The camera then switches to Joe's face, and in that moment it is incredibly easy to believe that Death itself is looking out through those expressionless eyes. Just for a second one could believe that Pitt is in fact thousands of years old. Amazing acting from both of them, but it's Pitt's performance as Joe Black that makes the movie so much more than just an enjoyable one.
+sonorman44 This movie wrecks me. The story is deep and like you said, Pitt's acting is so superb. His facial expressions tell everything that his dialogue isn't and that is so refreshing to watch. He convinces you that he's both ancient in age and new to life, and he keeps a sense of innocence about him that you never see in a man. Just simply refreshing. I love love love this movie.
All the actors give a sterling performance, especially Anthony Hopkins. The beautiful music by Thomas Newman goes a long way to making the movie what it is too. So many questions.... I love how you explained that. I wonder how she and her father sense who he was . She sensed it lasted and the father sensed it early on...its almost as if he temporarily granted them the ability to. Similar to the way he enabled the Caribbean elderly lady to sense something peaceful when he touched her. I also wonder why he didn't stay longer if he wanted to be with her so badly. I loved this movie but I think the ending with both men walking off could've been written better. Beautiful though
Just watched this movie. I can fully admit that I bawled my eyes out at this scene and the very end of the movie when she meets the real man in the body. This is truly the most beautiful film ever.
00:22 The writing is so good. One of the best lines right here. "If you're trying to tell me my future you're looking on the wrong side." So many levels to that line. He's looking at the back of her hand while wondering if he should take her with him to the "other side". While she is talking about her hand, he doesn't even know which side of life she should stay on. He's struggling with taking her with him to the other side and wondering if that's wrong or not. It's so good.
+GamerBritg89 If they said this movie was in their top 10 films, then I'm pretty sure it's safe to assume that "destroyed" was meant in a very good way haha.
Brad Pitt's interpretation here is ridiculously good. I mean, the amount of pain and sorrow going through his eyes in this scene is unbelievable. Coupled with his desire and love for her. Such an incredibly intense moment. Awesome
I remember seeing a quote of his talking about how he got into character. Something about “you have to consider what this master of death has seen, and how he would feel about death, love, loneliness, etc” Really showed me this is one of his best roles yet. I think he absolutely nailed it. Imagine being able to make an audience fall in love with Death.. that’s talent.
The "Beauty" in who she chooses to be. Not just who she is. She is beautiful from those who admire. Those whom admire beauty, are diamonds in the rough.
She knows who he is She knew everything She knew it She was afraid of admitting he true identity Death was afraid too Both of them were afraid of losing each other just for confession. Somewhere she best possible way her love made accept his truth so it was so nacked in front of her that she didn'tcare to confess.
When she says she can go with him, it's one of the most heartbreaking parts of any movie I have seen. This movie is a bit uneven, but the ending is very good.
THIS is still the BEST scene from the movie. I get goosebumps listening to the score... one of my favorite movies when it came out almost 22 years ago, and still one of my all time favorites. definitely under rated.
@@this_is_stupid-x3b I watched Road to Perdition and The Magnificent the same afternoon back in the days of Netflix by mail. I agree, the score is equally good in The Road to Perdition.
I haven't been in love in a very long time. This is probably what it should be like for a man and a woman. And if its true love nothing in this world will break it no matter what. Mystical scene and beautiful.
How about how Anthony Hopkins (as Susan's father) describes love in the helicopter in the beginning of the movie?! The writing... Anthony Hopkins's delivery ... WOW!!! No WONDER death had to come back to experience that!! That's a great description that we should all aspire to!! Gorgeously poetic. -And how about how Anthony Hopkins described meeting his late wife later in the movie?! He remembered what she was wearing ... what they ate... The writing was touching and fantastic, and Anthony Hopkins brought those words to life!! His performance was perfection.
-There is something I do want to tell you. -But you can't? Just now when you hesitated, I got a chill. Remember that morning in the coffee shop? When you said: "What's wrong with taking care of a woman? She takes care of you." -Did I say that? Mm. -And I said you'd have a hard time finding a woman like that these days. Well, you found one, Joe. -The coffee shop. -That was the place, and you were the guy. [...] -May I kiss you? Beautiful scene.
The movie represents the apex of our sensitivity, idealism and beauty... whenever I forget how beautiful the world CAN be, I watch this film. To all of my fellow commenters, you have great taste!
LadySwanify! NovemberRose Because nothing beats true love. There’s only one main character in this film without it. And the immense love the other characters express for each other are beyond what words can express. A daughter’s love for her father, despite realizing he isn’t her favorite( without being jealous of that favoritism)...his infinite love for his favorite, and their “daddy’s girl” bond...major attraction between two love birds that is so compelling they have the desire to build a relationship of genuine, deep love. Love expressed through painful sacrifice. A couple’s love so genuine that’s expressed nonverbally to the degree the audience can feel it. The kind of love everyone on this planet yearns for. That’s why.
The music score for this film is such a masterpiece. It swoops in and makes every intimate scene so powerful, pulling on your heart and emotions in a primal way.
for her they are one and the same , like she said , " my head was turned " in the coffee shop , but it was her interactions with death that the head turn turned to love , in this scene she spoke the words that made a grown man want to cry , " I COULD COME WITH YOU " .
I think it was joe she had fallen in love with instead of the coffee shop guy. When joe leaves and the coffee shop guy returns, the pain on her face tells that.
I agree the movie is underrated. This film made me a fan of Brad. He played the part with such class and subtlety. Since he was death being human for the first time, his character had to possess a type of innocence, even though he was more than centuries od. Pitt captured that subtltybeautifully and believably without going overboard. Not an easy thing to do for an actor.
But that made sense, too. She had just met the coffee shop guy - you could immediately see the potential - but he was younger, and not as deep yet in his maturity. So they would be growing into the deeper love. But Death had been around literally forever, and was there expressly to experience a deep love and connection with life. So their connection was immediately on a deep level!
Her looks are like a cross between Michelle Pfeiffer and Jennifer Garner. Her eyes are tantalizing. They way the music swells when they kiss, so bittersweet and heartbreaking. The score is wonderful.
The way the theme started when they are kissing , it is mind blowing , awesome and best scene .if you see a movie from start to end and listen to it each and everything what's happening in the movie and be aware of it , you will be amazed . ❤️
I'm so sorry for your loss!! That would be heartbreaking to see this movie then! -I can see why you would react that way! I was super close with my dad, and Susan's relationship with her dad was what I love the most about this movie!! Anthony Hopkins plays that with perfection, and the tenderness that they have between them is obvious with each scene that they're together! Just beautiful - and inspiring! When he danced with her at the party, it was too precious for words!
You can see the right moment where Death realized she fell in love with him twice... but he was never the first guy in the first place. And how selfish would be for him taking her too if she realizes who he really is, even if she loves him for what he is. :( A love story we never got to see nowadays.
It makes you really wonder, did she really fall in love with Joe(or whatever his real name is)? Or did she fall in love with death? Joe was the one that made her feel something in that coffee shop and made her mind wonder what could be, but death was the one that seduced her heart
She reminded him(death) everything that they talked in the coffee shop. Because she somehow knew(even though she didnt want to but still she knew)that he is not the guy she met on the coffeshop. This scene is special because of this. They both knew that his is not the same man. But still they love each other so much. The first reason why she had this feelings for him was because of all the thing Real Joe told her when they first met. But then she fell in love with the Death not Joe she knows it and he(death) knows it. Thats why its sad
Like great wines that movies when it was presented the first times to the public astonished shoccked and infuriated. But 25 years later it is finally re discovered as pure perfection. Brad Pitt is sublime, the young actress Susan is a miracle of tenderness, all fits in all. Bravo, brilliant, emotional bliss.
We never know when their time will come, but we know it eventually will. Say your goodbyes and “ I Love you’s “ , well before the time. Make sure they know exactly how you feel, ahead of time and reinforce those feelings as often as possible, right to the last second. It’s such a glorifying time to lay it all on the line.
I loved this movie from the first time I saw it to this day. His revealing who he really is and his intentions plus the score were my favorite parts of the movie.
I remember when I left home at 18 I had to say good bye to my then girlfriend who I fell madly in love. She wanted to stay with her family while I wanted to move to the big city and start a new life. She cried asking if I'd come back to visit or if maybe I could just wait a bit longer then she'd have the courage to come with me. At the time I decided to leave and all i can remember is her pleading with me not to leave. I know i did the right thing by leaving but not a day goes by I don't wish I made a different choice. I never saw her again and I haven't fell in love with anyone the same way again.
i’m sure she maybe feels the same way as you do and you still have a soft spot in her heart. maybe try to reach out to her again? try a reconciliation? you only live once, it wouldn’t hurt to try to reach out and see if anything is still possible. especially if you still have such strong feelings for her❤️
All i can say is if you fell that way talk to her tell her how you feel and who know what could happen somthing bad or something good take a risk because life to short for what ifs.
What a scene! compare joe-death here vs in the emergency room with the old woman when he was so confident and cocky, not being able to fully empathize with the old woman's physical pain. Here, he is vulnerable, confused, and hurt when she relates her meeting with joe-human in the coffee. It is pain "thru and thru" when he realises it isn't him she is in love with! Death really went thru the whole gamut of human life in this movie. And the element of luck in life and love. Death here really personifies human life - the beauty and pain that we will all one day have to leave behind. Live life to the fullest.
I remember watching this, then went on holiday, and spotted a lad my age who looked like brad in this…, we ended up in same hotel. we ended up having a holiday romance, i was 16 he was 17. It was the most romantic thing ever for me, i had soundtrack for this in my head the first time we kissed. Everything said about love and how it should make you feel in film was exactly how i felt with him .. I am late 30s and i still remember everything about that holiday.
Wonderful scene, did anyone notice when Black said Susan, thank you for loving me that the last part was said in Death's original voice? That part is what drives it home.....when he truly lays it all on the table.
everything in this movie felt like a dream. A hazy dream both beautiful and sad, and you feel every bit of the moment. Like when they said goodbye, it hurt you too. :(
"What a glorious night, every face I see is a memory. It may not be a perfectly perfect memory. Sometimes we had our ups and downs. But we're all together, and you're mine for a night. And I'm gonna break precedent and tell you my one wish. That you would have a life as lucky as mine, where you can wake up one morning and say, I don't want anything more. Sixty-Five Years. Don't they go by in a blink?" My father just turned 65 last month. This movie is an inspiration to all.
No matter how you see it, the car crash victim's loved one was key in bringing him back. She made love with him while he was in the grip of death. You could say she brought him back to life. Her vocation as a doctor is highly symbolic.
yes it was great , but the score from SOMEWHERE IN TIME (similar story line) is sublime , and JANE SEYMOUR in that movie simply took your breath away .

Similar to the way he enabled the Caribbean elderly lady to sense something peaceful when he touched her. I also wonder why he didn't stay longer if he wanted to be with her so badly. I loved this movie but I think the ending with both men walking off could've been written better. Beautiful though
TheHalfBloodPrince This comment reflects exactly what I thought when I first saw that scene, the depth in his eyes were just amazing.
Just watched this movie. I can fully admit that I bawled my eyes out at this scene and the very end of the movie when she meets the real man in the body. This is truly the most beautiful film ever.
Forlani's expressions, what they convey, were terrific. She should have had more exposure in movies.
David Macias ooooh nicely said!
i think it’s not that deep, it’s just because you’re supposed to do readings on the right hand if you’re a futureteller
@@itsflowerside it is that deep. Read Mark twains version of the devils son he tries have people live long as possible with as little pain.
God .. seems you are also a very deep person. Respect to you
@@StevenHanoverit's not that deep.
the concept of this movie is so deep how can a movie about death be so beautiful Brad Pitt absolutely destroyed this film one of my top 10 movies
+GamerBritg89 If they said this movie was in their top 10 films, then I'm pretty sure it's safe to assume that "destroyed" was meant in a very good way haha.
We Are Young ntiamoah
I agree, another one would definitely be Robin Williams' - What Dreams May Come.
That flick is a trip.
Hard to belive the critics hated it
Brad Pitt's interpretation here is ridiculously good. I mean, the amount of pain and sorrow going through his eyes in this scene is unbelievable. Coupled with his desire and love for her. Such an incredibly intense moment. Awesome
I remember seeing a quote of his talking about how he got into character. Something about “you have to consider what this master of death has seen, and how he would feel about death, love, loneliness, etc”
Really showed me this is one of his best roles yet. I think he absolutely nailed it. Imagine being able to make an audience fall in love with Death.. that’s talent.
Claire Forlani = Beautiful Woman
Alice A Lim Oh Doenst look human, maybe a clone
Harvey Weinstein thought so too.
The "Beauty" in who she chooses to be. Not just who she is.
She is beautiful from those who admire. Those whom admire beauty, are diamonds in the rough.
I‘ve studied mathemtaics for some years now. And I can confirm this equation is correct
Brad Pitt= most beautiful Man
"I could come with you.... You want me to wait? You'll come back?" Man, that hit.
She knows who he is
She knew everything
She knew it
She was afraid of admitting he true identity
Death was afraid too
Both of them were afraid of losing each other just for confession.
Somewhere she best possible way her love made accept his truth so it was so nacked in front of her that she didn'tcare to confess.
"If I ever gain anything in this world, it was true love which is worth all the fame and riches of this world. My soul is free."
Janice Zeno oh my god
Best movie score of all time...and one of the best romantic movies of all time. If you haven't seen it..rent it. You'll never forget it.
This movie is one of the greatest. The writing, the storyline, and the actors. Beautifully written.
And the music, too
Two of the most perfect faces
When she says she can go with him, it's one of the most heartbreaking parts of any movie I have seen. This movie is a bit uneven, but the ending is very good.
I miss being in Love.
Charlie Yard Service me too
Happy New Year Viki Goose
+Oliver Nielsen Standards, I have standards now that ,I'm older.
+Oliver Nielsen Honestly, There's alot of nonsense going on in the dating scene.
Nonsense? You mean shagging?
THIS is still the BEST scene from the movie. I get goosebumps listening to the score... one of my favorite movies when it came out almost 22 years ago, and still one of my all time favorites. definitely under rated.
This is my favourite movie ever. Not only is the cast gorgeous and well cast, but the music sceneries and camera work is so superbly chosen and done.
This was the movie that made me realize Brad Pitt is an A list celebrity with acting chops
the music score was absolutely fabulous.
Yes she could. She knew he was gone, that's why she said "I wish you could have known my father."
The score is great here. Sad, hopeful, mysterious.
If you like this you should check out Road to perdition very similar
@@this_is_stupid-x3b I watched Road to Perdition and The Magnificent the same afternoon back in the days of Netflix by mail. I agree, the score is equally good in The Road to Perdition.
I love this movie and the song takes the scene to another level I love how different the plot is
Didn't like this movie when it first came out. Saw it ten or so years later and loved it. Now it's on my must-watch once a year movie list.
I agree that is definitely a watch later.
His performance was perfection.
this is not love, this is fantasy and lust. thats the point.
Susan : "Thank you for loving me"...best line in the movie...
Can I just say the actress in this movie is ridiculously stunning
How can someone be this stunning?
Claire forlani🖤
"You want me to wait,? You'd come back?" Astounding acting .....
-There is something I do want to tell you.
-But you can't? Just now when you hesitated, I got a chill. Remember that morning in the coffee shop? When you said: "What's wrong with taking care of a woman? She takes care of you."
-Did I say that? Mm.
-And I said you'd have a hard time finding a woman like that these days. Well, you found one, Joe.
-The coffee shop.
-That was the place, and you were the guy.
[...]
-May I kiss you?
Beautiful scene.
The movie represents the apex of our sensitivity, idealism and beauty... whenever I forget how beautiful the world CAN be, I watch this film. To all of my fellow commenters, you have great taste!
Has someone remarked that great acting? He actually plays the part of an animated corpse here...with such brilliance!
I love how see gazes into his eyes with that beautiful smile! Hello doll face! 🤪
2018 and I'm still watching this movie .. why
LadySwanify! NovemberRose 2018!? Lol.....okay.....
LadySwanify! NovemberRose 2017 dummy
LadySwanify! NovemberRose the next clip where Bill and his daughter talk and Bill has his monologue is one of the most touching pieces of film
Its ahead of its time.. A consciousness we are now coming to understand
LadySwanify! NovemberRose
Because nothing beats true love.
That’s why.
When you're so beautiful even death fell in love..
The music score for this film is such a masterpiece. It swoops in and makes every intimate scene so powerful, pulling on your heart and emotions in a primal way.
1:35 When Death realizes that she's in love with the coffee shop guy and not him.
for her they are one and the same , like she said , " my head was turned " in the coffee shop , but it was her interactions with death that the head turn turned to love , in this scene she spoke the words that made a grown man want to cry , " I COULD COME WITH YOU " .
@@MrForttunate it will make me feel week af 🥺
I think it was joe she had fallen in love with instead of the coffee shop guy. When joe leaves and the coffee shop guy returns, the pain on her face tells that.
I agree the movie is underrated. This film made me a fan of Brad. He played the part with such class and subtlety. Since he was death being human for the first time, his character had to possess a type of innocence, even though he was more than centuries od. Pitt captured that subtltybeautifully and believably without going overboard. Not an easy thing to do for an actor.
I completely agree
I must have seen this movie at least 30 times over the years. Superb acting by everyone. Still watched it again in 2021. All time classic.
This movie is such a masterpiece. Definitely underrated.
She loved him for who he was. I think he provided a much deeper connection than the coffee shop guy.
Correct but in the end she'll fall in love with him (again). That's the reason Death took his body.
2:40. . . Fantastic score for this scene. . . Sweet, sad at the same time
This has to be one of the best musical scores ever written.
All of these years later, and I Love watching this scene!
Genius film story casting and performances.
Claire Forlani if you are reading this… your performance was perfection.
2:40 did anyone notice that single tear rolling down her face after the kiss... this is heartbreaking
Great catch!
Her looks are like a cross between Michelle Pfeiffer and Jennifer Garner. Her eyes are tantalizing. They way the music swells when they kiss, so bittersweet and heartbreaking. The score is wonderful.
Reminds me a little of Barbara Streisand too.
the level of talent involved in this production means it could only be what it is , a CINEMATIC MASTERPIECE .
Claire Forlani is so gorgeous in this scene.
Not merely the scene itself, but the music/score 🎶 simply does it! 👌🏼
Exquisite acting by Ms. Forlani. Can't tell if it's a movie or reality.
This is a very well acted movie from everyone.
The way the theme started when they are kissing , it is mind blowing , awesome and best scene .if you see a movie from start to end and listen to it each and everything what's happening in the movie and be aware of it , you will be amazed . ❤️
This is the first movie I saw in the theatre after my dad passed away. I cried so hard and couldn’t move till the next showing.
@@BAfan-tt9zl 💜
You can see the right moment where Death realized she fell in love with him twice... but he was never the first guy in the first place. And how selfish would be for him taking her too if she realizes who he really is, even if she loves him for what he is. :(
A love story we never got to see nowadays.
Bingo, you nailed it
Back then when Hollywood making Blockbuster Movies.
It makes you really wonder, did she really fall in love with Joe(or whatever his real name is)? Or did she fall in love with death? Joe was the one that made her feel something in that coffee shop and made her mind wonder what could be, but death was the one that seduced her heart
I am asking myself the same question
I love how this movie just pulls you in along with the characters and you feel it.
I don’t mind being torn up in the end!
What a ride!!!
I loved this movie from the first time I saw it to this day. His revealing who he really is and his intentions plus the score were my favorite parts of the movie.
I bought this DVD years ago. Now I'm going to have to watch it. Not complaining. It was really a good and unique movie.
Have you reached out to her by any chance sorry I’m just curious ??
i’m sure she maybe feels the same way as you do and you still have a soft spot in her heart. maybe try to reach out to her again? try a reconciliation? you only live once, it wouldn’t hurt to try to reach out and see if anything is still possible. especially if you still have such strong feelings for her❤️
All i can say is if you fell that way talk to her tell her how you feel and who know what could happen somthing bad or something good take a risk because life to short for what ifs.
Fred RM MY FREAKING HEART MAN....
This actress is absolutely gorgeous
every man wanted to look like Brad
They don't make movies like this anymore. But they should.
The first time I saw this scene on TV. I had to watch the whole movie. When she just nods her head. You can feel the emotion.
One of the greatest movies
One of the most amazing movies, great scene . Death falling in love with human feelings..
everything in this movie felt like a dream.

Her vocation as a doctor is highly symbolic.
thanks for this cinematic masterpiece, i watch these scenes and bawl my eyes out every time.
