  • There are roughly 393 different kinds of parrots in the world, but today's #BringingTheZooToYou chat is focused on two specific kinds. Major Mitchell's cockatoo and the golden conure. Let's learn a bit more about these beautiful birds and find out what makes parrots so special. Leave a question in the comments below and we'll do our best to answer it during the chat. Thanks for hanging out with #BrookfieldZoo today as we #BringTheZooToYou!

      While Wilson does look a bit ‘odd’, we do not clip his wing feathers at all. He has chronically abnormal but stable plumage, which we have been managing since he arrived at Brookfield Zoo in 2009.

    WHY DOES Wilson have red under his wings

  • @TaraAndFriends
    @TaraAndFriends 4 года назад

    Why the heck did you butcher his wings?? They are beautiful creatures that are born with them. If you can't live with the wings, don't get a bird!! It butchers their self-confidence. And when they try to fly, and fall, they can get injurd. And if their wing feathers grow in a little more, they will still be able to fly. You shouldn't have birds if you are going to clip their wings. Please stop this horrible, sad practice!! A bird needs to fly in order to stay healthy. Galahs can actually get tumors from extra fat, and they can die from them. This will discourage and mentally harm them. If you want to keep your gorgeous yellow birdie safe, train it to fly by placing him on a perch, and calling him to you. Start a few inches from him, and increase it until he can fly across the room. Once he does that, start calling him from lower and higher places, doing boomrangs (where you call them back mid-flight, after letting them fly to the perch, creating a boomrang or u-shaped effect), call him from another room to fly to you, and teach him what windows are. This should take roughly a month to a few months, depending on age, whether he was clipped, and his personality. He was clipped, so it will take longer. You people frustrate me when you mentally, and perhaps physically, torture a bird like that. They can get really hurt from a fall! But if flighted, they can catch themselves or soften their landing, or because they will be better balanced, they won't fall in the first place. You really are doing more harm than good. Truly. I know you are trying to keep him safe, but that is NOT the right way to do it. I know you think it doesn't hurt, because they can't feel the pain in their feathers, just like we can't feel when our hair is cut, but those birds will greatly lose confidence in themselves, and will be depressed and confused. Please, please stop tormenting your bird, for his sake. You can contact Jamieleigh and her husband from BirdTricks to learn more, or you can watch their youtube channel, 10 years in the running. They know a lot about birds, how to care for them, and how to train them. You can even ask them to help you train- what was the yellow one's name, again? Jasper? They will help you understand the importance of leaving them flighted, and teach you how to train him safely. You need to not trim his wings again, ever, as it is very bad for them. You should not be training them if you can't train them how to fly safely. Please, for your beautiful bird, listen and stop what you are doing to his poor wings. It looks so sad and ugly how butchered and short they are, such a pretty bird should not have to endure that internal pain.

      We completely understand your concern, and we do not clip any of our birds' wings here at Brookfield Zoo. Many of the birds that we house at Wild Encounters came to us with medical issues; for instance, our birds of prey and turkey vulture were all found injured in the wild and unable to be released after rehabilitation. Wilson unfortunately has chronically abnormal but stable plumage, which we have been managing since he arrived at Brookfield Zoo in 2009.
