Peregrine Falcon Attempts to Steal Prey from Osprey

- A peregrine falcon, the world's fastest bird, is in hot pursuit of a target. But today's operation isn't a hunt, it's theft - he's spied an osprey with a trout, and he's determined to claim it for himself.

The ability to capture a high-speed chase in the air using a very long lens and keep the film quality at high definition is just extraordinary.
Hugh Jackson you speak the truth. I had hard times capturing a flying grass owl and pied harriers in short range. LOL
Grass owl? Never heard of that species. Looks much like the Barn owl.
It’s incredible footage I just hate how they edit stuff sometimes like the heron looking to the side like he was watching the bird get the fish lol
Skills and knowledge with Lots of Patients.
Hugh Jackson Wouldn’t you love to go back in time, not very long ago, to show the man (it was a man BTW) who developed the first photograph, this type of amazing High Def. Video. That would be fun! 😁
Came here for the peregrine and stayed for the osprey
Me too. Hawk got dipped on. Literally...

The Osprey so magnificent! I love this bird! ❤️ The falcon is just as good of hunter...go get your own food!
@[][__•_][]SUDO[][_•__][] yes I know
Ospreys are magnificent.
2:20 "bogey on your 6!"
"Bank right, pull up, pull up"
... I can't shake him him.
"Dive! Dive!"
And they said the release of Top Gun: Maverick was delayed...😁😁
Where's Goose when you need him?
😂👍🏾
@G E T R E K T details, details
Yeah it is really fun to watch an adult Peregrine teach young fledglings the fine points of flight, saw 2 young ones chase their dad and he just puled sharply up and rolled over and was on their 6 in a flash lol
That goes to show just how incredibly intelligent the osprey is because it knew the peregrin falcon would not fly into the water. That takes a very high level of thinking
@@MrPooPooification The commentator mentioned that Peregrines aren't known to be thieves so I'm guessing this doesn't happen a lot.
@@FlyingUnosaur But the Osprey had the prior knowledge that the Falcon can not follow him in water. That is more interesting.
@@FlyingUnosaur Skuas and Large gulls are, so maybe Ospreys encounter this a fair bit.
I’ve got relatives that couldn’t work that out 😂
I’m intelligent
I grew up in the high mountain lakes of Oregon, watching Osprey dive, smack the water, bring up trout. Great way to know if it's a good lake to fish...I love those birds. :)
Every time a falcon hunts they keep hearing narrators .
"In a world where. . . ."
Brilliant to see our wild world in such detail.
The skills of the camera and production crew should be celebrated and applauded for giving us such amazing footage.
Where I live in Yorkshire, UK, my 7 year old and I were lucky last year (2019), to see our first osprey albeit at distance.
The venue was a local 100 acre reservoir called Scaling Dam and we often go there to the bird hide and on long walks to see what nature offers us to enjoy.
This time, after talking to some resident bird watchers, we were just about to leave the hide, but some more arrived in an excited state to say they had possibly seen an osprey.
We stayed a short while without incident but then the lady who was watching from the east window shouted "Osprey".
We witnessed a splash, like I say at distance, but we could plainly see it had a large trout in its talons.
What happened next is exactly like in this video but with a slightly different outcome.
Suddenly, a peregrine falcon, that had been aggressive towards a marsh harrier earlier, reappeared to tackle the osprey.
It constantly swooped and dived at the osprey, to try and seemingly steal its prize for around 5 minutes.
Then as the two birds were almost out of sight, the osprey had a tactic to evade the peregrine pirate.
It went up.
Way up.
Too high for the smaller peregrine to follow, despite lugging its glistening trout, far above the moorland.
After a short while, the peregrine gave up and the two specks in the distance, separated on their own journeys. The victor, able to enjoy Its hard earned meal.
We all looked at each other in the bird hide, blessed to have witnessed a moment we always cherish and will talk about for whoever cares to listen.
Our natural world is ours to enjoy and protect. It's up to us on You tube, for example, to show others what a magic world it is out there on our doorsteps.
Yep... Great camera work
You should write a book
Leigh Winspear you're saying the perigrine couldn't achieve the high altitude ... Just couldn't follow the osprey to the same altitude. Not convinced. Maybe the osprey has more stamina and wore the falcon out.
@@christopherfitch7705 Possibly. Im just telling what we witnessed. Im not even sure the peregrine is after the ospreys food.
Especially as raptors are extremely aggressive and territorial.
Ive recently observed two peregrines chasing , then killing and eating a kestrel, right in front of me, at my workplace.
Its a pretty savage and potentially very short life being a bird, but predators predate and prey is going to get preyed upon, no doubt about it.
Great account
The fish was so happy to be able to catch its breath , for a moment before he meets his doom lol
Tobias was a red-tailed hawk. If I recall, Jake had the peregrine falcon morph, and Cassie and Marco each imprinted on the same osprey.
Plot twist: The fish was Visser 3.
@@cameronwilliams3599 OMG, you're right! 😱 It's just been so long 😭 I'll correct the comment now.
I love watching osprey fish in the pond behind my house. Their dive into the water is a loud splash.

There is no “next life” in that sense. “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” Hebrews 9:27 Also “Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. 26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; 27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. 28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.” John 5:25-29

🌺Pretty incredible footage they were able to capture. And this is
nearly in our backyard. Such high drama in Yellowstone. Looks like a great show. -H
Such intensity, and amazing footage. This was great!!!
I think the peregrine falcon was just intent on chasing the larger, stronger osprey away from its nesting area. I've never heard of a peregrine eating fish.
Ex Essex When in Rome, eat what the osprey eats.
Well even I was confused 😅
No- if you watch it closely you can see that the falcon was clearly trying to reach for that fish. And the falcon is in the Ospreys territory. Once the male has delivered his meal to the nest and his talons are free- him and his larger mate are then free to defend- a good time for the falcon to dissapear and maybe look elswhere for it's lunch
There are studies showing Peregrines eat dead fish washed up on the beach

Beautiful creatures!
The peregrines are my favorite local birds. I'm impressed how fast they adapted to city livin'.

Ospreys are absolutely one of my favorite birds, so incredible to watch hunt!! Great video!
Wowza! Great photography. Never seen a peregrine do that. Must have been hangry!
I agree. Their preferred prey is birds.
The cinematography and camera angles are stunning! Awesome video!!
I’ve seen an osprey out fly a bald eagle to hang onto it’s catch. Amazing aerial acrobatics.
That must have been really cool to see but from my experience it's also pretty common for bald eagles to actually loose there own catch because of how bulky, heavy and therefore relatively slow they are
I work in a falconry and we sometimes let them land on the roof by throwing their food up there and 3 out of 5 times a magpies gets to it before they do
The larger eagle can usually bully the Osprey into giving up its catch rather than risk injury. I've watched two eagles, one above and one below the Osprey, the one attacking from below turned upside down and snatched the fish with its talons. Osprey is better off giving it up to live another day!
Wow what a once in a lifetime footage. Superb
Cockney Osprey:

This Falcon just looks like a bully lol
Yay, osprey! ♡
That's one very hungry Falcon to be that desperate to try and steal a fish
I see hawks, eagles, falcons, vultures, and Frickin Crows going after the ospreys here.
But they sure look like the best Combat Pilots of the bunch from my experiences watching them.
And they usually don't take 💩 from nobody 😂
Smart Bird
Beautiful video. Great footage. A pleasure to watch. Enjoyed Irene.
falcon reminds me of an older neighbor, wanting something for free.
Lol we all want something for nothing 🤣
He wanted freedom on his space and not anyone borrowing his, but not taking someone else's and even less his food. Misunderstanding. It s not cause you say don't come picnic on my lawn that you wish to eat his sandwich...^^
Oh yeah and you might argue but peregrines don't dwell on lakes, but what makes you think animal live here and now? The guys might have met the other day on that other corner over the cliff...Now that makes me think of what if seafull come by lurking at some fish pod while an osprey is around. Would they see a potential predator or a thief? Hard to know thanks
I'm going to train one to get me toilet paper!!!
Tim Jones You must mean the peregrine?? Osprey would bring soggy t.p.
I was turkey hunting one year and this big bird went down and came up with a large mouth bass. Once he got the fish, the big bird perched in a tree right behind me. The bird absolutely was tearing the bass up. Come to find out, the big bird was an Osprey. Wish I had it on camera. I'll never forget it.
fish still alive at the end all don't mind me.

No problem, you are not causing a problem, but it seems you have one. However i really don't get what it is. Could you please explain? Are you upset that the osprey did not dispatch the fish in a humane manner?
Nature is not all sunshine and rainbows, all this freedom comes with a tremendous price!
Saw tons of wild osprey in Florida today. Saw them diving for fish. Beautiful birds.
Not today, falcon. Not today.
How do you only have 2.5 million subs
What an incredible piece of film - never knew a Peregrine would want a fish!
Yeah, they will even eat dead fish washed up on shore, and they do steal from other birds a good deal I think
Great footage, thanks.

Love to watch the Osprey we have at the Port of San Diego. They love to hang onto the lines of marine vessels and look into the water for their food.
Thank you,,,Always love it
Amazing video!
I swear I can hear Browning machine guns and plane propellers.
"Finally, a worthy opponent. The battle will be legendary." - Osprey Lung
Those are both 2 top tier birds.
Tier zoo told me that anyway.
The osprey just has an unfair advantage against those fish basically boding them as soon as they spawn.
tier lists are always changing bro. tier zoo is learning new information about animals every day and thus the tier lists he provides are not reliable sources of information. i would love to see an update video about recent new discoveries and their affects on the tier lists mentioned in previous videos.
Tierzoo actually has made some very serious errors (especially when it comes to extinct animals and outdated ideas about some animal groups being “inferior”).
Bk Jeong which errors please tell me

When I was a young man camping at the Oregon coast I had the privilege of seeing a bald eagle steal a fish from a seagull in flight. Seagull didn’t survive the attack and was tossed aside as the eagle flew away with the fish. These where the days before cell phones, Wish i’d had a video camera
@mo
@Michael Srite . I'd say that the Eagle's talons inflicted a deadly injury
Big mo . Nice story dude .
A friend of mine saw a bald eagle go after an osprey carrying a fish. The osprey dropped the fish to get away and the eagle dove and caught the fish out of the air.
How did the seagull not survive the attack? Did it have a free fall? Where do you think was it mortally wounded?
Awesome video!
How cool to be there to film that!
Fantastic footage I have never seen anything like this before 🌹
You really have to hand it to those guys/gals who probably wait hours or days to get footage like that.
this is the kind of action I enjoy watching

Fish hawk vs duck hawk عجيب 👍🏼
I love Ospreys. I live in Miami, Florida where they are prob the most common bird of prey. Since Miami was basically built on marshland there are a ton of canals and artificial lakes, plus biscayne bay and the ocean, so ospreys have it good here. I've had the pleasure of seeing them dive for fish a few times. And I've seen them flying with a fish in their talons many times. If you ever come to south Florida keep an eye out for them around bodies of water. Not hard to find at all.
That's almost a unfair evolution. Air and water mastery
And he gave the food a refreshing dip before dinner 😁
The osprey did not mean to ditch into the water. He's looking directly at the falcon and his wing touches. That was a crash
Amazing video
That was some wild flying osprey
I love watching aerial conflicts between birbs
The dogfight was spectacular. The osprey's wingspan dwarfs the peregrine falcon's..
Dang it I wanted to see him deliver the food jeezzz ssmmhh
Genius bird!
And the fish thought it was being released to the water
I glad that bird can feed his family
I saw the exact same thing while out on the boat in Gloucester harbor two years ago but it was two seagulls flying after an Osprey with a fish
Check out how the Osprey shakes the water out of his feathers in flight. Pretty cool.
That was an adventure and a half... And very unusual that peregrine falcon was playing a role of thief. Usually peregrines are the ones getting robbed.
Fantastic strategy used by papa osprey!
It used it ability wisely against the falcon
dude its like watching a dogfight of fighter jets🤣
That scene looked like , what people are doing with toilet paper in market during this coronavirus epidemic.
Imagine being that fish, one day all you know is water, just minding your own business when you're plucked out of the world you know by some creature moving in ways you can't comprehend, ...and now there's a second one fighting over you lol
this is amazing, since fish is not the common food of the peregrine falcon. He must have been desperately hungry.

Richard East Ah. Been looking for this comment, thought I'd not find it.
What I hate is that, while the footage are great, the producer is _compelled_ to artificially and awkwardly splice and edit these shots (trout "escaping", the falcon's "mate", the unseen chicks, e.g.) to make a bogus narration to make a "story".
spoilsport ; )
Bro, I don’t like what you said. At least it did not make me cry.
