I know this reply is late, but the MU100R and Motif Rack have very different sounds. Many of the MU100R's sounds are distinctly 90s while the Motif Rack still sounds fairly modern. Both have tons of unique and cool sounds on them though, so I would personally own them both if I could. One unarguable advantage the Motif Rack has over the 100R though is that it can support the user memory banks on the PLG150 expansions, so you can save your own sounds. On the MU100R, just like with every MU model, there's no way to save that data so you'll need to load your patches from MIDI every time.I imagine this would probably get annoying for, say, the PLG150-DX, if you're trying to play live without access to a computer. I'm not bothered by it personally since I do all of my composing from a desktop and most of the PLG150 boards are too expensive for me to feel comfortable buying ($500 for a PLG150-DX? Yeah no thanks >:|). I would skip out on the MU100R if I were you though and just buy a MU1000EX/MU2000EX instead - they have all of the same sounds and more, along with additional effects and two more effects slots, allowing for four effects to be applied at any time in addition to the Variation effect. They also have official Roland GS compatibility and a better General MIDI sound set if you're into playing games.
Which did you get in the end Marvin? I personally do not care whether sounds are 90s or current etc. What matters the most is if those sounds inspire you to write your best music or not. I have four MU100R + six different PLG boards and they cover everything I need pretty much.
This was awesome tech, I wonder what Yamaha have done with it - why don’t they bring it back? (with hugely increased processing power)
Thank you posting. Great job playing and demonstrating the programs. Takes time, much appreciated!
Good lord, some of those models sound so nasty. Want one so bad. Great demo!
very interesting acoustic emulations
To my ears this doesn't sound quite as good as the VL-70m
Could just be the presets are different though? 🤔
The sounds require a lot of different controllers to coax as much expression as possible. Takes a lot of playing skill to handle all that in realtime.
Are you using midi controller keyboard?
yes, Roland A80
Hello! About the yamaha mu100r. One question, you think its better to buy that than the yamaha motif rack? Because both have expansion card slots.

No one will accuse you of being a good player. But you don't practice, so don't worry about it.
I much prefer your demos and playing
