Is there a limit to the number of tomes you can pick up during a game? I have heard, but not confirmed, that you can only have 9. In the custom build that was listed in the video, it seemed to support that (2 T1 + 2 T2 + 2 T3 + 2 T4 + 1 T5). I have also heard, but not confirmed that you can only have 1 T5 tome, which makes sense if you can only have 9 tomes total. I assume that you can take more than 2 T1 tomes, but doing so would prevent you from getting a T5 tome. Anyway, just trying to verify how many tomes can be picked up during a game. Thanks.
You can unlock any number if tomes from T1 to T4, only that you have to have at least 2 tomes unlocked in the tier below. The T5 tomes are mutually exclusive, so you can only have one. 9 is an average number if tomes in a map acvording to devs, it can be more or less, but soober or later the AI tries to trigger winning conditions, and will win the game if you won't. But it probably depends on many things.
what i am wondering (and probably missed in the video) is there a limited how many tomes you can have or can you get all the tomes if you play one session really really really long?
Technically you could unlock 49 out of 54 (because the last 5 are mutually exclusive). However, if I recall correctly, devs said that the average is around 10 or 9, because the AI triggers a winning condition sooner or later (if you don't).
I'd assume per turn like previous games. So if you plan to do more than 1 battle in a single turn you may wanna save some combat casting points for future battles! That also goes for if you get attacked in another player's turn before the turn order resets.

@@KalitaKeiji you can play "wood magic" path, as far as we see you get healing, blight damage, some transformation, summoning and terraforming spells from it. Which seems appropriate.
@@L4sz10 compared to beast, the bonuses are small and the profit of healing before the damag looks doubtful, of course you need to look at what will be there in the end, I saw archers, but it's not clear what they are
One thing i noticed is that tier 3 tomes have spirits summons? Doesnt that take away the uniqueness of leveling up the lesser versions from the tier 1 tomes and transforming them, if you can just recruit the upgraded version a couple books later?
Well remember you have to get to those tomes first and depending on the combinations you go for those lesser spirits might have evolved already, and you don't have to take those tomes with the evolved version and could choose different tomes if you already have the lesser ones.
Probably higher in both mana and casting points too. And late game it might not be reasonable to expect people to be able to evolve lesser spirits once most of the npcs are gone
It's also a matter of resource management, I think. You might choose to summon the lesser versions for less mana, and evolve them over time, so as to save mana for some other spell. Depends on what you need at the moment: do I need a powerful summon now - or will a lesser version be enough for now, with mana left over for something else?
@@canineshark1767 You can also take those tomes but not research them, you only need to research half before being able to get the next tome which means only half of the tome's spells needs to be taken into consideration when picking them, which opens up for a lot of flexibility!
You can research all spells from a tome. They just come before you 3 at a time: - 3 spells to research. You pick one. - Once that research finishes: You get 3 more options to choose from, which will include spells from previous tomes you've unlocked. :)
you can research all spells in a tome, but you always presented 3 random research options at one time from the tomes you have already unlocked (and the culture you have). So you get 3 random options, you research one, then you get 3 random other, you research one etc. Imagine as drawing 3 cards from a deck each time, and when you unlock a new tome, you shuffle those new cards to the deck.
@@L4sz10 Thanks ! I feel better knowing this. I'm in a hurry to see the complete list of spells, I really hope there will be more city enchantments as in AOW3 with the druid being able to put roots on the city walls, it was super cool. Fire / Ice walls too? Well, any spell modifying the landscape is awesome.
54. 9 for each affinities: from tier I-IV 2 tomes on each tier (that's 8 per affinity) , plus one ultimate 5th tier tome for each affinity. That makes 54 total.
54 tomes. Each tier (except T5) got 2 tomes of each affinity, and there's 6 affinity: Order, Chaos, Materium, Nature, Shadow, Astral. So T1, T2, T3 and T4 got 12x tomes each, and T5 is 6x tomes. They've mentioned they'll add more tomes in the DLCs for whatever the DLC theme fits best for.
A bit too condensed/too fast paced for me. Wow... the speech is tiring the shit out of me :D like if there is no pause at all.. But great video nonetheless !

1:27 We see a list of units for production. I am disappointed with the production concept: gold and production time are important factors for choosing a production in a turn-based strategy game. But if I can only build one unit per turn per city, I should always take the highest level, because a higher level beats the low ones. It would be different if the concept from Endless Legend was used, where several units can be built per turn. Three L1s or one L3 is a choice, one L1 or one L3 is not. Why is the game using the concept of Empire (1977) and not a modern concept of Endless Legend (2014)?
@@vicwaberub5297 the speed of unit production is determined by its draft requisite and your production of draft per turn. So e.g. a unit costs 20 draft and you produce 10 draft/turn, it will take 2 turns, 20 draft/turn it would take 1 turn, and 40 draft/turn you can create 2 in one turn. The draft required for a unit may vary.
@@L4sz10 What is "draft"? A ressource? Look on the screen in min 1.27: You see units with 90 and 140 gold costs and both will be build in 1 turn.If draft is a ressource, why I can't see it in the unit menu for better calculation of my production line?
@@vicwaberub5297 "draft" is an abstract resource similar to "production", while the latter is for buildings, draft is for units. You can see it on the mentioned screen, the Zephyr Archer requires 220 Draft, and the city Mountward provides 221 Draft per turn. That is why it is finished in one turn. Should the city generate less draft, the unit creation time would probably seem more differentiated. But the core mechanism of Barbarian culture and Chaos Affinity is generating draft at a higher rate, so they can recruit units pretty quickly.

There are plant/growth based tomes in Nature as well (Tome of Roots, Tome of Fertility, Tome if Cycles).
@@L4sz10 The main bonuses have beasts and buffs
@@KalitaKeiji you can play "wood magic" path, as far as we see you get healing, blight damage, some transformation, summoning and terraforming spells from it. Which seems appropriate.
@@L4sz10 compared to beast, the bonuses are small and the profit of healing before the damag looks doubtful, of course you need to look at what will be there in the end, I saw archers, but it's not clear what they are
i see lots of combinations, but how many tomes i can research, is there a limit?
they said typical playthrough is 9 tomes I believe
@Tyragon good to know as I didn't know til now when the game actually let you pick another tome
I don't get it... So you can never research all spells from a tome? Do you always get 3 random spells?
You can research all spells from a tome. They just come before you 3 at a time:
- 3 spells to research.
@@alpturan7897 Thanks, that's better to put it like this... The person on the video had a train to catch and spoke crazy fast.
I'm scared to ask but what's the total number of the tomes?
54. 9 for each affinities: from tier I-IV 2 tomes on each tier (that's 8 per affinity) , plus one ultimate 5th tier tome for each affinity.
@@L4sz10 thank you
@@prinstyrio0 thank you that a huge number of combinations and consider I got the premium😂
@@thetropican640 Keep in mind that number is before the 4 DLCs trickle in at the (planned) rate of about one per quarter!
"endless combinations" is quite a turn off to say... I miss the RPG elements from Planetfall like unit modules. Not sure this Tome system is as good.
A bit too condensed/too fast paced for me. Wow... the speech is tiring the shit out of me :D like if there is no pause at all..
But great video nonetheless !
I'm watching at 2x speed! I can't imagine slowing the man down, but go ahead and watch at 0.75x speed in the playback settings.
The idea was to give you a really broad overview of the mechanic, touching on every possible thing and if something interests you, you can pause the video and explore it. My rule of thumb when making content - don't waste the viewers time.
@@PotatoMcWhiskey I get it, but your message would be way clearer by pausing from time to time. Otherwise it's just a blob of unponctuated words.
Cheers, take care, and thanks for the video anyway.
PLEASE SLOW DOWN!
Cool, but too fast and too many cuts
He speaks too slowly, could he accelerate a little more, please ?
1:27 We see a list of units for production.
I am disappointed with the production concept: gold and production time are important factors for choosing a production in a turn-based strategy game.
But if I can only build one unit per turn per city, I should always take the highest level, because a higher level beats the low ones.
It would be different if the concept from Endless Legend was used, where several units can be built per turn. Three L1s or one L3 is a choice, one L1 or one L3 is not.
Why is the game using the concept of Empire (1977) and not a modern concept of Endless Legend (2014)?
What are you on about? There's like 6 slots for unit drafting and if you have enough draft you can complete multiple in one turn.
@@Akazury Is this a new feature? I didn't see that in the dev videos. But good to hear.
