charges.

    Yeah, I'm afraid it is an out-dated practice for a plain-clothes commissar to stride into the center of the peloton and whisper instructions to the group leader's ear during crits. If I recall correctly, handing out leaflets was the next step in the evolution of the sport.

  • @miker4926
    @miker4926 5 месяцев назад +3

    Yep totally agree, he should not have been in the road at all, even more so without some kind of official hi viz top on. If there was a chance you'd be lapped then the leading motorcycle would give you plenty of warning anyway. He didn't need to stick his oar in. And as for swearing I thought you were quite restrained, considering the dangerous act he committed.😂

    Always be the first to complain, it puts them on the defensive. So next time this happens, file whatever formal complaint you can stating there was a dangerous action on the course by a member of the public. It would have forced them to say "oh it was our official, who wasn't wearing any uniform, but you shouldn't cuss" and then you can give the good reply "I had a safety concern that could have caused injury and you're worried about my language?"

  • @1972hermanoben
    @1972hermanoben 5 месяцев назад +1

    No apologies needed on your part: it’s a race, adrenaline is running high, competition is intense and feelings are running high and so it’s no place for anyone - especially not a commissaire - to be breaking with safety procedures in such a flagrant way. He’s representing a serious and immediate risk to everyone around you on the road and it was absolutely right to tell him in no uncertain terms to remember the danger he presented and to get back behind barriers or out of the way. Nobody but him will have had their feelings hurt: anyone there with kids will understand the conditions you’re racing under.

    I was involved, through friends, in motorcycle competitions in the 70s-90s. I found the behaviour of the officials to be almost like the staff of a grammar school, that the pupils had to blindly respect and, almost, kowtow to them. I raced in Germany in the early 80s and the whole attitude was different.

    I think you should have pushed for the hearing in any case. Rank or no, he did not withdraw from out of your path until you told him to. He had no right to be in the road and perhaps should be under investigation himself for endangering the riders by his action. As a senior official he has failed in his duty of care endangering the riders well being. Further I think the investigation should include whether he was attempting to influence the race unfairly because doesn't the positioning impact on season rankings?

But the effort some of you put in is crazy. And that pompous official actually proves my point a bit about some cyclists (I think you know what I mean) even though you are a good cyclist, that some think the some think they own the roads, he was out of order and could have spoilt the whole race by causing a collision. Good for you for recording it. CRACKING EFFORT BY THE WAY 👍👍
