Can’t wait to create a skaven-like race! The underground map complements this ideia so well! We best-great race ever, yes-yes! We conquer-take the underworld and annihilate the man-things
I'm very happy that there's an option in the realm creator for "Massive Underground" as I didn't realize the underground was naturally smaller than the overworld. I really like the idea that the underground is just generally smaller now as in AOW3 it was sometimes difficult to conquer the overworld while keeping an eye underground to ensure your cities weren't in danger via a growing threat that may have a huge presence underground. However it was also fun at the same time as having more area just meant more chances of wonders & other tiles being populated with cool/interesting things.
I’m so excited for this game already, I need it today not in two weeks! Loved age of wonder 3 and now I’m over the moon with age of wonders 4!!! Looks great too honestly!!
It would be awesome if there is eventually an expansion or DLC that takes us to the sky. Like Sky Island continents, creatures, resources, factions and NPCs. Then spells that can teleport cities to underground or in the sky. The possibilities are endless!
The system seems to be, of what they learned from age of wonder planetfall. region annexiation instead of hexsphere influence bubble of the older games. same as planetfall, but looks much more refined.
@@Taloon85 Ah. Never played Planetfall. I'm excited though. Seems like there will be more strategic choices to make other than "try to found a city in the middle of as many resources as possible."
@@MetalMonkey1453 And A.I. isn't going to spam cities across the map and made Doomstacks because there are city and hero limit caps and requirements ( in form of tomes and affinities) to produce high tier units.

I think I saw some interesting spoilers - Portrait of Yaka (Wizard king from AoE 2 leading fire Tigrans) and some story mode objectives. I wonder if there are some missions for villains as well e. g. WONDERful (see what I did? Lol) job on the game capture for this video. Absolutely stoked for this one, took work off for release day to do nothing but play this all day!

I sure hope it won't be like HoMaM 5 because that was a huge fucking disappointment compared to it's predecessors. Luckily, what I've seen so far suggests that this game will live up to it's own predecessors quite well.
@@Leyrann HoMM 5, especially with Tribes of the East, is as good a game as it's predecessors, with many improvments like alternative unit upgrades, and decoupling Initiative/Speed from the rigid Round system. Compared to HoMM 3, many units have unique abilities or access to active spells. It also doesn't have the problem of Dimension Door/Town Portal cheese making games an absolute slog, where a single army can defend all towns at the same time, Diplomacy being a total cheese, or having most of magic school be useless. Haven't played Age of Wonders since the second game and I skipped over 3. I haven't seen a city with a wizard tower in this one, was that feature entirely removed?
for the ancient wonders you can just explore them to see what you are fighting against before even entering the fight itself and if you are not strong enough to handle it you can just leave it there is no must battle when exploring
So seeing as naval travel is an affinity ability, could the underground be considered a solid substitute for traversing seas? Obviously it's gonna be limited to a handful of places but still.
Travel ability is 'neutral affinity' which can be unlockable in the very early stage of the game as long as you have enough 'imperium' resource. As for the underground, there is one racial perk that allow you to build cities underground which is cool.
Anyone can unlock naval transportation, as that's located in the neutral affinity tree. But to answer your question, yes, in some maps you might find underground paths that will connect you to other continents, so you could use that instead of sea travel! Depends on the map, though, so you could get unlucky.
So how many regions can a city claim? In Planetfall it was 5 in total along with the main colony hub (7 after Invasion DLC came and presented players with a new type of sector).
Every pop the city gets increases the domain. I think the limit would be more like how far it can spread from the city, and how much food it can produce, as I don't think there are any hard limit on pops.
That’s right you don’t need settlers/colonisers/pioneers … instead I’m pretty sure it’s your commando and heroes who can now (as far as I know ordinary units without a hero/commander can’t do it by themselves but I could be wrong)
You need 'Imperium' resource and a hero to do it. Furthermore, you have a limit cap of how many cities and heroes you can have. These limits are needed because A. I. or Pro players could snowball the whole map with cities and Doomstacks armies.
The game looks great, but am I the only one who doesn't like the map being dovided otno those small regions and would prefer each hex to just be individual, with cities haveing a regularly shaped sphere of influence?
I agree with you Ty, but it's grown on me a bit. I do like that the sectors seem to be smaller than in planetfall. I might prefer them to be a bit smaller though, like 1/2 to 1/3 the size.
Yeah, I prefer that too. My guess why they didn't go back to hexes is that it's probably easier to balance map design with sectors, or something similar.
I'm still not sure how I feel about the Strategic map being broken up into these... weird wobbly chunks. It just kinda looks ugly as sin. One thing I always liked about Age of Wonders was the fact it was so neatly laid out in the Hex-grid, but still managed to look pretty and relatively natural. These big inconsistant blobs of territory all jigsawed together just kinda doesn't look very good to me.
Not a good sign when diplomacy is relegated to the midnight infomercial hour slot. Lack of proper diplomacy options was an issue in AoW3 and did not improve one iota in Planetfall. It looks like AoW4 will largely recycle the previous iterations again.
The old games had even more barebones diplomacy. This isn't a grand strategy game. It's a 4X about conquering as much as possible as quickly as possible. There's not much to "fix" about it.
@@danielsgamerprofile4067 Yes I did and the options were so basic I lost hope.
