Everything was reasonable... except the ballpoint pen. Even the good ballpoints, like the jetstream, often skip when they're writing, like the examples in this video, leaving small trails of unfilled-in lines. It drives me nuts. And they feel unwieldy to boot. Ink is the only way to go!
I do have to disagree with ballpoint being the best all around pen. When they cause pain to use, for me... The right fountain pen and ink for most uses, and as I seldom have a need for writing on plastics... Though I find the Sanford markers tackle that for me. 😁
My unpopular opinion: If you want to get into washi tape, don't buy tons of colours and designs or you'll be overwhelmed. Instead, select just a few that are colour-co-ordinated with your journal cover, favourite highlighters, favourite colour pens, layout designs, etc.
I honestly just window shop online to look at them and their packaging. But do i actually want them? _mmm_ will i use them? _.. No..._ then u don't need them or should buy them right this very instant.
I think through and bought those that are easiest to match with different themes / color palettes and can be used in as many occasions as possible. I found that those are usually in muted, neutral and vintage colors (like shades of brown and blue) in simple and common pattern/ plain (dots, plaid, checker board). Those may not be everyone's favorite, but less "offensive" than bright pink or yellow. On a wedding envelope and gift boxes for adults and the elderly, those colors & patterns are pretty appropriate. If I want more colors, I use color pencils.

My somewhat unpopular opinion is that fountain pens aren't for everyone. As much as I love them, it's unrealistic that every single person on Earth is going to love them too. Some people get turned off by having to refill them from bottles or cartridges, or having to clean them regularly. Or, you've got the people who have a hard time keeping a hold of pens, so I imagine the thought of replacing even a $5 Preppy multiple times makes them wary of even trying it when Bic ballpoint pens are a few dollars for a 10 pack. Let alone a $10, $20, $30 and beyond pen. Having to troubleshoot a pen when it isn't writing is another thing I hear about when people are thinking about diving into fountain pens but aren't sure as well.

And keeping the ink flowing with regular use is not a chore or responsibility but part of "self care" and creative expression. 😉 👍👍👍👏👏👏👍👍👍 These are great!! (The whispers are the best!)
I've found writing with a stub nib fountain pen, such as the Pilot Metropolitan or a Twsbi improves my handwriting. I can't quite put a finger in why, but I definitely notice a difference. Love the videos, keep them coming!
For me, writing with a stub nib fountain pen forces me to slow down my writing and think about what I'm doing, rather than scribbling down my notes as fast as I possibly can. Writing with a beautiful pen or ink is also an enjoyable experience and can help motivate people to practice more =)
theres So Much personality in this vid i LOOve it! ive always been a minimal bujoer and stationery nerd but not in the aestetic way, just fewer better things! rn my bujo is only one page monthly memories, a master tasklist and a weekly header with the days rolling under it. the only decorating i really do is to pic three fineliners that make a nice colorpallet and write the days w them, in a nice easy font i change monthly
Not enough Josh, but a very enjoyable video thanks to the writing, narrator, and clever editing at 1:26 and 1:50. In a future video I'd like to hear "los secretos" about rollerball pens.
Too many pens is a thing. When I first started getting fountain pens, I always inked up the new one. I ended up with about 20 inked at one time. I’d only use maybe 2-3 in a day, so many of them dried out before I got around to them. Still working them down to a more usable number. I think 5-6 will work ok for me. I also started a big ink habit. I have around 40 bottles now. Probably enough ink to last for many years, but inks are the more affordable habit. If your grail pen is $500+, for the same money you can get 20-40 bottles of ink. Fountain pens alone won’t improve your writing, but they can make you more conscious of the writing experience. I have horrible penmanship, but sometimes when I am writing with a fountain pen, I slow down and pay a bit more attention and it looks nicer. Still, I can scrawl quickly just as messy as I always do, plus the greater risk of smearing. Tomoe River paper is amazing for fountain pens, but be warned, the drying time for most inks is double to triple other good papers. Still, you will get pretty much the full potential for shade, sheen, and shimmer an ink has.
👍👍Thank you for clarifying some facts regarding pen choices. I am a newcomer on the scene in the midst of the endless number of pens being manufactured these days. It has been confusing, & not a little frustrating, trying to figure out what I need & want. I really enjoy Jetpen's straightforward, & often humourous, presentations. Please keep us educated!
Loved this video, I pretty much agree with voiceover girl throughout (although I still like to use my mildliners in pastel blue and green on top of gel pen ink to avoid the harshness of using traditional bright neon yellow since like... that's an option these days! And it's ok, I don't get smudges cause I don't highlight immediately, I do it later after the ink is dry.) Very cute, thoughtfully worded and constructed, to the point, overall very appreciated video. Hope you keep these coming! ~
😆😆😆😆😆 Love this video. The voice over person did an awesome job. I agree 👍🏿 with you about the mildliners, they really aren't the best for highlighting but they are super cute. As far as having too many 🖊 pens, I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that. I'm a pen addict and Jetpens.com is my crack.
Although i love my gel pen collection, when I want to take a bunch of notes my go to is my pilot Dr.grip 4&1 multipen (translucent light blue) with jetstream refills, 2B leads, and an added endcap eraser. Like you said in the video, too many options can bog you down.
Oh, I totally agree with you on Mildliners! I bought a handful, and tried to use them for highlighting (I highlight a lot when I'm studying). In my case, the problem wasn't that they smeared gel ink, it was that they were too... mild. The highlighting just wasn't strong enough to be useful in the context of what I needed. I think they'd be better used as art pens, not advertised as highlighters.
One thing I have noticed is that I have a bit of a different handwriting with a ballpoint pen than I have with a fountain pen (my choice of pen for daily use). This is why I decided to keep a nice-looking journal for my favorite books. In it, I write 3 pages per book, writing however much of the first chapter as will fit. I write one with fountain and then one with ballpoint, over and over. This way, not only does every chapter of my favorite books stand out and make it easy to see that a new book-bit has started, but I practice handwriting with both types of pens on the daily!
Loved this video! And extra points for talking about Pilot Acroball. I been using it in my lab notebook for years and its is great for that and to take notes in class.
The one that always gets me is someone will find a pen type they prefer and suddenly start thinking it’s the best thing ever and everything else is trash. Start using good gel pens? Ballpoints and pencils suck. Start using fountain pens? Now I’m too good for traditional pens. No! You can always use a ballpoint for signing receipts or tape or something! You can beat around a gel pen more than a fountain pen too! Or write on some papers with your colorful gel pens that fountain pens couldn’t. All pens are good! Use the right tool for the job
1:09 - exactly!! i feel like the only one who is team ballpoint :"") it's just that they dry so quickly and barely (if ever) smudge!! and they work well with mildliners ;)
Meanwhile...I have a huge container of pens that I have yet to open and you're making me want to buy more...Thank you...I think 😁...lol I might have skipped over the part that said "too many pens is a real thing". Thank you again for letting me know what pens, pair well 😀
haha awesome video! love it! on an unrelated note, if it all possible, would love a version without background music. i have a tough time hearing and background music makes it harder, especially anything more fast paced.
I use a 0.2mm mechanical pencil for all my math stuff, a 0.5mm mechanical pencil for general note writing, and 2 gel pens (fine and 0.7mm tips) just because they are fun to use. I like to keep the clutter down so those 4 writing tools are all I need.
the mechanics of a fountain pen can certainly help improve handwriting practices. definitely still takes some conscious practice like any other art form. Too many pens is probably a thing... I may have a pen problem lol
I used to buy all different types of pens (the collection got donated to schools many times over the years, at least teachers could give them to students). I didn't realize my ideal pens were simply the Bic Crystal Sticks. Those are my go-to everyday pen. About a dollar a pack also isn't bad. But then I have "specialty" pens that I purchase in 1 or 2 packs bc I don't go through them at the same rate as my Bic Pens. I have drained 3 pens in nearly a year (yup, fully used for the first time in my life, despite coming super close with other pens that failed with the ink so close to the end, but still left about an inch or more of ink in the stick when they became streaky and annoying). I surprised myself with this, but it works, so I am sticking with it. A tried and true pen. So I own the basic colors (black, blue, red) and am going to branch out to their fun colors as I do love the comfort and effectiveness of these simple pens. Me from 3 years ago would have thought I had lost it. 🤷♀️ So I own up to my own Unpopular Opinion. 😁🤣🤣 I have also found using colored pencil to trace over the writing (like most would do with a fine liner) makes my notes fun, colorful, and zero bleed through on notebook paper. I didn't think I could use a pack of colored pencils down to the last possible stub, but once again, I proved myself wrong. 😁👍💗
I definitely agree with all of these opinions, and there are particularly two of them which I have always had, wondering WHY nobody told them in any video! First one, a thicker paper is not always better, I have always used 60gr paper finding it perfect for taking notes and highlighting. Then I tried the 80gr, thinking it would be better yet but... no way, there is much more showthrough, even if this counterintuitive! Second one, a ballpoint pen is much more versatile than a gel one, but who can resist the gliding of a gel pen? One more unpopular opinion for you: traditional neon highlighters generally have much less bleedthrough than the new pastel ones, who knows why?... At least, this is true for all the brands I tried which come in both neon and pastel hues... Do you agree with that?
Me thinking handwriting was always a matter of “better pens” and effort and had nothing to do with the psychical pain in my hands Years later in college is diagnosed with dysgraphia 🥲 ergonomic pens really do help tho, I want an ergonomic fountain pen just to be fancy and have cute inks
@@Graylovestea I always feel bummed that I can’t have pretty journals and stuff but I’ve tried and it’s too strenuous (paired with being a lefty especially)
@@thezaftigwendy right?! I knew I had a neurological condition that caused a lot of physical pain, but I didn’t realize it was also the reason I was slow at writing and reading. And now I teach ☺️
*So far,* my fountain pen collection is small enough (and my ink collection varied enough) that I’m rotating through it on a regular basis-the ones loaded with archival ink for journalling, the ones loaded with fun colors (or acidic iron-galls) for more transitory notes, or for water-‘erasable’ inked lines on tracing paper… but I think I might be approaching some sort of line where I’ll have to start picking some pens to actually store empty when not in use, hah.
Ballpoint pens have always been my very favorites and if I have to dig into the paper a little to make it go-even better! The most elusive are those with brown ink. I may have a few ...
I always keep a Fischer Space Pen (Bullet pen, model 400) in my pocket. It is the perfect "back up" pen. If another pen is having trouble writing, just take it out and use it. I'm a lefty and I HATE fountain pens. I've tried them because of the hype and I could never like them... They're high maintenance and they always Feather with regular paper and obviously smudge even with "fast drying inks "

Are you kidding??? Now you tell me, lol. But I NEED my huge pen collection!!!
Oh well, I'm a pen junkie and I'm not ashamed 🖋️😊♥️.

Another score on good info and fun entertainment!! This is a winning combo JetPens!!!
The multitude of colored pens IS necessary. And keeping the ink flowing with regular use is not a chore or responsibility but part of "self care" and creative expression. 😉
👍👍👍👏👏👏👍👍👍 These are great!! (The whispers are the best!)
I used Pilot G-2s all through college exclusively. I love them! But now I also now love the Energel Clena.
I love this new format, It gave me a good laugh!
Happy to see you again Josh! You’re a fun addition to the team!
Loving the videos lately Jetpens!!!
I've been looking for a clear acrylic horizontal pen holder like the one showed at 5:15. Where can I get that?
Like the video, appreciate how it was pointed out that thicker paper can mean feathering/bleeding
I love how candid you guys are!
This was a FABULOUS video!! Humorous yet informative.
Keep up the great work JetPens
👍👍Thank you for clarifying some facts regarding pen choices. I am a newcomer on the scene in the midst of the endless number of pens being manufactured these days. It has been confusing, & not a little frustrating, trying to figure out what I need & want. I really enjoy Jetpen's straightforward, & often humourous, presentations. Please keep us educated!
This was a hilarious video! Love it! And the love the narrator! She was so funny!
1:08 I feel recognized!!! Gel pens are smooth and all, but ballpoints are smooth too and write on anything, even copy paper!!!❤
😆😆😆😆😆
Love this video.
This video is so well made. I enjoyed this so much!!! Excellent production team
Although i love my gel pen collection, when I want to take a bunch of notes my go to is my pilot Dr.grip 4&1 multipen (translucent light blue) with jetstream refills, 2B leads, and an added endcap eraser. Like you said in the video, too many options can bog you down.
Thanks for the video. Uniball One gel pens do pretty well under Zebra Mildliner and other highlighters, as long as you let the ink dry on your paper.
Love the person doing the voice. Please continue using this person!
"There is such thing as too many pens."
Lies and slander! 😂
VOICE OVER GIRL I LOVE YOUU
DUDE LIKE HOW AMAZING WAS THAT
Oh, I totally agree with you on Mildliners!
I love the quality of the video. Keep it up JetPens! Yey!
You guys are so creative!
Love ALL your videos!
Laura
it's true, once i used Pilot Acroball, i can never use other pen anymore. it's really smooth. plus the ink is replaceable.
I love these Cursive Practice-SHEETS..🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠
Yes! Anyone know where to get them?
Apparent unpopular opinion: putting stickers in a book is not planning, nor is it productive.
Is the sunstar apiru clear window pencil case coming back?
No, it's discontinued unfortunately!
Hands down my favorite video from your channel. 💕
Meanwhile...I have a huge container of pens that I have yet to open and you're making me want to buy more...Thank you...I think 😁...lol I might have skipped over the part that said "too many pens is a real thing". Thank you again for letting me know what pens, pair well 😀
"There is such a thing as too many pens"
You just earned a subscriber here! Loved the honesty ❤️
these ads are funny and fast paced. i cant stop watching ... so entertaining 😁😁😁
I agree with you, there is no such thing as too many pens. I don't care what popular opinion is. They don't know what I need either.
The “Yeah yeah it’s ok” makes me scream in my head: HECK NO THAT’S NOT OK. 😂
haha awesome video! love it! on an unrelated note, if it all possible, would love a version without background music. i have a tough time hearing and background music makes it harder, especially anything more fast paced.
I use a 0.2mm mechanical pencil for all my math stuff, a 0.5mm mechanical pencil for general note writing, and 2 gel pens (fine and 0.7mm tips) just because they are fun to use. I like to keep the clutter down so those 4 writing tools are all I need.
I would love to know what ink you used for the fountain pen. For reference 3:20 minute mark 😍
Hands down best person to sit in front of the camera those facial expressions are everything
the mechanics of a fountain pen can certainly help improve handwriting practices. definitely still takes some conscious practice like any other art form.
Too many pens is probably a thing... I may have a pen problem lol
I so agree about the ballpoint pens... I used only gel pens, but since I got my jetstream alpha gel, it’s the only pen I use 💖 I’m in love
I really love how you are making stationery cool!
I really love the iconic 2 way markers, cause they work well with several fountain pen inks I have! Not many highlighters can do that
I used to buy all different types of pens (the collection got donated to schools many times over the years, at least teachers could give them to students). 😁👍💗
My favorite pen is the Bic classic, not called crystal. Bold line, smooth writing.
Me thinking handwriting was always a matter of “better pens” and effort and had nothing to do with the psychical pain in my hands
Years later in college is diagnosed with dysgraphia 🥲 ergonomic pens really do help tho, I want an ergonomic fountain pen just to be fancy and have cute inks
i also have it but I got diagnosed when I was 6
@@Graylovestea any tips? I’ve been using ergonomic pens when I can but it seems to be getting more difficult lately
@@Graylovestea I always feel bummed that I can’t have pretty journals and stuff but I’ve tried and it’s too strenuous (paired with being a lefty especially)
I had a HUGE aha when I realized that was why I had struggled so much in school. Undiagnosed neurodivergent kid with dysgraphia!
@@thezaftigwendy right?! I knew I had a neurological condition that caused a lot of physical pain, but I didn’t realize it was also the reason I was slow at writing and reading. I think the list is officially chronic migraine, dysgraphia, scotopic sensitivity, and possible adhd (like everyone else in my family) I can’t believe I managed to have a 4.75 gpa never knowing all that stuff! And now I teach ☺️
LOVE THE NEW VOICE OVER GIRL
The Acroball pen is so under rated. I love it. It writes smooth on just about any kind of paper. I have a multi four in .05. Single .05 and single 07.
You're channel is underrated
Ballpoint pens have always been my very favorites and if I have to dig into the paper a little to make it go-even better! The most elusive are those with brown ink. I may have a few ...
The "Thick paper" was from a Moleskine-Art bullet notebook, right ? ^^
I always keep a Fischer Space Pen (Bullet pen, model 400) in my pocket. It is the perfect "back up" pen. If another pen is having trouble writing, just take it out and use it. Because it is so small, you forget you have it. (They also have a tendency to fall out of your pocket.) Keep cheap ballpoint pens around for give way pens too. 😈
