I use my Rick for everything. I play in a number of bands, and get calls to sub in as well. All genres. Anyone who says they are a one trick pony doesn't know what they are talking about. If you just use your volume and tone knobs, you can do anything. In all the gigging I do, no one has ever asked me to use a different bass. Nice chops. Cheers.
I have a 'fetish' for Rickenbacker basses. But too expensive for me. However, the versatility demonstrated made me pursue the dream. Now, I have a Walnut 4003 :-D
I'm 17 and worked my ass off during last summer to buy one of these things. Saved up the whole 3 months and got mine in Matte Black with binding and shark tooth inlays, now I just need the ric o sound box
@@carpediemarts705 It splits the pickups so one cord of a cable has the bridge pickup and the other one the neck pickup. You can now use different amps and cabs for each one, like ex. bridge has a 2x10 with a Gallien -Krueget amp, the neck a 1x15 with an Aguiar amp. Theoretically you have 2 bass sounds coming from one bass. You can also have different effects for each one. Not that I've done that yet, but that's in theory what can happen. The 4003S does not have stereo capabilities, but I'm not 100% sure.
@@RobertKekuna I first did ghetto biamp by plugging my marshall instrument in into my hartke 2500 effects out. Hartke has equalizer after effects loop and after tube "emulation". Hartke gets the 15" equalized low and Marshall got the 2 10" equalized high. Then I traded the HA2500 for a HA5000 with a real tube and real crossover. Theoretically I don't need the Marshall, but I'm not going to tell my girlfriend that. When the transistor Marshall preamp is getting signal from the Hartke's 12ax7 it sounds especially yummy. So yes, I understand biamping. I just had to ask if having the signals from the 2 pickups sent separately instead of mixxed at the guitar's output jack really made a difference. If so, why for the last 50 years hasn't every other manufacturer had stereo outputs and with the exception of Sheehan, why doesn't everyone mod their 4 or 6 string outputs to stereo? People biamped because you couldn't expect a wide enough frequency response from one speaker. Both heads and cabinets color the tone, so having 2 heads and 2 cabinets allows a lot more coloring options. Modern speaker technology allows small subs to handle the very low hertz, and high wattage with a massive excursion. Therefore biamping is no longer the "necessity" it once was. It's an expansion of coloring palette with large boxes instead of software plugins and post processing. Pardon the book. Yeah, is stereo really worth it to you?
The clouds finally parted for me earlier this year. Money in bank lined up with a 4003 Rick available and I pulled the trigger. Came to me unplayable. Hornet buzz on the D string and pickup so damn high breathing on the strings bounced them off the bridge magnets. Yeah, just needs a good setup and I have not given up on it... but to say it was disappointing would be an understatement. It sits under my bed untouched to this day. I will eventually spend more money on it to make it playable. Eventually. I have enough nice basses it is not a priority. I DO love the Rick tone, vids like these make me go "oh YEAH, I have one of those..... I should get it in to the shop!" so, thank you for the push.
People think the Rick is a one trick pony, only good for a Squire-like grungy and clanky treble tone. But play with the tone and volume knobs, play with one pickup or the other or both, turn the vintage sounding capacitor off or on, and you can get a VARIETY of tones, from 1960s Jamerson to modern Flea.
I’ve got a ‘ Clicky Ricky’ and I love it!! There’s no other bass that sounds like it. And it’s gorgeous, a work of art. Rickenbacker.... what a cool sounding name too.
I played borrowed Ricks for years doing classic rock, funk, R&B, jazz, metal, anything I could use them on. Thanks for showing these really will do anything.
Great bass playing, love your work. I have a Rick 4003 and use both pick and fingerstyle. I love the range in tones you can get changing the combination of pickups, vintage tone mode and tone controls. Huge versatility without changing anything on the amp.
Great job. I love rickenbacker basses. I'm happy that more young people are continuing the legacy of chris squires picking style and doing other things as well
Richárd Holló It doesn't sound that bad, indeed. I think the rick + slap =shit is more a cliché than anything else. This bass deserves every penny spent on it! Now they are putting back the old less expensive 4003s back in production... Could be even greater value for money if you're not fancy stereo output!
Road House I have never used basses with stereo outputs, so no, I'm not into those things.:D And yeah, there could be something in this cliché thing, actually when it comes to slap, nobody ever mentiones a Rick instead of a Fender or anything. But it still sounds great.
one of the best Ric demo videos I’ve seen. thank you for doing such a great job of demo’ing all the different tones/sounds with the various techniques and controls of the instrument. Nice playing as well! 👍
Nice one. As someone who sold his 78 Wine Red 4001 many years ago I can truly say worst decision ever. Got to me a Ric again. Excellent video. Nice to see someone showing its versatility.
I have a '78 4001 bass that I love and been meaning to buy one of the newer 4003 basses to use for live gigs and leave the old one at home and use it for recording purposes mostly. Excellent demo. You play very well.
Ayy man great review! I couldnt find reviews of players playing with a pick! I prefer 10000 times the sound of this bass and most basses with a pick!!! Thank you!
I meant it sincerely. There are many, many great bass players on YT. Certainly better than myself (I've always just mainly a rock / heavy rock player). But they seem to play mainly one style. I'm sure some of these are faster than you are, but I doubt if most can masterfully play as many styles as you can. I'll bet money that you've done some studio work....how many years have you been playing?
NO problem, I appreciate you're playing & responses. Rics have a sound all their own. You know it's a Ric when you hear it. A little different than a MM or J bass with the treble cranked. I LOVE the necks. Nice & thin, without the taper that you see with Fenders. Still, the only rock bands who've used them are fairly rare: Yes, Rush, Motorhead, Deep Purple (w Glover), etc. Fender & MM pretty much are the work horses of rock basses. Yet their sound is kind of limited, kind of like a Gibby EB3. Do you uses other basses when you really want the low end, such as a P bass? Or are you strictly a Ric Man?
Great demo of a great instrument - I have the same model and colour - you struggled a bit to slap it, as I do - not really made for that - but I;m a finger style, but you reminded me to get the plec out just now!
As soon as I heard you start playing I thought... "Sounds like it's going through a sansamp". Checked the description and yup. Nice playing and the clip sounds good but I think a big part of this sound is the coloring from the sansamp almost to a point where we're not even hearing the true character of the Ric.
I use the sansamp with the blend at 12 o'clock, so half the signal is purely unprocessed. I don't like the massive use of the sansamp, the sound gets too clicky and there is a lost of fundamentals. At least for the use that most people make of it. But trust me, I've got 10 basses and I am very keen on making them sound the way they're supposed to, I do not abuse the sansamp

+Alberto Alcolumbre actually no, the lack of countour is only on the top side, so it has very little impact on the playability. On the other hand, you can get a 4003s that is countured on the front as well! Thanks!
I've met a few people who've said that in the local guitar shop. Say a ric should only be played with a pick, tone wide open. And then I play something like this guy. They usually shut up.
The lack of bass frequencies when happens is due to a number of factors; style of playing, amp, settings, speaker and all circumstances.
