    • @ari4340
      @ari4340 Год назад +6

      Yes, but it's our fault because we put them in very unnatural situations (for example being completly alone and then having to meet a rabbit, in nature they would have never been alone to begin with) and many things like that... we create the complicated situation for them sadly 😅

    After 5 years of sister bunny ownership, I am struggling to rebond since June 2023. It is now Nov 2023. I have always been successful in rebonding them within a matter of days or weeks. This video has really helped me with knowing I need to be leaving them for longer in the smaller spaces. It just feels so wrong to keep them I a small space but I know it is for their good. They're indoor bunnies and my little angels. I'm on the verge of giving them to a pro bonder not far from us for 1 week but just want to try one last time myself. They are brother and sister but after we got the whole lot spayed and neutered is when we had all sorts of problems!! My boy got a tore lip either from their fur fight or from when we were trying to kennel one while the other was free. Hard sad lesson. This is painful but rehoming will never be an option for us either. I can’t wait to be big happy family again. Update: due to my job I haven't been able to work with them 24/7 like this, but with weekends and any off time I have, I've been keeping them together as much as possible. They've been getting to go grocery shopping with us and sleep in the pen I set up next to the bed. As of yesterday (6/6/22), I have moved them into the livingroom and expanded their pen a bit more. They are doing very well and went a whole night without needing supervision. I can tell it's not fully there yet but it's a great improvement.

They ended up getting in a fight that caused an injury that needed medical attention as well. This is the first bonding scenario I’ve come across that’s very similar to mine. I'm bonding two males and they're in a space the size of your cage, both have litter boxes and do share the same water and food bowl. They flop and are relaxed as well as get treats, but do have bouts of aggression. Whenever one goes to lay next to the other in their box there's a bit of chasing, but only until the other one leaves the box. I did have some boxing, but they stopped when I said No, to them. We are on day 1.5, I read that if you separate after a fight then they'll remember the fight and you don't want that. They don't pull fur or nip anymore so, I guess that's good.

One is very social, well behaved, and quit good at doing their business in the litter box already. The other is a bit more cautious and anxious (we found out he was the runt of the litter... they are brothers), and is a bit of a poop machine. We're hoping there are still more hormones to die down to decrease the amount of territorial pooping/marking and we can get them to live together harmoniously. We think that will help the anxious one feel safer if they have a friend they can bond with. Here's to hoping we don't have any big setbacks!

      @@kyronbrown4113 my Coco and Smurf are bonded. Smurf is not fixed because he nearly died while being put under to be neutered. Smurf is a two pound dwarf. Coco is about five pounds and I got her from the Humane Society. My new rabbit is an English Spot female. She is in quarantined for another week at the recommendation of the Humane Society. We reinforced a baby gate and all the rabbits look at each other sometimes. Smurf my sweet little guy sits back and watches the two females go nuts at the baby gate. Coco wants to bite. Cookie is reacting back. Poo and pee fly when they are in this state of over drive. So whatever you do keep the cleaning supplies, broom, mop and bucket handy. I fear the two females may never get along. Still, I am enjoying my newest rabbit as she is a bit more like a dog. I cam take her outside on the deck or in the gazebo and she is not fearful like my other two. They never go out and are very content sunbathing in front of the patio door. The remaining 3 fight all the other brothers and parents. So after having them in separate hutches me and my dad made for them for just about 6-7 months now, I will finally be attempting to bond them again with this method along with some others I've read are really effective. This was so helpful. Recently I got another rabbit and I started out in the bathtub but it led to horrendous fights, so much so that there was fur everywhere and they were wrestling each other to the floor. At this point I am sort of regretting my decision because this new rabbit is causing all the problems but I don’t want to get rid of her I love her so much. I’m super nervous to put them in a small space and go for a car ride because I’m scared it’ll be hard to break up a fight if it starts. I also don’t know if I can do the 24/7 bond because I am a student and have work. This is all so stressful and I’m glad I found your video. I only tried bonding once but there was an instance where the new bunny jumped into m6 other bunny’s x pen when I was sleeping and there ended up being blood on the floor from one of them ripping the others hair out too aggressively. Thank you. I would appreciate more advice if you could give it

    • @DaniCavenderHandley
      @DaniCavenderHandley  3 года назад +2

      Hi Jolie, I remember feeling exactly the way you describe when my girls weren’t getting on.
      First things first:
      - make sure both bunnies are neutered/spayed and are at least 3 months post-op
      - do lots of scent swapping before putting them near each other - bedding and litter boxes make good swaps, as do moving toys from one to another every few days.
      After that, make sure you don’t rush the initial process of letting them be near eachother. If you’ve got a problem with them jumping barriers, get some cardboard, sheets of wood or even a fitted bed sheet at a push, and make a ceiling for their pens so they can’t hop out. Leave them next to each other for as long as it takes for them to start ignoring and chilling out near the other bunny.
      Once you’ve done these steps, proceed to the car bonding but you MUST have someone else driving so you can sit with the bunnies and break up any issues. Choose a driving route that will allow the car to go quite fast such as a dual carriage way, so that there isn’t lots of starting and stopping. Wear 2 pairs of gardening gloves and be ready to get your hands into the box as quickly as you can if anything starts up.

      @@DaniCavenderHandley I’ve only just seen this but thank you so so much!! I tried everything that you said and even other things that were recommended to me by others. I did have their enclosures next to each other about a month before starting with a small gap and there was a fitted sheet on top of the new rabbits pen (she loves to jump) with bind clips attaching it… she ended up STILL being able to jump and get out. I had to put her in a decently sized (but not as big) cage with a secure top because it got so bad. She has gotten a lot of free roam time so I wasn’t too worried about it.
      The absolutely CRAZY thing is, is that they are now COMPLETELY bonded. No fighting, chasing, marking of territory, in fact they love to share a litter box and cuddle next to one another.
      What is crazy about this is that they still wouldn’t get along when I put them in small spaces. I then tried to do the ONE thing no one recommends and everyone says to avoid- I put them in a 4x4 x-pen and sprinkled some pellets on the ground to sort of distract them. At first there was a bit of chasing but no fights and no biting. I figured since they were doing great I would keep them in there for awhile. About two hours after starting the first session they were nose to nose and cuddled side by side for a bit. About ten minutes before I ended it they both flopped near each other. I force snuggles them before I ended it because I had to leave for a sports practice. At first I thought this was a fluke- how could they possibly get along the first time after fighting so much? It wasn’t a fluke at all. There was no chasing the next day so I added in a litter box, Water dish, and toys. They shared and were in for about 8 hours. The next day and day after I did the same. Then I had my mom sleep with me and we took turns to make sure there was no fighting whilst one of us was asleep.
      I don’t know how this worked but they’re literally acting like they’ve known each other forever and are great at sharing their veggies. Thank you for the advice I just wanted to share my story.

    Just wondering if you think age is a factor. I have two males (both neutered) one is 9 months old and the other just 8 months old. They show many positive signs still and have done previously so we tried the dating method. However it didn't work out and I'm wondering whether I should keep their runs/hutches in close proximity and just wait until they are more mature. Any advice would be great 🙂

      I would definitely recommend keeping them next to each other, and wait until the teenager stage eases a bit. Try again once they’re older, and I’d skip the dating method this time, go straight in with 24/7. If you don’t have time for full 24/7 you can try doing a 24/7 weekend from Friday night to Sunday night, and then do evening dates if you have to work in the day. Just make sure that once you start they can always see each other and lie next to each other through the grill pens for snuggles through the bars.

    Hi! Hopefully you’ll read my questions before I start rebonding.
    I’m in the same situation right now. I have 2 male rabbits. Found out at the vet. Everyone says that the two will never get along anymore. Rehoming is not a solution for us. Both are 5 months and fixed. Last one got fixed 2 weeks ago.
    I have seen your video a couple of time now. The more I see the more I understand. But 1 thing remains unclear for me. When the bunny’s are ready to go back tot their enclosure (where they used to live) do I have to renew the things? For example they have a thick kind of doormat to walk/sleep on. Should buy new ones? I have to clean the entire area with vinegar. Diluted?
    If I take them for a ride. What if a fight breaks out in the box itself? This freaks me out although I also think that they might be so stressed and distracted that a fight might not even pop up.
    And last but not least: thank you! This video is a guideline for me!!

    I just feel sorry for them being so long in such a small space... :( But maybe its worth it in the long run. Our rabbits got to move into a big outside pen (very secure built) 28 squaremeters big, and they got along very well. It was a female and a neutered male. The only bad thing was the heat that was a bit dangerous for them and stressful for us. I would suggest bonding in a neutral but very big (as big as the space they will have in the the future) and nice place where they can relax, eat and explore. :D

      hello! unfortunately, bonding bunnies in a large space too early on in the process can lead to the bunnies marking their own territory. this behavior can lead to many many other aggressive and territorial behaviors for most bunnies and would make the process incredibly difficult. we may feel bad for keeping our bunnies for a small space during the process but we need to remember that it’s better for them in the future!

I thought it was hormones (they were neautered around this time) but now I'm wondering if it coincided with them moving from outside to inside....the hutch would have been smaller whereas inside they were given half a room. Half the time they will still eat together, go in the litter tray together and sleep together but one bunny has started chasing when it is time for pellets and requests for grooming go ignored quite a lot....I'm hoping it will settle down but if not I will try some of your tips x

    I would appreciate any insight/advice:
    I have 2 lops that are about a year & a half, both spayed. They’ve had 2 prior fight and rebondings. They lived separately in x-pens next to one another for months and seemed content- would kiss and cuddle through the bars so I decided to try another rebond session. I had them in a neutral territory and 24/7 bonded them for a week. They were absolutely perfect: sharing food & grooming and cuddling, so I moved them back in to where their permanent home would be. I sanitized the area and sprayed everything with vinegar water. 3 days together and still doing great. I left to run errands and came back hrs later to them cuddling but there was a mess of fur all over the enclosure. Upon inspection, one had bite marks and some bald patches on her back that I put a little neosporin on.
    I am at a loss and don’t really know how to move forward with them. For now they will be in separate xpens again until the wounds heal up.
    I’m not sure if I should jump back in trying to bond them again straight away. I have them on my lap together as I type this but I could really use some help w/ what I can maybe try next or any advice from people with similar experiences.
    I know they love each other and I want them to be as happy as possible

    We have two male rabbits. Bunny 1 was very dominat at first. They were both able to share a large bunny condo with multiple levels for a couple months. We had got bunny 2 neutered and everything was still well. I came home from work one day where there was bunny fur everywhere. I immediately separated the two of them. We then got bunny 1 neutered. They still fight or nip at each other if they are near each other. There are very few times that they actually will give a kiss, sniff or allow the other one to lay outside of their cage without anything happening. I was switching them from one another's cages to allow them to smell the other scents. They will eat near each other then become aggressive a few minutes later. We are just not sure where to go from here...

    • @DaniCavenderHandley
      @DaniCavenderHandley  3 года назад

      Hi Alli, sorry you’re going through this! I would suggest a couple of things in addition to the stuff in the video. 1. Stop switching the bunnies from cage to cage. Each bun will feel very territorial about their space, and switching who owns what will cause problems. Instead, set their cages up next to each other and only swap litter trays or blankets/towels from cage to cage to get them familiar. 2. Don’t let them see the other one out of their cage running around. The bun still in the cage will be jealous. Instead, let them out separately, in a different room. For example, our buns lived separately but side by side in the hall, and we let them into the living room one at a time and shut the door so the other couldn’t see them. 3. Patience is king! Give them plenty of time next to each other and don’t be tempted to rush to the next stage at the first signs of positive behaviour. Instead, wait until you aren’t seeing any negatives any more and keep them entirely separate until then. Best of luck!

    • @DaniCavenderHandley
      @DaniCavenderHandley  3 года назад +3

      Hi both of you, I hope this can help.
      1. You must have both bunnies neutered before you try to bond them
      2. It sounds to me that your established bunnies are still a bit young to be going through something like this - 4 months to 12 months is bunny teenage years when they’re already all over the place emotionally and behaviourally.
      Therefore my suggestion is that for the next three months, they live next to each other in separate pens, so that they can see and smell each other all the time but cannot get near each other. Let them keep their individual litter trays but swap everything else between the two of them - blankets, toys etc.
      Until you see them choosing to lie near each other, do not progress.
      My final thing to say is more for anyone else who hasn’t already got a friend for their bunny:
      The best pairs are a neutered boy and a neutered girl. Also, do not purchase your second bun - instead go with your rabbit to a rescue centre and let them help in the decision making around who you add to the family. Oftentimes they will have instant reactions (good and bad) to different bunnies, and it can save you a lot of heart ache later on.

    • @DaniCavenderHandley
      @DaniCavenderHandley  3 года назад +6

      No, I didn’t. And this was one of the hardest parts mentally, because you do feel guilt, keeping them confined. The reason I didn’t was that each time you move them to a new space, like an exercise run, you’re introducing a new territory for them to argue over, and if you were to separate them to exercise one at a time, you’ll undo your hard work. Instead, keep them together and let the opportunity to roam and exercise come when they’re progressing to having a larger space.

    We have two bunnies we are trying to bond. One is a female holland lop and the other is a female lion head. We have been doing table bonding, and the lop is grooming the lion head, but then she will start to mount. Any ideas to stop this? And will the lion head groom the lop eventually?

    • @DaniCavenderHandley
      @DaniCavenderHandley  7 месяцев назад +1

      Mounting can be a bonding behaviour and therefore just let it happen. However if the pair aren’t spayed (even though they’re the same sex) then you will really struggle. I’d strongly advise you stop trying to bind them until both spayed and then try again 2 months after the surgery.
      If they’re already spayed and therefore there isn’t a hormonal driver for it, just let it happen - it can be a dominance behaviour. I’d only intervene if the other bunny is distressed by it or if she’s humping the other bunny’s head. It can happen and no one wants a bite on the undercarriage!

    I recently got a 2 months old lion head female bunny (Hera) I already have a neutered 1.5 years old male bunny (Beci). I saw that my boy started to behave more and more aggressive. But the thing is, it started after recovering from neutering but before getting my girl. He bites, growls, runs towards my hand, always pees on my bed. I’ve NEVER hit him, i tried to give Beci enough space to run (he had a playpen in my room but he chewed it a lot and always found a way to jump out -i had to put him in for the night cause he peed everywhere on my bed and my bed only - so i moved him out to the hallway which is 15m2 - ).
    When I first introduced them to each other Beci immediately groomed Hera and wanted to be with her even though Hera was really shy. Later that day he suddenly started to growl and jump on her. They were not kept together from the start just for a few minutes to feel the other’s presence. Three weeks passed and nothing has changed. Hera’s personality started to show: she’s really outgoing and initiative with Beci but he always attacks.
    (my bunnies are free roaming)
    Any ideas or helping tips? I feel really lost:(

    • @DaniCavenderHandley
      @DaniCavenderHandley  3 года назад +1

      The first thing to say is that although neutering will help with Beci’s behaviour, it won’t do much in terms of lessening his “teenager phase” which can last until he’s about 2 years old. Unfortunately, it’s just a case of bunny proofing, giving him lots of varied enrichment and waiting for him to grow out of it. Also, if he was only recently neutered, he will still have hormones in his system, and they’ll take a while to dissipate.
      The next thing to say is that unless Hera is spayed, she will still provoke an aggressive masculine response from Beci. Both bunnies need to be neutered and fully healed (2 months post surgery in most cases) before you attempt to bond them.
      In the meantime, keep them apart and make sure that both get plenty of things to keep their minds busy. This needn’t be expensive. A cardboard box with two rabbit-sized holes in it can keep them excited for hours. Additionally, make them use their brains to get food in order to stimulate them and lessen their destructive behaviour. For example, fold in the ends of loo roll tubes, and fill with pellets so they have to bash or chew the tubes to get the treat. Hope this helps and good luck 🤞🏻

      I did the first time, but that was a mistake and resulted in Peanuts injury. If you’re still having to intervene sometimes, don’t leave them if you can avoid it. We managed it by doing shifts - my husband would sit with them while I was elsewhere. But if you live alone my advice would be to leave them for as short a time as possible. If you’ve had to put them in a “time out” then you can move them around with you, but if they’re getting on well in the pen, leave them where they are. Also, if you have to leave the room, leave all doors open so you can hear clearly and try to be gone for under 15mins

Last week when she was able to be reintegrated they started fighting. The one with the broken leg was the submissive one originally and now she seems to be very aggressive. I want to try the 24/7 method.

      If they aren’t spayed, and they are now around 4 months old, that’s the prime time for them to start fighting as their hormones kick in. Add in the fact that they’ve been separated due to the broken leg and I’m not surprised they’ve fallen out and you are seeing fighting and bite. Here is my advice: 1. Keep them separated and get them both spayed ASAP. 2. Wait for 2 months until they’re fully healed and their hormones die down. Keep them living next to each other but separated during this time. Stop swapping them from pen to pen, and instead just swap things like blankets to share the smells. 3. Do not try putting them together until they’ve relaxed next to each other (watch the clips from my video for an example) even if that takes longer than the 2 months for their hormones to subside.
      4. At that point, try the 24/7 method.

      Thanks Danielle! We bought what we believed to be a pair of females but after watching several videos I think they might be males which makes me sad. I am going to take them to the vet tomorrow to see if they will verify the sex for me but I had tried to put them together yesterday and there was some humping going on and when I lifted the bunny up there was something red coming out of its body so I'm assuming it's a male 😢

      @@DaniCavenderHandley they are boys 😭 one of them got neutered today and the other one goes in on Friday to be neutered. The vet said give them four weeks before reintroducing them... So now we wait! I really hope that after being completely apart and in separate rooms for that long they forget that they ever fought and can be friends.

      My parents aren't helping and being understanding they think that the bond will happen overtime on its own. But I know it won't Bec when they see eachother it's like they want to kill eachother too

      @@sabrinarobenek6607 their hormones are kicking in. They really need to be kept separated at this time. You can keep them side by side but with a divider with either a gap or nose guard so that they can see and smell each other but not be able to bite or scratch. This will have to last until 8 weeks after spaying then you can start the bonding procedure. It is very dangerous to try and bond at this time. It is also dangerous to leave them unspayed as females are prone to uterus cancers. For really good advice I can not recommend enough for you to try the Rabbit Bonding Advice Group on Facebook they are currently helping me with preparing to bond my 6 bunnies. It is a private group but you should have no problem joining as the welfare of rabbits is their main goal. Wishing you the best of luck in your adventure with your fur babies.

    I have a female rabbit . She’s been a single rabbit for a year now . She’s super aggressive. So I adopted another female as per vets suggestion as a male might dominate . But that didn’t go well . I tried to bond them. The new bunny was so calm I felt my rabbit will hurt her. My rabbit ended up biting me real bad. So I decided to return the new bunny back in order to prevent further damage. I got so overwhelmed and stressed with the whole process I had to cry to keep calm. It’s so stressful to do it alone . Especially with aggressive rabbit. I don’t know if I did the right thing by returning it back . I feel my rabbit can’t get along. She s very rebellious. But i’m also worried about her . Does anyone else have a rebellious bunny ?

      Yes! I had my boy for a year on his own so I decided to get a girlfriend to keep him company but he is jealous when I’ve got her smell on me. I am trying to bond them but I still have to go to school so I can’t do 24/7 bonding. He can get a bit aggressive but I’m very scared one of them will get hurt

      Yes I have two male rabbits. I brought them 4 months ago and Initially when I brought them they were as happy as they could. They used to sleep together, eat together, groom each other, play together and give each other company. They were free roam bunnies. But as soon as their hormone kicked in after 3 months of happy bonding, they became so aggressive and were showing territorial behaviours. They sprayed everywhere. One night when I was sleeping suddenly I heard some scuffing and I discovered blood and fur on the floor. My one rabbit had injured the other one in the neck and ear. From that day till today, it's been almost 3 weeks now, they're sperated. One stays outside free roaming while the other stays in the enclosure. And vice versa. I keep changing them alternatively after every 1:30 - 2 hours. So that they can free roam. I tried Bonding them almost 2-3 times but nothing happened. This made me stressed and I used to cry out of frustration. But now I have accepted the fact that it's useless to try Bonding them again for the time being. I'll try again after few months. They sit close to each other and can smell each other and see each other. Staying in separate enclosures. My mental health is as important as my bunnies. I don't want any more stress. I love my bunnies and they're happy. I'll try again after few months.

    Rabbits need a lot of space and places to hide while bonding. The small box made them frustrated and deprived of freedom.

    Hi danielle! Do you have any tips on bonding 3 bunnies? I have 2 spayed buns, and 1 neutered bun. I’ve succesfully bonded the females, but was unsuccesful with the only male.. as one dominant female always fighting with the male that also seems want to be the dominant one, and the fight was nasty :(
    Now i just separate them in 2 different areas with a boundary. One night the boundary got loose so they both meet and fight. I tried the dating method which was unsuccesful, but i’m too scared to try the 24/7 method since everytime they meet they had a big fight, i don’t want both to be hurt..
    Any advice would be great.. and thanks for the video! 🤍

      That’s lovely to hear. However have you considered taking your existing bunny with you to a shelter or rescue centre to help choose a new companion? Many shelters will help you with the bonding process and you will be able to make sure your new bunny is a good fit for your current pet.
