I had a similar problem and tried to get my wife to make her own shoes, belts, bags, scarves, etc.. Fast forward to today and there is no problem anymore with my collecting of knives.

We bought my son a Gerber Hinderer CLS when he graduated from the fire academy as a firefighter EMT. The first thing he used while on a call was not the seatbelt cutter or glass breaker, but the oxygen tank wrench built into the handle. Great knife, great service from Knife Center.

Off the cuff, I can think of a few suggestions: as gifts, try a multi-tool with a good knife blade, a GOOD set of kitchen knives for a cook, a cool looking kiridashi for someone who crafts and, my goto - a Victorinox classic SD that's non-threatening and so, so handy as an inexpensive gift. Anyway - I think it would make a great subject for a video. Keep up the good work!
Hi DCA, You missed the fact that you can use the Gerber Compleat as tongs aswell. Just put the "spork" upside down in the slot of the handle and voila, tongs!

I've always been a little dubious about cutting seatbelts "with ease" with those rescue knife/tool blades. Would y'all be willing to do a side-by-side seatbelt cutting demo like you did a while back with your cardboard slayer video? Are these small devices better for cutting than, say, a serrated blade, or rescue scissors? (If you've already done this, apologies!)
I’m a firefighter and I’ve used that same window punch about 10 times to open car windows. Be aware through that’s these are useless on laminated glass. All cars have laminated glass in the windshield. But many newer cars are putting it in the door windows as well for noise reduction (Tesla Mercedes, higher end makes). Only a saw blade will get you through that glass - perhaps serrated knife blade would do it.
What a stupid idea. Windshields _should_ be laminated for safety reasons, and side windows _should NOT_ be laminated for safety reasons, unless it's the back of a patrol car.

All vehicles for me have an Ozark Trail to give to someone to keep if they forgot a knife, a Wave, a CEO and a Mini Griptilian. That covers me in addition to whatever auto that is in my pocket.
I keep a SOG AT-XR in the truck for an escape tool. Strap cutter designed into the handle, assisted opening with a crossbar lock. Also has a glass breaker on the handle. Not a good edc knife with uts clip but makes a decent emergency escape tool.
For camp/kitchen/game butchering, nothing beats a Dexter. Meat packing houses, butchers and restaurants use them and they are fantastic. White molded handles and great steel for an unbelievably cheap price ❤

Being a coal mine worker the orange scales quickly become dirty but the gut hook is used almost daily and the edge retention is exceptional 👌🏾 I'd gladly purchase again 💯 Ps Could have deeper carry pocket clip and having Para cord with twin beads help with quick deployment from cargo trouser leg pocket !.
Icmve been using that folding santoni for a while now and it’s great. For your camp kitchen needs you will be better off checking your local outdoor store. MSR makes some great backpacking kitchen kits.
When you do the knives of the year video, don't forget to have a "budget bug out" category at various prices. I'm considering a vosteed mini nightshade, but would like to hear about what other sub $100 thin and light blades you'd recommend that weren't in the beat the bug out video.
Note that the resqme can also be bought with a kit (or the kit separately) that comes with multiple mounting options for keeping it within reach in the car. They're cheap enough to just put one or two in each vehicle permanently.

I have a Victorinox Rescue knife in my car. The glass breaker is manual but has a belt cutter , locking main blade that is grooved, and a crazy glass cutter . Also in neon yellow.
I keep a Kershaw Barricade, and Swiss Tech multi tool w/glass breaker, in the console. The Barricade is a good general purpose folder as well as rescue tool. And budget friendly.
Ik keep a Victorinox Rescue Tool in my cars. It is, in my humble opinion the best tool for one self and to help rescue people stuck in cars. It really should have been in this vid (I think at least)

Just go to the shop and filter Brand: Spyderco and Lock Type: non locking, slipjoint, then sort by price and you can see that need to upgrade the budget... :) From experience i can recommend the UK Penknife. Its slim, lightweight, deep carry and slicy. Not for hard work and a bit short, but at least its not much shorter than the PM3. And its in your price range and on sale by KC i saw. I just saw the lil Native is for sale but its even shorter so i would stick to the UKPK.

Hello DCA, Thomas and sometimes Seth. Your videos have inspired me to expand my EDC. Currently my pockets contain a Victorinox Evogrip S18 in a leather slip with a small flashlight and a SOG power pint on the left, and a Gerber lockdown slim pry tool and WE banter in the right. The fifth pocket carries a CJRB Mica. Given that I have 5 assorted blades on my person, in your professional opinion I must ask the following. Should I be purchasing name brand adhesive bandages or are the less expensive store brands suitable? Thank you all for everything you do to share knife info :)
I think I’ve used my hogue trauma in nearly every car accident I’ve attended as a firefighter in the last 3 years it’s not as pretty as it once was but still works as out the box
My dad has some 30-40 year old buck knife, . He goes lake fishing (smaller fish) and has a "cabin" on a lake. (it's a small house). He constantly maintains the cabin and spends most weekends there just taking care of the place. THey usually fish a few times in the winter, and bring the nephews around in the summer. Since I don't fish, I never thought about good knives, but I think it would be better to have a knife more like Buck, that is NOT specialized for fillet, but can do it well enough, but also can come out for all sorts of "summer home maintenance" . ????
To bad SOG discontinued the Bipolar, it is the knife in my vehicle. It has a belt cutter, window breaker and a straight edge blade. It is a very good automobile rescue knife.

I heard with dive knives that divers will use their knife to tap the tank to judge the air left in the tank while underwater. Don't want any sharp pointy edges cutting air lines when you do that. So no sharp points. I'm not a diver. I dunno
Yes to the coin thing "lest the knife cut a friendship" the recipient of the knife returns the coin, this makes the gift transactional so rather than an act of a friend giving a knife the knife is "bought". Other knife traditions My favourite by far relates to a Pukko or similar Scandinavian origin knife. The pommel is often capped with Antler, the reason for this is that for a long time Antler was the hardest material they had, and was harder than wood. This meant that evil spirits could not enter the knife through the handle because it was blocked with antler, as such the knife could not turn against it's owner (accidentally cutting yourself). If you are wondering why the evil spirit could not just go direct into the steel this is because Steel much like salt held a corrosive power against all evil spirits causing pain if the steel was touched which leave the handle so you block that with Antler

Love the Houge Trauma. However, the knife clip sucks. Every time I put it in my pocket, have to use both hands. And can not find any knife clip that can fit the knife to replace the original clip.

I have been searching for a utx-85 in bounty hunter theme. Impossible to find. I am not ready to actually buy one yet, but they're completely unobtainable. Only fake copies are available. The normal ultratech size and the utx-70 are available, but not the 85
Ah, the spork. Part spoon, part fork, useless as either. The tines aren't cut deeply enough to actually pierce and hold things that need to be stuck with a fork but are enough to compromise the bowl of the spoon so that it isn't very good at holding soup. I'd be better off with chopsticks (I am.pretty good with them) and, uncouth or not, just turning the bowl up to drink the broth, etc. in a soup.
Have a Gerber Method multitool in the car since forever. The compartment between the seats. Serrated blade if I or my loved one get stuck in the seatbelt. Pliers if need to pull something loose. Ugly, but a tool
Old hickory will be the cheapest. They have to be willing to take care of high carbon steel. If they still don't want to take care of knives, then I would look at Victoria Knox or possibly arbolito from boker

Does not Spyderco make a seat belt cutter? I was talking with a government employee who carried one. It is along the lines of a Police but has a tip that goes under the seat belt so the person would not be cut. I just can not remember the name of it, and it is really annoying me.
Question about the need for seat belt cutters, does the seat belt mechanism tend to jam or become inoperative after a crash? I just thought it would be easier just to press the button on the seat belt to unhook it instead of having to cut the belt.

Ive been looking for a knife with a multi tool on it. As in, instead of it being a multi tool with a knife, I want it to be mainly a knife but with some multi tool functionality. The only thing ive found so far that seems to fit is the Leatherman K4 and the variants of Victorinox rescue knife, none of which I particularly like. Its weird that there wouldnt be more options for this, like a decently good folding knife with a scissor, screwdriver etc in the handle? Suggestions, anyone?
Microtech otf's are pretty, but its not worth the money with the "thumb breaking action". I have two, one failed to deploy on the 2nd try, and is hard to deploy. My 2nd is even worse, its so hard to deploy it will start ripping my nail from my finger apart.

Other knife traditions
My favourite by far relates to a Pukko or similar Scandinavian origin knife. The pommel is often capped with Antler, the reason for this is that for a long time Antler was the hardest material they had, and was harder than wood. This meant that evil spirits could not enter the knife through the handle because it was blocked with antler, as such the knife could not turn against it's owner (accidentally cutting yourself). If you are wondering why the evil spirit could not just go direct into the steel this is because Steel much like salt held a corrosive power against all evil spirits causing pain if the steel was touched which leave the handle so you block that with Antler
I have Swiss army knife and a cheap mtech so if it gets broke into I don't lose a nice knife.

Love the Houge Trauma. However, the knife clip sucks. Every time I put it in my pocket, have to use both hands. And can not find any knife clip that can fit the knife to replace the original clip.
I keep in my truck the Victorinox Rescue tool.
What about the Victorinox rescue tool SAK? Partially serrated main blade, serrated tipless blade, saw blade, pry bar bottle opener, and a glass breaker, bright fluorescent yellow.

Hi I hope you can answer my question(s): So, If a tool is a multitool as soon as I can open bottles with it. Would the spine of any (beefy enough) knife be a multitool? And, would the Civivi MT-1 Contactless Hook Keychain Multi-Tool with a dedicated bottle opener not be a multitool as I would never open a bottle that I am going to drink the contents off with, a tool that is disigned to battle viruses and bacteria.

I have been searching for a utx-85 in bounty hunter theme. Impossible to find. I am not ready to actually buy one yet, but they're completely unobtainable. Only fake copies are available. The normal ultratech size and the utx-70 are available, but not the 85

Ah, the spork. Part spoon, part fork, useless as either. The tines aren't cut deeply enough to actually pierce and hold things that need to be stuck with a fork but are enough to compromise the bowl of the spoon so that it isn't very good at holding soup. I'd be better off with chopsticks (I am.pretty good with them) and, uncouth or not, just turning the bowl up to drink the broth, etc. in a soup.
Have a Gerber Method multitool in the car since forever. The compartment between the seats. Serrated blade if I or my loved one get stuck in the seatbelt. Pliers if need to pull something loose. Ugly, but a tool
Old hickory will be the cheapest. They have to be willing to take care of high carbon steel. If they still don't want to take care of knives, then I would look at Victoria Knox or possibly arbolito from boker

Does not Spyderco make a seat belt cutter? I was talking with a government employee who carried one. It is along the lines of a Police but has a tip that goes under the seat belt so the person would not be cut. I just can not remember the name of it, and it is really annoying me.
Question about the need for seat belt cutters, does the seat belt mechanism tend to jam or become inoperative after a crash? I just thought it would be easier just to press the button on the seat belt to unhook it instead of having to cut the belt.
If the car is upside down, your weight against the seatbelt might make the button very difficult to press.

I keep a strop near where I keep my knives, but it's my understanding that stropping compound is not food safe. Any tips for easy maintenance of knives that might be used for food?
Maybe just wipe the blade down well with a damp cloth before using?
For the strop, and any other non-food safe thing that may hit your blade, a quick wipe and rinse with soapy water will assuage your concerns -DCA

my parents kitchen knife set is bad. ruined from years of neglect. ive gotten them a few mismatch kitchen knifes and taught them how to take care of them, but now im in search for a budget minded full set to gift to them for the holidays . any recommendations?
Ive been looking for a knife with a multi tool on it. As in, instead of it being a multi tool with a knife, I want it to be mainly a knife but with some multi tool functionality. The only thing ive found so far that seems to fit is the Leatherman K4 and the variants of Victorinox rescue knife, none of which I particularly like. Its weird that there wouldnt be more options for this, like a decently good folding knife with a scissor, screwdriver etc in the handle?
Suggestions, anyone?
It doesn't have scissors, but the spyderco clipitool standard with g10 handles has screwdrivers, wire stripper, can opener, and bottle opener.
Microtech otf's are pretty, but its not worth the money with the "thumb breaking action".
I have two, one failed to deploy on the 2nd try, and is hard to deploy.
My 2nd is even worse, its so hard to deploy it will start ripping my nail from my finger apart.
Maybe put up some more boring white and black knives
