This is without a doubt the best bass demo I have ever heard. So many tones it’s crazy. And I don’t think you even actually turned a tone knob just the push pull and the pickup selector and then where you played on the bass. So awesome.
Great tone and demo of all the sounds you can get out of a Rick! Always thought that they were a "super" jazz bass with the hotter pickups and distinctive silhouette!
What is your neck relief and action set to with the strings on the Ric? I don't hear any fret rattles/buzzing. Even with these low tension strings. Nice!
I don't have specifics unfortunately, but the neck was pretty straight and the action was low. I ordered it from Chicago Music Exchange and asked them to set it up with these flatwounds. Maybe they have some more information on how they set up their Rics!
HaHa, Got the same Ric 4003S bass and LaBella low tension strings on it. Don't they sound and feel great? I might switch out the neck pickup to a Gemini Wave Rider. You're getting some great Chris Squire tones on that Ric.
Hello, I have a 4003 bass and I am kind of annoyed with the gap between the treble pickup ring and the pickguard. I see that you don't have this gap. Have you replaced you pickguard to get the more oldschool look?
Hey! Yeah I was bothered by that too! I replaced the pickguard with a "4003 Vintage Conversion Pickguard" from Pickguardian. The knobs are Vintage knobs, also from Pickguardian. Just to let you know, the guy in charge of Pickguardian does prefer that you send him your pickguard as a reference to get it to fit properly. Hope this helps!
I put a set of rotosound 77 montel flatwounds as someone suggested to me and at first I hated them because they are unlike any flat wound I have ever used but after putting the time to break them in and get used to them they have become my favorite all around string. They give that punchy mids and treble like a roundwound but add some great deep bass. If you haven't tried them give them a shot.
The flats in the video are definitely supposed to be super mellow. I've used D'Addario chromes before and they're much brighter than the La Bella low tension. I've heard some other flats used on Rics that sound extremely bright, hopefully you get what you're after!
EB Cobalts and Group Flats are definitely bright like rounds. Chromes are second place. These LaBellas sound like Phil Lesh tone. Enough articulation on top but lotsa body. The Ernies are super bright but tinny, less body.
@@lungimsam if you are looking for the roundwound sound go with rotosound 77 montel flatwounds. Gives the deep flatwound sound with the punchy mids and highs.
Isn't She Lovely, it's an arrangement that's loosely based off of the Victor Wooten version I think, found it on RUclips by a guy who coincidentally used a Ric himself haha

Thanks! And I hear you, flats are not for everyone, especially these low tension one. They were really fun and nice for doing Beatles-y type stuff. However, I really loved stainless steel rounds on it too... instant classic Ric tone!
I also have flats on my 2017 4003 and you have demonstrated exactly what they are capable of. Absolutely amazing and in love with this bass.

@@paulsimmons5726 Nice!! Thanks for watching!
Great playing! It's definitely a warm retro sound with the flats on.
I hope you
At last someone who plays the neck pick up and gets some bass out of it.
Thanks! I adjusted the pickup height on both to try and balance the levels between the two pickups.

Yes songs on flat wounds, still sounds great.
Nice 1612 in there, pretty cool to see Vulf played on a Rick!
Great tone. Very unique.

Long Distance Runaround was so good
Given its flats, I'm surprised it sounds good too despite the original being played on rounds!
