When I was under 100 hours of tf2 I used scrap and stuff like an idiot to craft shit Also you can still get hats from random drops so in terms of profiting you can get a donation from the game at random Update: Learned you can get things like description tags and other things like that as well
Tbh, i usually get keys/buy a few keys trade for ref and craft hats. I just like to have a cosmetic that i crafted, i just dont care about trade or profit. I just like to craft thats it :)
The one thing I think is always in the favor of crafting hats is that it is completely free with no need to work around prices to get a decent hat, it might be a bit luck based, but set hats can almost be guaranteed depending on the set hat you are crafting for, so if you want to be the milk then you can.
It becomes a sort of logical loop; If using refined metal for crafting isn't worth it, then it has no value outside of trading but If it has no other value then nobody is going to want it, which means it becomes worthless and you might as well use it to craft, which means it has some value again.
I'm not a trader and sometimes I like to take a gamble when crafting a hat I got the bearded bombider (a cosmetic I desperately wanted) and made small profit. Sometimes spinning the wheel is fun
Top craft #37 collector here, can confirm craft number collectors should usually not be a consideration. The scene is extremely small, and you're likely gonna have 1 person on the planet who cares about that specific hat or number, and chances are you'll end up making a bit more, but not exactly a fortune. The market is so niche that you kind of are at the whim of the literal 1 guy who is interested.

I also remember when the game would drop more weapons/hats along side a shit ton of crates so you had a chance of getting ref to either trade or craft hats with. 90-95% of the time I only get crates now. You're just fucked unless you keep the game running 24 hours a day and are in one of those idle servers.

One issue, valve doesn’t really care about the hat economy. I would say crafting hats is more like mining than gambling. Hats will always cost 3 refined to craft, so market conditions can get to a state where crafting hats and rebuilding headgear is absolutely worth it. Also, rebuilding extra Halloween headgear is worth it because you can’t even sell them.
[Deleted] if an ingredient can’t be traded, than the result can’t as well. People tend to get quite a bit of Halloween cosmetics, so rebuilding is a way to get other cosmetics when you have duplicate Halloween cosmetics. It is worth it in the sense of collecting cosmetics to wear.
You could have crafted more hats if you bought a bunch of craft hats off scrap.tf, (1.33-1.44 per hat) and then just recrafted them (you would have made about 112 hats at 2.66 each instead of 100 hats at 3 ref each) 🤷🏻♂️
The possible hats you can craft on the wiki is 432 atm. But this is so far off. Summer 2013, winter 2013, specific crate hats and some promo hats can also be crafted wich are missing on the wiki. After crafting about 500 hats I ended up with about half being non duplicates. For anyone wondering about profits, I only check once during this. 630 refined got me 498 refined of hat value

I feel like crafting hats is a good way for new people to get *some* cosmetics, regardless of "rarity". 1 key = 1 chest opening = 1 cosmetic, OR 1 key = (now) 70 ref = 23 hats. Some of my favorite cosmetics are craftable, too, and they can inspire outfits that you can get if you wanna spend some more.
as someone with less than 50 hours at this point, and can care less about if I don’t profit, just crafting hats can just help me get some pretty cool loadouts

I actually sold 2 dollars worth of tickets and changed them to ref to buy stuff I liked. Then I just said fuck it and crafted hats and I wasn't expecting anything and out of the 30 ref I used I was happy for the craft hats. I got decently no duplicates and it was a mix of new and old hats which was interesting.

Everyone would be using refined desperately trying to get the first 100 of that hat because, as we all know, the first 100 of a craft hat have that number in the name. It’s a rare thing that everyone would want, so the amount of refined metal floating around would drop significantly, thus making refined harder to come by, making it more valuable, thus lowering the cost of keys. I’ve been thinking this for years at this point because I think I started trading when keys were like 28 refined and I stopped trading around when keys were like 54. The price of a key just cracked 70, which is asinine.
Doing The math if you used rebuild head gear by buying craft hats worth 1.22 ref and use em to rebuild headgear you save half a ref on each craft after some calculation i found out you can craft The same amount of headgear he did but for 50 ref cheaper meaning that after you get the same luck as him you're profit turns out to be more than 2 Keys makeing crafteing craft hats very profitabile correct me if aim wromg
Rebuild headgear makes you money if you put in all hats below HALF their average price. The expected value is indeed the average price, and you are putting in less than that. If you made 100 hats totaling 320ref we can assume the average hat is 3,2 ref, hence you can use the rebuild headgear function on anything below 1,5 ref and you are likely to be profitable in the long term
In the scream fortress event you can get free cosmetics, you can rebuild those into into non scream fortress only cosmetics but it's not tradable from what i remember

Everyone would be using refined desperately trying to get the first 100 of that hat because, as we all know, the first 100 of a craft hat have that number in the name. It’s a rare thing that everyone would want, so the amount of refined metal floating around would drop significantly, thus making refined harder to come by, making it more valuable, thus lowering the cost of keys. I’ve been thinking this for years at this point because I think I started trading when keys were like 28 refined and I stopped trading around when keys were like 54. The price of a key just cracked 70, which is asinine.
Doing The math if you used rebuild head gear by buying craft hats worth 1.22 ref and use em to rebuild headgear you save half a ref on each craft after some calculation i found out you can craft The same amount of headgear he did but for 50 ref cheaper meaning that after you get the same luck as him you're profit turns out to be more than 2 Keys makeing crafteing craft hats very profitabile correct me if aim wromg

Rebuild headgear makes you money if you put in all hats below HALF their average price. The expected value is indeed the average price, and you are putting in less than that.
If you made 100 hats totaling 320ref we can assume the average hat is 3,2 ref, hence you can use the rebuild headgear function on anything below 1,5 ref and you are likely to be profitable in the long term
In the scream fortress event you can get free cosmetics, you can rebuild those into into non scream fortress only cosmetics but it's not tradable from what i remember
After this video, i went to craft 2 hats. 1 of them is xeno suit(4.3 ref) the other is hong kong cone(11ref). So thanks for the video, i made quite a profit
