I appreciate the recurring "simple... but not easy to do" mantra
You bet! It's a balance that takes dedication.
I've only just discovered Alex Toth (sorry guys, I live in the UK lol), but he is really special. Thanks for the info about the great man from another great comic artist Steve Rude, what a fantastic channel. Thanks for all the cool breakdown videos and for showing young artists the stuff they really wanna know!!!
Thank you for the kind words! Toth is truly one of a kind. I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying these breakdown vids! Cheers from AZ
That Mars storyboard Alex did was for Angry Red Planet (1959/1960), which was a huge favorite of mine as a kid before I even knew it was Toth who did the storyboards.
I tend to gravitate toward looser, and more gestural works (including Toth’s earlier), but always found something about his precise, no nonsense lines highly intriguing. Especially in those animated series. Love your works and studies as well and really appreciate your analysis and insights! Another great vid!👏👏😎
You're welcome! It's fun to explore the artistic spectrum.
What a pleasure it is to be able to watch you sir!
There is truly so much to learn from just in this one video. I think I’ll be doing a deep dive over the next few days
Thanks for watching!
Awesome! Dive in and have fun with it! Can't wait to see what you learn!
This type of content is fantastic! Thanks Steve. Love the art of Nexus
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video
You are a genius! I bought your Nexus in the 90s here in Spain, and the drawings were so magical.
This was so educational and inspiring. Been drawing all my life and you always show me something new.
Glad to hear you got something out of this video. Happy to share my knowledge in art!
Alex Toth is the man and his stuff is so good. Very simple figures but complicated at the same time..
Absolutely! Alex Toth is a true master of his craft. His ability to create such expressive and dynamic characters with seemingly simple lines is truly remarkable.
Rude the dude their is something about your personality that makes you a perfect teacher I also like how you say this stuff isn't easy looking forward to your next lesson so stock up on your energy drinks
Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm glad you're enjoying the lessons. Teaching is definitely a passion of mine, and I'm always looking for ways to make it as engaging and informative as possible. I'll be sure to stock up on the energy drinks! See you in class!
I just noticed the greys on "young Aladdin". Do you think he's cutting screen tones for those?

Love your Videos
I won't mince words! You're too good to be so bad! (I'm actually watching the original Jonny Quest series with my son this month.)
Those are some incredible influences! John Buscema is a legend in the comics industry, and his work has inspired countless artists. Frank Miller, Bill Sienkiewicz, Joe Kubert, Adam Kubert, and Mike Deodato are all fantastic choices as well.
I may be an unusual case, but I get somehow bored by Toth's work - which I've known for 35 years. Anything he does is so well thought-out and balanced that it doesn't allow for the variations, inconsistencies and surprises typical of other great artists - for instance, Jack Kirby, Frank Miller or the Shirow Masamune of Appleseed. Toth's art is technically exceptional and yet rather dry and soulless, in my opinion.
Toth's precision and minimalism can definitely feel restrained compared to the more dynamic and unpredictable styles of the other artists you mentioned. Toth seemed to perfect the fundamentals, which can sometimes come across as less emotional or "wild." One could argue that’s part of his unique charm- stripping things down to their essence. It’s definitely not for everyone, though I appreciate your comment
