I´m german and its so funny, that the 7vsWild Nalgene Bottle Challenge found its way to you. Even Böker and UG-Tools (another german knife maker with very innovative stuff) made custom knives for this show. Böker made a fixed blade (like a short bronco) and a multitool SAK-style and UG Tools made a fixed blade where you can disassemble the handle from the blade.
I like using the victorinox can opener for pistachios! The small screwdrivier fits perfectly in even the not so cracked open shells! A little twist and viola!
Buck 110 has been with me for over fifty years in the outdoors of Colorado camping, fishing hunting and everyday use my buddy used his as a hammer on occasions 18:48
Amen to a Victorinox Cadet-X. I love my Cadet but more routinely carry my Rambler because of the scissors. When you consider the amount of function per size, the Rambler is amazing but it would be nice to have the same toolset in a slightly larger package. A Cadet-X would be perfect.
Victorinox used to have scissors for the 84mm frame, but apparently the machine died and was too expensive to repair, so they discontinued all 84mm models with scissors. Which sadly means a Cadet X most likely won't happen. 😔
I carried the ESEE 3 for years. Great EDC! I then switched to the Lionsteel M2M. I now EDC the Buck Alpha Hunter in the sheath from the Lionsteel because it's scout style carry, and the Buck fits into it. I carry my blade at 9:30-10:00 on my belt because my pistol is at 3:30
The best way to crack walnuts open is to penetrate a knife tip into the soft spot at the junction of the two half shells at the bottom of the walnut and pry the nut open with a 90° twist. It works so well, I even prefer this technique over a dedicated nut cracker. Works with any knife, no need for a particularly strong or tough blade. I am doing it all the time with a Victorinox and it doesn't harm the blade tip at all. Works with walnuts only though, because they crack apart along the seem of the shell. For hazelnuts I would suggest a plier based multitool or something with an impact point at the pummel.
@@jacquesmoreau6516 For English walnuts I agree. Doing that with black walnuts is just going to get you a sore hand (and no cracked walnuts). Of course trying the 'pry open with knife blade' method mentioned previously with black walnuts is probably just going to result in a knife blade with the tip broken off, stabbing oneself in the hand or both (and no cracked walnuts). The best tool for cracking black walnuts is a hammer.
For 7vsWild I think I'd choose a multi tool and either a Mora 120, or go the simple route and just pack a mora 107 blade to craft into a knife in the field! Those smaller Moras are fantastic at carving, slice better than the regular ones, and you can get a lot of leverage on that smaller blade before its damaged vs a bigger blade.
You never want to shove anything into a hole because like DCA said, it could get stuck. You wanna make sure it slides in nicely, don’t force it, so you can get whatever you put in there out unscathed.
I had a hard time believing that a 4Max Scout wouldn't fit inside my wide-mouth Nalgenes... it does, with slight resistance, but not nearly so much resistance that you'd feel like your forcing anything. Comes back out just as easy. No risk of deformation to the Nalgene. 3 Nalgenes, 3 different materials including the stiffer Lexan, same results. I was expecting it to have a little bit of clearance though.
16:26 Question: One of the reasons I prefer a folder to a fixed blade is I'm concerned about the draw and sheathing. With a folder, it's in and out of the front pocket, super easy, super safe (especially tip-up and retained by the clip). But with a discreetly carried fixed blade, I'd be worried about cutting my chunky love-handle on the draw, and much more when trying to get it back in the scabbard. Am I just overthinking or paranoid? And what do you suggest for the cautiously fixed-blade-curious like myself (maybe also with a 5 o'clock "something else")?
You are definitely overthinking it. A folder offers so many more ways to injure yourself than a fixed blade. You should never be trying to draw or sheath a knife without proper caution.
Something to consider is that bottle kits are sold as emergency kits with other fire and first aid stuff inside. Some of those folders just take up too much space.
I eat pistachios all the time. I use my Victorinox EvoGrip 18 to crack open the stubborn shells. I use the large screwdriver bottle opener combo tool. If the crack is really small, I use the can opener tool. If the pistachio has no opening, I use a pair of pliers the crack the shell. Hope that helps! Keep up the great work David.
Hello DCA and team, you're all great! Question: *What knife should we give the astronauts who are planning to go to Mars?* Would it be a fixed blade or folder? Enlighten us, oh great one!
I see alot of "Survival knives are fixed blade ONLY" comments, and in general, i would agree that were i building a general situation survival kit for my area and specific concerns and conditions, yes, I would opt for a fixed blade every time. BUT...given that this is a tailor made kit for a planned "survival" situation of a known period of time, opting for the most cutting edge in a folder with a known strong lock and pivot starts making more sense. Particularly something slim like the Benchmade Adamas that was shown, or even the CS Pocket Bushman if gloves are permitted as these would free up a small but useful amount of space in a bottle to cram more items into it. I know many Alone contestants opted for a multitool over a belt knife and easily surpassed 2 weeks, BUT they also had a saw and/or axe to cover "big" work, and i just dont see either of those items fitting in that bottle. Still, if you practice with one and learn how to work with its strengths and around its weaknesses, a multitool can punch way above its weight. Whichever way you go, your choice is only as useful as the skills you have gained in using it, trying different methods of accomplishing similar tasks, and the toolbox of knowledge you carry in your head.
I would definitely go with a izula in the nalgene bottle. I would shave the sheath down like the falkniven has so it's just a plastic slip for the knife.
Victorinox Ranger would be my choice by far. A saw and the other multiple use tools would make a single blade inferior. I have found the Cold Steel Finnwolf to be an outstanding, Scandi grind folder for the money. Very solid quality.
As I'm sure DCA is aware, Victorinox hasn't manufactured scissors for the 84 mm platform in a very long time, and from what I understand, no longer has the machinery, so for them to make a Cadet X, as so many of us have implored them to do, would take a major investment in a new production line. My personal ask of Victorinox would be a set of two knives, both on the 93 mm Alox platform. The first would be the Bushcrafter model, which they no longer make, but consists of the large blade, the reamer, and the woodsaw, only. The second would have the small electrician's blade, an inline Phillips, the caplifter, and the scissors, only. The second knife is everything I need while in civilization, the first knife is the tools that I only need in the backcountry, so in town, I'd carry the second, and in the woods, I'd carry both. I'd like them to be either plain silver Alox, ir Type III hard anodized black Alox.
HI David, when it come to chopping There are too many options, axes, machetes Kukri, big hacky fixed baldes. I keep a bunch of tools (foldingshovel/folding saw/batterypack jumper) in my car incase of emergency or yardwork/odd chores. If you had a blade/tool that I could keep in my car that would be able to chop and slice, take a beating and could stay in my car year round (north midwest). Bonus points if it looks cool! Thanks love the channel!
Hey DCA, you talk about outdoor and survival essentials often. You talk lots about about hard working knives and tactical knives. I edc a knife every day and rotate the kit depending on what the day holds, but most of the time I find that a utility blade/pry bar combo takes care of all of my tape cutting, package opening and messy every day tasks. I prefer to keep my folders a little cleaner and sharper . This time of year I find that one of the most pleasing knife tasks is so slice up a fresh apple outside on a nice day. I love a thin, slicey and stainless blade over 3" for the job and I think a new Boker slip joint coming out soon might be the nail in the "coffin" for me! What folder would you choose?
For handle comfort, why not the AD-10? Also, since you mentioned Alone, what 10 items would you take? Obviously, some of it is dependant on location, game availability, and fishing options, but let's assume it will be cold but you can hunt, trap, fish, or gill net anything you want. Would you bring a gill net? A survival shovel? A multitool with wire cutters? I know some people avoid certain items for various reasons. But for big game, some people love bringing a bow. For smaller game, some people like bringing trapping wire or even a slingshot. If you are using fishing hooks, im a big fan of bringing wire cutters since we saw someone get a hook stuck in their hand and have to get evacuated. But tons of others simply refused to bring them even if they were fishing. An extra tarp? Extra rations? Just curious about your thoughts.
To EDC a fixed blade, my go to is a Lionsteel B35. It is slim, sliced, but with a bushcraft capable Sleipner blade. I beat the heck out of this thing battening and even battening through oak, mesquite and other knotty hard words have never has a chip or roll... and with the custom leather sheath I made for it, I can drop it in a pants pocket and even in most khakis, only 2 inches or so of the handle stick out... Light, thin and easy to carry. But to add to the nut cracking question, take the knife and strike the nut with the exposed tang at the back. Crack right down the middle.
Also as far as questions go I wish there was a way to filter folding knives on the website by type of pivot whether the knife runs on washers or bearings. Maybe it's on there now but just haven't seen it. So how about what are the coolest work or carry knives that use phosphor bronze washers?
Variant of your look once cut twice. The Maxpedition carrying case became my "small toiletry kit" for when I go camping etc. I can roll up a usable towel to go into the bottom. Put a facecloth into the top. I hide a USB cable between the two, for a just in case situation. In the outer pouch, toothpaste, toothbrush, soap and shampoo, travel TP can fit in as well. No razors, no lotions, no extras, just the basics I need if I am going out for just a weekend not knowing what there will be.
The season 3 of 7 vs wild took place in Vancouver Island, Canada. they had one plastic Nalgene bottle wich they could fill with everything that fits in. one nalgene bottle were for a team of two for 2 weeks. 7 teams in total.
DCA and Thomas, best first fixie for a long-time folder carrier? Prefer a softer sheath (leather?) or smaller, since I don't need Tek-Lok compatability. Probably smaller as I have smaller than avg sized hands, and I'm not accustomed to a fixed blade hanging around.
Hi Knife center crew. Love the content, thank you. I just started considering a larger knife, for my collection. Began a search and research. Did I just get my inner steel snob shook to the core? Everything I read puts 8Cr13MoV statistically ahead of 1095. Specifically, comparing models in the Schrade frontier series (their own 1095 and 8Cr versions) and Esee. Huge $$ between Schrade and Esee, not to call out either brand, just budget constraints in play vs knife desire. Why the hate for 8Cr, short of source? How do statistics on a page stack against in field performance? Long winded but looking forward to your level headed walk through. Thanks.
I’m looking for a new EDC under $200 that has the most satisfying clicks. I’m talking both sound-wise and the feel of the action. My preferred blade length is around 3.5 inches, but a little bigger or smaller is not a huge deal. Maybe a weird request, but I’d like to know what you think.
Hey DCA! I regularly carry a leatherman charge TTi plus on my belt and a SAK SD in my watch pocket. What other SAK or tool based knife would you recommend to compliment the tool set I already have with these two?
Hi David, SOG customer service did not answer my question. Will the scissors from the SOG Powerlock fit on the SOG PowerAccess Deluxe, somehow? I do not have the SOG PowerAccess Deluxe.
Hey DCA, I've been collecting knives for many years and have lots of 'em. That's great but I've begun running out of room to store them all. I keep them in my downstairs man-room so one solution I came up with is to use magnets to attach them to the exposed ductwork in my basement. My question is: Am I inadvertently damaging my knives by storing them magnetically? Please let me know your thoughts on the topic. As an aside, having a show based on storage tips and techniques might be a good idea! Thanks! All Blessings, Father Mark
DCA - I share your Victorinox wishes. The new model - the Companion does give us this dream of scissors and a real file (parcel hook files don't count) but that new tool in place of the can opener seems dubious - in addition to my love of a 3d philips driver. My perfect knife would be the Super Tinker with the Cadet file in place of the small blade. I would take plastic or alox scales - if you are reading the comments Victorinox.
Hi DCA, I love going on long solo canoe trips. I have a bunch of knives but none do everything for me. What would be a good river knife, preferably a fixed blade, that I could attach to my PFD and use for a multitude of camping and river-related tasks? Danke.
Hello there. I Saw the New spydercos and i find the native chief salt pretty cool. There are two versions at the same price, one in lc200n and one in magnacut. Why would one choose lc200n over magnacut ? Thanks very much
As a boy scout i need a swiss army knife with two blades saw bottle opener can opener a file a pliers a awl and scissors what model would you recommend (i did not found one yet)
Hi DCA. I fish a lot and some spots are hard to access/overgrown. Can you recommend a good tool for the job? I don’t plan on chopping through any thick branches. A belt sheath that can be used one handed would be ideal so I don’t need to drop my rods/net. I’d like something with some good reach that’s got more speed than mass. Price $150 or less. Thanks!
Unfortunately I think the adamas from all the videos I have watched would be a no -go for lock fail in a survival situation. Which is strange considering my persidio ii doesn't suffer from the same problem I think it may be a design flaw. See lock fail in light baton videos, but I full agree with the triad lock for survival on the cold steel sr1.
DCA, I’ve been pining to buy a knife in Spyderco’s K390 steel for quite some time. Now that Spyderco is coming out with a number of MagnaCut knives, I’m really at a loss for how these 2 steels compare. Isn’t MagnaCut the clear cut winner? Why would someone choose K390 instead? Please explain and advise. Thank you and keep up the good work.
Hi Dave. Love your shows. Topic: Leather Sheaths. I have a couple of Fixed blades that I've been trying to find leather sheaths for but it's been very difficult because the sheath makers don't tell you what size blade will fit. They don't even give you a range. I've checked on sheath websites, Amazon and Ebay. Am I missing something? With your expertise, please help. The Kydex on the larger knives is too hard and bulky because I like to carry them in my pocket verses on my belt or pocket clip. I have a Tops 105E and Halfbreed LBK. Larger knives that I like to have leather sheaths for. Thank you.
Hey DCA and crew, I'm looking a for a fixed blade that I can carry cross draw scout style on the front. I do leather work, so sheaths are not the issue (I would copy the Bradford Guardian 3 sheath). No price limit, but the more compact the better as I would be carrying a back pack with a belt. I want something that will handle small bush craft and most general small camp tasks. Thanks!
I want to buy my nephew his first Victorinox knife what would be you pick , I do want a full size blade & One of the biggest things I can’t decide on is alox or just the classic red . Thanks so much!!!
If the Elementum had a flat or convex grind instead of a hollow grind, I'd have bought one, but a hollow ground knife is weaker than it could have been.
Awesome stuff! DCA which fixed blades would you recommend for a do it all camp knife that can also be efficient in butchering game? Sorta of a mountain man kinda knife? Thanks.
this is a trick question, because putting a kit INSIDE a water bottle is a horrendous idea at all. I have said this 1000 times, and shown several options, including a couple of water bottle bag kits. the issue is if you are putting your gear in the bottle 1) you are not putting any water in the bottle, and 2) you have no way to carry your stuff once you DO try to put water in. also, aside fro the included pouch on a bottle bag, you also have the option to add things to the molle webbing on the outside of the bag.
DCA, it was great meeting you at Blade Show West. Thanks for the tips on the scales. I am looking for a knife to be used for food prep/cooking/post cooking, essentially all around kitchen knife, while camping. Benchmade has their Station Knife which seems suitable, but is a little expensive. I was wondering if there were any knives that are less expensive and would be good, similarly shaped, alternatives?
Hey david. I've been looking at some videos on the Leatherman Arc and so far none have addressed the grind on the blade compared to the free series blade in regards slicing ability. Can you help me out?
Dca I have a couple bear edge knives that I got through a monthly box deal....I like both a lot, even though I discovered they're both in the under $50 range. I know you've done under $50 budget knives, but how good are they really?
the rule is one bottle for two with the items you need for survive ! modified opinel number 12 with an saw blade in the knife ! and an bushmaster bantam for an fixed blade !
Hay dca I've been trying to find the serrated version of the Spyderco ark online but I can't find it anywhere do you know someplace I might be able to find one ?
NUT KNIFE ANSWER: the only answer is the Swiss Army knife can opener tool. It is absolutely perfect for opening those tricky pistachios and peanuts that are too difficult to open with finger nails.
Aside from the deadlock, (which I can't afford) I understand that all otf knives have some shake rattle and roll (sorry, couldn't resist). EXECEPT sa/otf. 1. Is this true? 2. If so,what are some sa/otf, 3. What are the best da/otf?
The Nalgene survival kit knife is a fun thought-experiment, Mr. Andersen. I favor Cold Steel in the folder realm. However, I dislike the SR-1 - it's a sharpened prybar with a blocky handle and it doesn't cut very well. I would prefer the AD-15 in this scenario, especially with some minor modifications. It's got the S35VN steel and G-10 handle scales, just like the SR-1. The blade stock is thinner than the SR-1, but still beefy (3.8 mm/0.15 inch), so there is little risk of breaking it. It also has a higher grind than the SR-1, which combined wtih the thinner blade stock, makes it a much better cutting tool, right out of the box. It also has the advantage of the Scorpion lock, which is easily as durable as the Tri-Ad lock, but which also allows easy one-handed, finger-safe opening and closing. And of course, it has a smaller footprint and weighs significantly less (6.5 oz., vs. 7.3 oz.) than the SR-1. The major limitation of the AD-15 is that the blade is shorter (3.5 inches) than the SR-1 (4.0 inches) and the thumbstuds are pretty far forward, reducing usable cutting edge to 3.15 inches. Once you remove said thumbstuds, you've got a full 3.5 inches of actual usable cutting edge, which is very comparable to the usable cutting edge of the SR-1. And it's doable, because you don't actually NEED the thumbstuds with the Scorpion Lock. As for the nut-knife, it's definitely a not-knife. To be specific, this is where the Knipex Cobra Pliers in my EDC pocket pouch come in.
Hey, here is a question for you! You have talked about knife, sharpening systems, many times in the past, but which one would work for somebody who is blind!? I have one made by Spyderco, which I think you recommended many times, but it is challenging to use, because I cannot see the angle of the knife against the sharpener
Here's my question for the FAQ: Which knife would you recommend for slaying your annoying background music? Love the channel (otherwise). Keep up the great work.
The nalgene nazis make you leave your home and you may only pack whatever fits in your nalgene bottle. No serious, this is what we suffer in Europe daily

Knife Center should add a “finger safe” option in the lock types filter since that is such a common pro mentioned about locks

I don't know about cracking nuts but for pistacios I use the flat head screwdriver/cap lifter on any victorinox knife.
I'd like the Cold Steel Voyager. AUS10 is pretty good, but still easy to sharpen. A Victorinox large one-hand opening model would be a good idea.

I like it -DCA
I also have carried a fixed blade in college a buck were all we carried about seven of us or occasionally a bar USMC but mostly the buck 22:54
The season 3 of 7 vs wild took place in Vancouver Island, Canada. they had one plastic Nalgene bottle wich they could fill with everything that fits in. one nalgene bottle were for a team of two for 2 weeks. 7 teams in total.
@@timothymckee7693 yeah, was also my first idea 😄but what do you do on the second day?
I agree about preferring a non-serated blade on the Signal.
I have the same question and I'm really tempted by the Böker Burnley BFF as an EDC fixed. I also have lady hands.
CRKT Minimalist. I carry one horizontal on my belt. Different model to choose from. I prefer the Drop Point Blackout, or Katana. Also have a S.P.E.W.
Most serious question: What knife would you put into the Nalgene bottle if it was full of water??????
H1
LC200n
Magnacut
Boye Basic 3 dendritic cobalt
A teabag, mate! 😂
Thanks.
What folding and what fixed blade does a smurf use. With them being that outdoorsy they have to use one. Thanks for everything you all do.
The combo tool (bottle/can opener screwdriver/pry) on the Victorinox Compact is great for opening walnuts at least.
I carry an esee- 3HM. Horizontally in the front.I use it every day
DC..What fixed blade would you pick for a survival / tactical and heavy duty? Mid sized around 6 to 7 inchs. Thanks.
I would go with either of the Becker Necker knives. You would need to make a custom kydex sheath though.
Would a Knafs Lulu fit in the bottle? 100% on the stainless steel bottle!
Hey DCA! I regularly carry a leatherman charge TTi plus on my belt and a SAK SD in my watch pocket. What other SAK or tool based knife would you recommend to compliment the tool set I already have with these two?
I have an old CRKT stiff KISS I keep in my Nalgene bottle repair kit
Hi David,
SOG customer service did not answer my question. Will the scissors from the SOG Powerlock fit on the SOG PowerAccess Deluxe, somehow? I do not have the SOG PowerAccess Deluxe.
Ontario Rat 3, with the nylon sheath?
Hey DCA,
I've been collecting knives for many years and have lots of 'em.
Thanks!
All Blessings,
Father Mark
Danke.
Kizer Beluga has a 3V blade. That's the one I'd choose for the water bottle.
Go Panthers!
@@tmutant Yes, please, go Panthers! Go get a win! Pretty Please!
Thank you.
What is the best sharpener for re-profiling a fixed blade?
Hey DCA and crew, I'm looking a for a fixed blade that I can carry cross draw scout style on the front. I do leather work, so sheaths are not the issue (I would copy the Bradford Guardian 3 sheath). No price limit, but the more compact the better as I would be carrying a back pack with a belt. I want something that will handle small bush craft and most general small camp tasks. Thanks!
I want to buy my nephew his first Victorinox knife what would be you pick ,
I do want a full size blade &
One of the biggest things I can’t decide on is alox or just the classic red .
Thanks so much!!!
For a lager every day fixed blade the Civivi Elementum fixed blade needs more love. The Cold Steel Canadian belt knife is awesome too.
Thanks.
Absolutely love the nalgene idea, I own a glow in the dark one 32 oz that I literally never use.
If I can take a fixed blade I'd recommend the Mora Garberg. And ideally a steel bottle rather than plastic
this is a trick question, because putting a kit INSIDE a water bottle is a horrendous idea at all.
Check out some options here: ruclips.net/video/ll_YhMhpGRU/видео.html or here: ruclips.net/video/784XkgTcdrI/видео.html
The hammer plate on the signal should crack nuts just fine. 🐿
Izula ,perfect for said kit
Hey david.
I've been looking at some videos on the Leatherman Arc and so far none have addressed the grind on the blade compared to the free series blade in regards slicing ability. Can you help me out?
Dca
I have a couple bear edge knives that I got through a monthly box deal....I like both a lot, even though I discovered they're both in the under $50 range. I know you've done under $50 budget knives, but how good are they really?
Hey DCA, what tanto shape is all around best for edc? Reverse tanto? Japanese tanto? 80’s ninja movie tanto?
What do think about the Sacki 3.0 from the German factory "Schmiedeglut"?
Which steel do you think is better cpm magacut or cpm cruwear?
How about the Victorinox rescue tool for firefighters? It's made for exactly that purpose and is used by the company firefighters at Victorinox
How do I sharpen my worn out bottle opener?
Any great October birthday suggestions for fixed blades and auto's?!
the rule is one bottle for two with the items you need for survive ! modified opinel number 12 with an saw blade in the knife ! and an bushmaster bantam for an fixed blade !
Hay dca I've been trying to find the serrated version of the Spyderco ark online but I can't find it anywhere do you know someplace I might be able to find one ?
I don't know if I'd recommend the Wilson for emergency dental surgery.
Hey DCA, is knife an instrument? What knife could be used as a musical instrument?
NUT KNIFE ANSWER: the only answer is the Swiss Army knife can opener tool. It is absolutely perfect for opening those tricky pistachios and peanuts that are too difficult to open with finger nails.
Aside from the deadlock, (which I can't afford) I understand that all otf knives have some shake rattle and roll (sorry, couldn't resist). EXECEPT sa/otf. 1. Is this true? 2. If so,what are some sa/otf, 3. What are the best da/otf?
For the person with the Leatherman Signal who wishes he could add a good file and scissors, I'd recommend pairing it with a Victorinox Mountaineer.
Or are you maybe wishing for the Leatherman Wave :P
Swiss tool X maybe?
@@AYellowPepper Well, they already have the Signal.
Larger fixed blade to carry I’d do the armiger from Demko or the enuff 2 from spyderco
Do you have enuff 2 I have have been looking at it.
I would think of a victorinox companoin for cracking Up some pistache nuts 😊
I got a new Victorinox Outrider on ebay 2.5 years ago for $23.
What's the best no skill required and easy sharpener for someone that hates to sharpen knives?
Worksharp precision adjust pro.
There are few certainties in life, however, I've found that three of them are death, taxes, and my KnifeCenter order will be late.
That Toor Egress also has a glass breaker in the pommel.
Here's my question for the FAQ: Which knife would you recommend for slaying your annoying background music?
Love the channel (otherwise). Keep up the great work.
Obviously the TiNy from UG-Tools is perfect here like in the series 7 vs. wild❤
I’d say if I could choose 2… a leatherman wave an Esee Izula 2.
i thought the ESEE Izula or Candiru might fit with their sheaths...or a Mora...
I can't imagine any circumstances in which I would ever need to restrict my survival gear to what fits in a Nalgene bottle.
The nalgene nazis make you leave your home and you may only pack whatever fits in your nalgene bottle.
No serious, this is what we suffer in Europe daily
